WIBU to keep my son off school for this?

So I had a hairdresser appointment this morning for 9.30. I desperately needed a cut and colour before going on holiday next week.

Unfortunately my dd was sick at 7.30am...although she seemed fine afterwards. This meant I had to keep her off school.
Given that the chances of getting another appointment in time for the hols was zero, was I bu to call in a sicky for my eldest son (14) this morning to watch her while I kept the appointment I had? Fridays are a half day at school anyway here.

My hair is looking great now but I don't know if I did the right thing.
What would you have done?

It's half a day near the end of term. I bet he was just aching to be sat in front of some awful dvd at school for the morning.

It was a one off. Hope your hair looks great.

Fantoosh · 26/06/2015 15:12

That's what i was thinking youthecat thanks.

Biscuit
YouTheCat · 26/06/2015 15:14

And I hope you're going to share all these biscuits. Grin

Fantoosh · 26/06/2015 15:14

Why the biscuit? You might not agree with me, but there's no need for biscuits.

It's not a great option to model that school is optional for your son - good luck with that when he does his GCSEs Grin

I'd have taken the 7 year old with me as you said she was fine.

PenelopePitstops · 26/06/2015 15:15

Fuck me, you are ridiculously un reasonable!

How self centred are you?! You don't have one kid to care for the other.

TheHumblePotato · 26/06/2015 15:17

I think you missed a trick OP, if you'd planned in advance you could have kept him of this week so that you could do some last minute shopping for any holiday essentials.

Fantoosh · 26/06/2015 15:18

I suppose it was quite self centred of me, but take it from me, the hair was very rootsy and looking dead scruffy.

What was a girl to do with an impending holiday coming up? Would any of you be happy to go on holiday looking like crap just to preserve one morning of school?

This is a fun thread!Grin

startwig1982 · 26/06/2015 15:26

Well I need a haircut so maybe I should get my DH to take the morning off school(he's a teacher) at look after the dc while I go to the hairdressers. I sure the head would be ok with that.

Number3cometome · 26/06/2015 15:27

Take an extra half day next week and get your bits waxed. No one will mind.

Fantoosh · 26/06/2015 15:27

I don't think that's quite the same is it Startwig? My son isn't a teacher.

OP posts:
Mairyhinge · 26/06/2015 15:29

Why do people do this? " was I unreasonable to do xyz?"
Ffs who gives a shit? You've done it, you obviously thought at the time it was an ok thing to do, so why in the name of all things holy are you asking now if it's unreasonable?
Personally I'd have tried to find a different alternative, but if you were that stuck what the hell.

Everyone more or less will be jumping up and down with indignant rage at this and they would NEVER do anything so detrimental to their child's education, but meh, whatever. Horses for courses.

YouTheCat · 26/06/2015 15:30

Well I think you've done us all a great service. Why should the general public have to look at your unkempt mop?

Plus you're helping local business.

A selfless act, imo. Grin

Sparklingbrook · 26/06/2015 15:30

A hairdo v education AIBU thread. Well I never.

HoldYerWhist · 26/06/2015 15:32

Why did you post this? You've already done it, what difference does it make now?!

Fantoosh · 26/06/2015 15:33

Thank you Mairy. It was a total "chuck it in the fuck it bucket" moment.

I suppose I just wondered if anyone else had ever done anything similar. I'm beginning to regret asking now.

I hate roots and I don't have a huge amount of concern over missed schooling but even I am taken aback to be honest.

LashesandLipstick · 26/06/2015 15:35

Oh for gods sake. Exams are over, they're doing nothing at school now, a morning off will not impact his education and ruin his prospects.

LashesandLipstick · 26/06/2015 15:36

YouTheCat, agree

Finola1step · 26/06/2015 15:38

Quick question, who are you going in holiday with next week?

runs in, asks question about possible term time holiday, runs away

Fantoosh · 26/06/2015 15:38

He's (nearly) 14 so hasn't been doing exams. Those are a way off yet.

OP posts:
Sparklingbrook · 26/06/2015 15:38

I can honestly say I have never done anything similar to making my DS miss school so I could get a haircut because I was worried about looking unglamorous on holiday.

Is it a holiday in term time?
