to wonder what benefits will get the chop from the £12 billion of cuts?

Just that really. I'm wondering which benefits are going to go or be significantly cut. Anyone have any idea?

Am not sure what benefits they can cut for the wealthy. I know everyone defines wealthy by varying levels of income, but in general the wealthy receive no benefits. Other than wealthy pensioners, obv.

I don't know the answer. I can see where they could trim a little, but nowhere near the amount they want.

FWIW, I think condemning all the English as 'take from the poor to give to the rich' is a bit off. Certainly doesn't reflect people I know. I, like many, loathe the Tories and have never voted for them. However, as a country we live above our means. This needs to change or our kids will be stuffed.

BathtimeFunkster · 21/06/2015 19:09

However, as a country we live above our means.

When you say that, what do you mean?

It seems weird to accept that basic Tory lie and then not vote for them.

The rich get loads of public money, they just aren't called "benefits".

steiner8 · 21/06/2015 19:12

I wonder if the point of cutting tax credits and housing benefits is to discourage Eastern Europeans from coming to the UK? If they can't limit benefits to them then they can do it buy cutting these benefits to everyone, so it would affect them as well?

BathTime is right. It's not about reducing our debt, its about simply not believing in a welfare state.

It takes just a small twist of fate for the comfortably well off to become uncomfortably poor. Or if you need an ambulance, a fire engine, a bus, some extra help for your child you may find austerity is closer than you think.

Well obviously women and children. Why do you have to ask.
I mean who else

manicinsomniac · 21/06/2015 19:19

maternity benefits - yes, rationally aimed at women but can't men have them instead/as well now? I actually think that's another thing I'd choose to cut if I had to choose something (I think maternity benefits are a good thing! Just not necessary in the way that benefits for the poor and disabled are, especially if they go through with this increasing free childcare thing or could find some way of making employers pay maternity themselves)

steiner - Eastern Europeans can't claim any benefits at all. Can they? I didn't think they could. Not until they've been here quite some time.

expatinscotland · 21/06/2015 19:20

'I wonder if the point of cutting tax credits and housing benefits is to discourage Eastern Europeans from coming to the UK? '

No, it's about punishing the poor for being poor, the idea that if you beat them enough they will magically become unpoor.

expatinscotland · 21/06/2015 19:21

'Eastern Europeans can't claim any benefits at all. Can they? I didn't think they could. Not until they've been here quite some time.'

Yes, they can, as soon as they are here if they are in any sort of employment. EU nationals can claim child benefit and CTC and WTC (based on having children) on children who are not resident in this country.

BeautifulLiar · 21/06/2015 19:21

I'm really worried about this. It's not bloody fair. It's not as if lone parents get much money anyway.

If ex didn't pay a fair amount of maintenance I'd be pretty buggered.

Northernlurker · 21/06/2015 19:22

I wonder about the special rules for DLA paid to the terminally ill. Could be cut to be paid to those with life expectancy of 3 months and less rather than 6 and also subject to reassessment after however many months. Justified on the basis of the 'excellent' medical treatment and improvements to quality of life now available blah blah. Cue for DM stories about how Sharon Sponger (47) has been claiming under special rules for 11 months WITHOUT DYING. Burn Her! You might think even the Tories wouldn't go after the terminally ill. You'll be wrong.

CremeEggThief · 21/06/2015 19:25

I am really worried about this. I only get sporadic work as a supply teacher and when not working, all I have to live on is child tax credits, child benefit, and child maintenance.

Northernlurker · 21/06/2015 19:25

Basically I'd watch out for anything not means tested - unless paid to pensioners. So Widowed Parents Allowance, Bereavement Allowance, Bereavement Payments.......

wankerchief · 21/06/2015 19:25

This!!

I dread the next round. Scary times.

BathtimeFunkster · 21/06/2015 19:28

I don't agree with David Cameron often, but I'm with him that this situation is outrageous.

That our public money is being given for children who don't live here is a scandal, and needs to end.

howtorebuild · 21/06/2015 19:28

My guess is child tax credit, child benefit and there will be a reduction in the current year for non income related ESA/JSA claimants with lots of savings, maybe a reduction to six months, then they have to start using up their savings.

BathtimeFunkster · 21/06/2015 19:30

And child poverty is on the way up again.

Slow hand clap for everyone who voted Tory.

Dawndonnaagain · 21/06/2015 19:33

Slow hand clap for everyone who voted Tory.
The don't give a fuck, that's why they voted Tory.

needmorespace · 21/06/2015 19:39

Bathtime and Dawn
Yes - very slow handclap indeed.
But be careful, they are sensitive souls. Remember the screams of how abusive those that didn't vote Tory were and how they were simply scaremongering after the GE.

howtorebuild · 21/06/2015 19:40

They are proud they voted Tory. They work harder than poor people too.

It wasn't an accident of birth giving them chances others didn't get, no it's because poor people or disable people deserve it. AngryHmm

Thancred · 21/06/2015 19:42

One of my siblings voted Tory and received CHB, CTC, and WTC. The first time I hear any whinging about cuts to them I'm going to do a slow hand clap.

Sandpipernest · 21/06/2015 19:45

And here it comes - the abuse which means anyone with an opposing view won't be bothered to argue.

Tory voters actually tend to give a fuck about the vast, vast majority of ordinary people in the UK. They are belive that a Govt shoudl govern for the majority the best it can.

Labour thought differently which is why they were so soundly trounced. But hey, carry on thinking the tory voters are evil shits if it helps you sleep at night. No skin off my nose.

GiddyOnZackHunt · 21/06/2015 19:52

So sandpiper rather than getting upset about words on a screen, tell us which benefits you think will be cut and the rationale behind that. Not being snide, I'm just curious what you think will be cut and how that will affect people.

FanFuckingTastic · 21/06/2015 19:52

Pretty worried about my situation. I'm dependent on PIP (both enhanced rates) and ESA Support Group. Also housing benefit.

I manage okay-ish right now. Sometimes I am a bit skint, but others I have a bit to spend on nice things, like going to the cinema or out for a meal.

I would have to seriously budget if I lose any income, I'd probably have to go to social services again and hopefully get some support with things that I currently use the money to get around independently.
