Virtually everyone has said they cry at the end of this kids book but I bought it to read with the wee one this evening and...nothing. I wasn't quite sure what bit I was supposed to find emotional other than the poor wee bugger who's got sniffles and coughs Hmm

Am I just a cold hearted bitch or is there something I'm missing?

Oh man I have the Peepo gene for sure.
My DS recently destroyed my very own copy from the actual 80s, and I could have throttled him Grin

We are big fans of Mog here, having never read them before - I'm leaving Goodbye Mog until it becomes a useful tool I suppose...

coffeetasteslikeshit · 26/06/2015 13:23

Puff the Magic Dragon always gets me, when he grows up and stops visiting Puff.

merrymouse · 26/06/2015 13:58

Definitely Peepo.

Also the Alfie and Annie Rose storybook:

"because she’s my little sister, and I’m her big brother, and we’ll go on being that forever . . . even until we’re grown up"

weeblueberry · 26/06/2015 14:02

Seems I have lots of stories to add to my list in an attempt to get blubby at bedtime Wink

And thank you for writing out the words to The Night You Were Born! It is really lovely and I think I'll pick it up for DD1 Smile

Oh on the night you were born definitely! I bought that for DDs 1st birthday and sobbed when I read it!

I don't get the Peepo thing though I must admit? in fact I've just got it out of DDs book box and read it again but no, not getting it!

greensnail · 26/06/2015 14:14

The House at Pooh corner gets me every time, at the end when Christopher Robin is going off to school I was sobbing. Also, dd2 kept bringing one home from school called Grandpa and towards the end Grandpa isn't very well then the last page is a picture of Grandpa's empty chair. Dd2 just looked at me with a bemused expression while I sobbed my heart out.

MsRyanGosling · 26/06/2015 14:29

This isn't the best thread to be reading with a 4 day old DD Sad

Bloody sobbing away.

Hello Amazon Goodbye SMP Grin

HRHLiz · 26/06/2015 14:36

Oh my, On the Night You Were Born might spawn a fair few narcissistic children to deal with on the school trip to the zoo...

diggerdigsdogs · 26/06/2015 14:48

The night you were born lyrics

Peepo makes me weep as does 10 little fingers.

I love reading to my babies. Dd1 is 4 now and has had a massive growth spurt. Where has the time gone :(

lurkingaround · 26/06/2015 15:12

Oh fgs I'm teary just reading the bloody titles. I am hopeless. I was a sap before I had kids now I cry at every flipping thing. It is a torture. (Kids aren't that small any more either and I'm still a cry baby). Having said that I am missing the 'Peepo' gene!!

But I think my worst one is The Little Match Girl fairytale. I am a mess after it. Such a sad story.

Eliza22 · 26/06/2015 15:25

The Velveteen Rabbit....poor wee thing.

Doodlebug300 · 26/06/2015 15:38

Many of the above, but my two big weepy ones are:

'Wherever You Are My Love Will Find You' (SOB)

And, 'Someday'.

Oh and 'Bog Baby' still makes me very, very wobbly.

Doodlebug300 · 26/06/2015 15:38

Oh and I nearly forgot 'The Invisible String' (sob sob!)

Loula117 · 26/06/2015 15:40

'Baby Brains' is one that always got me - when he's up in Space and gets lonely, and then when he lands Mrs Brains comes running. And they 'lay him down in the brand new cot. Our very own Baby Brains'. Aside from that it's quite a funny story about a baby who qualifies as a surgeon and astronaut whilst still in nappies (result of parents who play classical music to the bump, and read him The Times in utero)

Yes to Dogger as well, the bit which goes 'and then Bella did a very kind thing'. And 'Owl Babies' when Mummy Owl finally flies back. Oh and Thomas the Tank engine stories, but they were tears of boredom.

MostlyColouringIn · 26/06/2015 15:47

Oooh Dogger! Just like the story, my brothers are called Dave and Joe. Dave was badly bullied at school and I always felt that I had to look after him. The first time I read it to my dd I cried so much she said 'mummy you're ruining the story'!!!!!!

FraggleHair · 26/06/2015 15:48

I love that the little boy in Dogger is called Dave! Where are all the little Daves?

Doodlebug300 · 26/06/2015 15:57

I felt quite worried for Baby Brains. How was he supposed to cope with being a baby and needing his mummy and yet having such supreme intelligence and abilities? I don't think he's going to grow up to be very emotionally balanced.

reallywittyname · 26/06/2015 16:37

Yes, I am also a bit worried about Baby Brains. The first night he is home from hospital his mum just ambles down the stairs for some breakfast, why isn't she sleep deprived and panicking because he isn't there right next to her? Why does it take for him to go into space for his parents to realise he belongs at home with them?

doodledee · 26/06/2015 16:42

'Someday' by Alison McGhee, simple, poignant with beautiful illustrations, a must for anyone with a daughter. Makes a lovely present for new mum of a little girl.

Dancergirl · 26/06/2015 16:59

The one that gets me I can't remember the title of! Does anyone know?

Picture book, few lines of rhyming text on each page, about 2 bears called 'Big' and 'Small'. It's basically about unconditional love and how Big still loves Small even when he's cross and grumpy.

Also - 'Mole and the Baby Bird' - lovely story about friendship

Dancergirl · 26/06/2015 17:00

Just found it upthread - 'No Matter What'

impulsiveboy · 26/06/2015 17:23

Owl Babies.

lurkingaround · 26/06/2015 17:45

Oh yes, The Velveteen Rabbit!! And poor old horse with all his fur loved off, and poor rabbit! It's one darn thing after another.
