WIBU to keep my son off school for this?

So I had a hairdresser appointment this morning for 9.30. I desperately needed a cut and colour before going on holiday next week.

Unfortunately my dd was sick at 7.30am...although she seemed fine afterwards. This meant I had to keep her off school.
Given that the chances of getting another appointment in time for the hols was zero, was I bu to call in a sicky for my eldest son (14) this morning to watch her while I kept the appointment I had? Fridays are a half day at school anyway here.

My hair is looking great now but I don't know if I did the right thing.
What would you have done?

I am usually fine with holidays , trips out, family events in term time ( not that I do them simply I understand why people do) This one I would have an issue with as a parent sometimes our wants /needs come second..You had a child at home who vomited ..you had no idea if she was going to be fine or not and it is your job to look after her..

Pipbin · 26/06/2015 18:05

Sorry, I missed the op being in Scotland.

Purplepixiedust · 26/06/2015 18:08

Of course you were being unreasonable. I thought you were having a laugh to be honest.

Two main reasons - you should not expect your 14 yo to look after your sick little one and it gives the impression to your son that a haircut is more important than his education.

The morning off school in its self, less of an issue.

Fantoosh · 26/06/2015 18:13

Starlight I know, but I've known dd a long time...all of her life in fact, and I felt pretty confident in making that call. It went exactly as I expected...she was fine.

Where are people getting the idea that all teaching stops after the last half term?

No it doesn't .But in the last week it does at least! They're are winding down and chilling out a bit as the holidays are coming.

EeyoresTail · 26/06/2015 18:16

He brought his xbox UP to the living room OP? Where does he keep it? In the dungeon? Wink

merrymouse · 26/06/2015 18:27

I highly doubt that one half day of DVDs/games etc is going to make a crucial difference to the OPs DSs education.

No, but the op is casually taking advantage of other people because she couldn't get herself organised to get her hair cut until the last minute.

Plenty of people do worse, but the op wasnt being a rebel or amusingly scatterbrained, she was just being a user.

Yanbu. He has to pull his weight

Gileswithachainsaw · 26/06/2015 18:30

ofgs the chikd had just as much chance of being ill in two weeks time. The appointment wouldn't have been a problem no matter how last minute as it was in school time.

seriously

Even now in fact, it is well-nigh impossible to get anything remotely high-quality out of children. They're tired, hot and fractious, and before anyone suggests that other countries have hot weather too, our schools, in the main, aren't designed to cope.

ilovesooty · 26/06/2015 18:31

When I was teaching we had to have end of term dvds approved by management as curriculum related and we were told that teaching should take place as normal right to the last afternoon of term. Management used to do drop ins to ensure that happened.
I don't think that's the issue though.

Oh I like this thread.

It has my favourite things, a good hair colour, and pearl clutching

It's like my user name was made for this thread.

cashewnutty · 26/06/2015 18:36

I would do this OP. Nothing comes between me and a cut & colour.

I quite often beg DD not to go to school because i cba getting up and driving her there. She ALWAYS makes me get up. What is with children today and their positive attitude towards education? Wink

Gileswithachainsaw · 26/06/2015 18:36

And who hasn't ever called up on the off chance somewhere has an appointment free.

If you know your free Mon - Fri 9-3 then does it matter how last minute it is??? no one knows when their kids gonna be sick

merrymouse · 26/06/2015 18:37

Apparently the reason that the appointment couldn't be missed was because it was booked just before a holiday and the OP had left it until she thought it was urgent. The solution is to book an earlier appointment or get a less high maintenance hairstyle.

She WAS organised. But her dd was sick and threw a spanner in the works.

But obviously on here not to everyone's liking Hmm

Oops! C and p'd twice. Sorry! Don't know how that happened Blush

Gileswithachainsaw · 26/06/2015 18:40

or perhaps merry no one should ever book anything just in case Hmm

if the hair dresser bills regardless then doesn't matter how urgent it was or wasn't. cos your 50 quid down regardless.

It was ONE time. Ffs

merrymouse · 26/06/2015 18:40

no one knows when their kids gonna be sick

Which is why you assume they might be and don't rely on your 14 year old son for babysitting. It really isn't that difficult to organise your life so that you don't need 'urgent' last minute haircuts. Just go grey if life is so unmanageable with coloured hair.

Gileswithachainsaw · 26/06/2015 18:42

So basically you really are saying never arrange anything ever in case your kid is sick.

ghostyslovesheep · 26/06/2015 18:42

blimey Merrymouse you are a determined little thing Grin

Gileswithachainsaw · 26/06/2015 18:42

And a 14 yr old is more than capable of baby sitting ffs

Fantoosh · 26/06/2015 18:43

I feel I must clarify something here - when I say pillar-box red, it's really more of a vibrant raspberry red. It's really nice but a total bitch to maintain and looks shit growing out...like reds do.

Gileswithachainsaw · 26/06/2015 18:44

perhaps op should never have a drs appointment herself either. You know cos that precious 14 yr old shouldnt have to watch his sister.
