DH and I have had a long standing disagreement regarding the DC using the word fart - I won't allow it and he has pointed out to the DC's that it is not a 'bad word but just one that I don't like them using.

AIBU? or is he?

Ahh, but who knows why we call them farts?

From Wikipedia.....

"Roland the Farter (known in contemporary records as Roland le Fartere, Roulandus le Fartere or Roland le Petour) was a medieval flatulist who lived in 12th century England. He held Hemingstone manor in Suffolk and 30 acres (120,000 m2) of land in return for his services as a jester for King Henry II. Each year he was obliged to perform "Unum saltum et siffletum et unum bumbulum" (one jump, one whistle, and one fart) for the King's court at Christmas."

DP and I dissolve into fits of giggles when we see "abfahrt" in Switzerland. So immature.

Mominatrix · 22/06/2015 18:39

I find it quite bizarre to use euphemisms for bodily functions and parts. We use fart (rarely used as it really does not come up in discussions very often!), penis, vulva, anus - it is what they are!

SunnyBaudelaire · 22/06/2015 18:42

ha ha luis, abfahrt and ausfahrt, and best of all 'Daddy' is 'Vati' (V pron like F)

GoblinLittleOwl · 22/06/2015 18:46

Anybody using the word 'fart' is vulgar, yet the local library displays a book with the word in the title proudly in the dyslexia section. This is to encourage reluctant readers. Cheap.

selly24 · 22/06/2015 18:47

I hate the word fart used by/ around children????. I encourage 'toot'

TheyGotTheMustardOut · 22/06/2015 18:49

YABU and prissy.

Mehitabel6 · 22/06/2015 18:54

Of course it encourages reluctant readers! Children love the vulgar and subversive. They just need to know that what is appropriate among friends in the playground isn't appropriate in some other situations.

Charley50 · 22/06/2015 18:58

Luis, there's a town in Switzerland called Wankdorf! That always gives me a chuckle!

Topseyt · 22/06/2015 19:00

Abfahrt is German for Departure. You will see it up all around airports, train stations etc. in German speaking areas.

A journey by car, coach, train, plane (anything but walking) is a Fahrt.

Father is Vater, which is pronounced very much like Farter. I remember delighting in telling my Dad that he was my Farter just after I began learning German at secondary school. He was the slightly prudish sort who didn't like to let us say fart or bum when we were growing up, but now I could do it legitimately as part of my education, so I did. Grin

There was also the legendary French Petomane, who entertained large audiences with his farting skills:

Petomane

There is a video clip on YouTube I think of Leonard Rossiter playing the part of him.

Mehitabel6 · 22/06/2015 19:01

I have just done a search on Amazon children's books. I put in the word 'fart' and 408 results came up. It is what amuses children.

Topseyt · 22/06/2015 19:06

Penis is Willy in this house. Never been too sure why they get called willies so often.

Toilet humour is clearly alive and well.

I too remember the thread where a teacher had been pulled up by Ofsted for allowing the use of the word fart when she didn't even consider it a swear word (as so many of us don't, but prudish Ofsted did).

Has OP been back recently? Probably didn't expect the thread to explode in the way it did!

SunnyBaudelaire · 22/06/2015 19:07

surely abfahrt would be arrival and ausfahrt departure?

fascinating wiki entry - read for yourselves!
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fart

Muskey · 22/06/2015 19:07

I think it's a funny word.

StarlingMurmuration · 22/06/2015 19:09

We call them farts ( or botty-burps or farty-pants to 7mo DS, i.e., "Are you doing farty-pants or poopy-pants?" when he lets rip). There was a thread a while back about farting and someone said that she would feel violated if her DH deliberately farted in front of her, so now we sometimes just say "I'm afraid I've just violated you" if it's a particularly smelly one.

SenecaFalls · 22/06/2015 19:09

My mother is a very prim and proper Southern US woman, and although she eventually gave up trying to get us not to say fart, she always said "poot" on the rare occasions she needed to refer to this particular act.

She had a rule "no discussion of pooting or politics at the Thanksgiving table." We still try to follow it.

ocelot41 · 22/06/2015 19:16

Fart is fine, draw the line at swearing

dougierose · 22/06/2015 19:17

I find people who say Pump, Pooomp, trump, etc are rather vulgar.

I'm nicely middle class and it's definitely fart in this house.

MitzyLeFrouf · 22/06/2015 19:18

I'm still laughing at the poster's granny who thinks body is a vulgar word.

MegMurry · 22/06/2015 19:20

We have always used fart in this house.

I have a 55 year old colleague who says 'blow off'. Now that is ridiculous - as are all of the prissy alternatives.

RosesareSublime · 22/06/2015 19:27

Op I am with you and hate the word, but sadly they all use it Sad.

AnnieOnAMapleLeaf · 22/06/2015 19:29

Well we must be lower than lower class. Our family rejoices in farts - DH in particular. He chases DD and DS around the house bum bottom ass first to squeals of laughter.

Jo4040 · 22/06/2015 19:38

Depends what it sounds n smella like I guess...fart,trump,pump,
