Eating a sausage at toddler class?!

Girl33 · 24/06/2015 14:43

I took my son today to a mum and toddler yoga class. All the kids were playing and snacking so my son got peckish. He chose a sausage from his lunchbox and the teacher informed me that meat wasn't allowed in the studio. I was so upset and I couldn't just take it off my son so we left.
Now im home I just feel really shocked and angry. I'm vegetarian but my son isn't, he's only little. Don't really want to go back there now.
Who had ever heard of this before???

I really don't understand why you were so upset?
Their session, their rules.
You could have taken the sausage off him and given him somethingelse, it wasn't a big deal. Think you threw a bit of a strop.

kali110 · 24/06/2015 16:14

Elder- what about adults?

elderflowerlemonade · 24/06/2015 16:15

Yes, it's good for both! Helps you chill!

chaiselounger · 24/06/2015 16:16

I seem to be opposite to all the others, I can't believe they told you no sausages allowed.

If all the others are snacking, then other than nuts, why should anyone stipulate what you are/aren't allowed to eat.

I am surprised.

KoalaDownUnder · 24/06/2015 16:17

YABU.

Why didn't you just nip outside until he finished the thing?!

Yoga is not just a 'sport' of some kind, there are a lot of spiritual/quasi-religious undertones. It doesn't surprise me at all that someone who has a space dedicated to the practise of yoga would want it to be vegetarian.

I am really baffled that you're so upset. Confused

pinkyredrose · 24/06/2015 16:19

mijas you sound reasonableHmm

GobblersKnob · 24/06/2015 16:19

YANBU - being vegetarian is a personal decision not something to impose on others. I don't care if it is due to religion or not

Nice Hmm I think respecting the religious beliefs of others when you are in their space is pretty important actually, no need to take them home with you.

chaiselounger · 24/06/2015 16:19

I hate being told what to do when there is no justifiable reason. Sometimes I think people get a bit power crazy and I wonder 'who do you actually think you are'?

Next they'll be telling you what yoga pants to wear, what drinking vessel you are allowed!

Gobblersknob - they went to do baby yoga, not to prey!

If the instructor was reasonable they could have explained that maybe next time the OP could refrain from bringing meat products because of religion or whatever. That would have been fine. But the instructor was not reasonable and would rather make a toddler cry by giving them something and then taking it immediately off them

Child hating religious authoritarian nutcase

MitzyLeFrouf · 24/06/2015 16:46

Sounds like he was preying on that sausage!

ouryve · 24/06/2015 16:49

How long was the class that he needed to snack halfway through?

Denimwithdenim00 · 24/06/2015 16:53

Fair enough twinkle personally I would rather rip my arm off and eat the soggy bit than take one of my toddlers to yoga but each to their own.

Can't see why she decreed that a sausage is bad though.

Community buildings are for the whole community arnt they? If you only eat halal or kosha that's fine, personal choice but don't dictate what others eat.

She sounds a petty little hitler type.

Might have sausage and mash for tea now.

TerryTheGreenHorse · 24/06/2015 16:53

Maybe they are concerned that other veggie children will eat it by mistake if there is a high concentration of veggies on there.

A sausage is a perfectly viable snack in my book mind.

TwinkieTwinkle · 24/06/2015 16:54

Child hating religious authoritarian nutcase

Yeah, I don't think the yoga instructor is the nutcase...

TwinkieTwinkle · 24/06/2015 16:58

Bloody hell, instructor asks for child not to eat a sausage. OP is 'shocked' and 'upset' and two members are calling the instructor a 'nutcase' and 'little hitler'. Mad.

editthis · 24/06/2015 17:03

So many nutters on here today!

WinterOfOurDiscountTents15 · 24/06/2015 17:08

So upset, shocked and angry? Hmm You clearly need a lot more yoga. Way to over-react. Hardly a huge shock that a serious yoga studio would be vegetarian, and sausages are not exactly an everyday snack to carry around for young children.

TheFillyjonk · 24/06/2015 17:13

Looking forward to seeing Sausagegate, complete with mum and toddler sadface, in the Daily Mail. Wink

I think this was just a case of when in Rome, do what the Romans do. The yoga studio is a designated meat free space, you brought out meat and were told it was banned. Surely it's nothing to get upset about? And if you were upset, your reaction would have impacted on your toddler. Better to just go with it - y'know, yoga is a spiritual and calming influence that can teach you those things!

derxa · 24/06/2015 17:17

Only on Mumsnet!

Ionone · 24/06/2015 17:18

The instructor should have made it clear (if people bring snacks) what was and wasn't allowed in advance.

SillyStuffBiting · 24/06/2015 17:21

This constant snacking never ceases to amaze me. I run a group for p parents and toddlers from 10-11.30. It's made clear the actual activity is in the first hour and the rest of the time is for us to have a cuppa and a bleather and if the kids need a snack to give it then.

It's a nightmare in some groups, it's like an all you can eat buffet for some parents who come armed with an array of Tupperware containers crammed with fruit and vegetables and bags of baby crisps and raisins. The amount of time I spend scraping fucking raisins of the floor!

I politely request snacks are kept until the end and I've been met with all harrumphs and sighs you can imagine, like I've asked them to sacrifice their first born. It's a fucking hour, little Johnny won't disintegrate in that time if he isn't fed.

MitzyLeFrouf · 24/06/2015 17:21

The studio should have be clearer in terms of signage but who loses their shit over a cocktail sausage?

CrystalCove · 24/06/2015 17:23

Shocked and angry??? Ok....if meat isnt allowed in the studio why are you shocked and angry?
