To be really irritated when someone insists that the Bra Guru method of measuring is wrong?

On another forum a lady is insisting on adding inches to her band measurement and advises others to do so.

She measures 33 and wears a 36. Says that a 32 or 34 cuts into her but this this must be because she's wearing too small a cup if she's adding inches to her band measurement.

Head desk.

Ues, when I was nust dping my measurement under boob, I had a dilemma of measuring with my lungs full or flat. Over an inche's difference there. In the pics that wide bit under my bra band is pure hard ribcage.

ToysRLuv · 21/06/2015 18:42

Oh god.. hope you can make that out!

Albadross · 21/06/2015 18:42

God by that blogspot link you have to actually bend over braless to measure?! Does the foot of extra skin count as boob??

LashesandLipstick · 21/06/2015 18:44

Toys do both and if there's not much difference use the larger one.

Albadross it's to make sure migrated tissue gets measured

StatisticallyChallenged · 21/06/2015 18:45

Grin albadross. It gets you closer then measuring standing up does, but the cup is always a rougher measurement which is why there's all the info about recognising when the cup fits. I'd normally start with the measurement size and work down through the cups if your breasts are quite soft. Some people also have breasts which is almost rugby ball shaped which can make them measure bigger than they are. COnversely people with tall breasts can measure smaller - it really is a start point only.

keeptothewhiteline · 21/06/2015 18:46

It's all crap. Does it even matter? As long as you are comfortable and feel good does it count?
Heap of shite IMO.

CrohnicallyAspie · 21/06/2015 18:47

statistically I'm sorry if I offended you by my comment- the intention was to have a bit of a laugh at myself since I know I can have very black and white thinking (hence why I just can't get my head around this bra sizing thing!). I know you weren't having a dig at me, I thought you might possibly have been lightheartedly teasing so I tried to reply in the same vein. I do know you're aspie too (we've been in contact via pm under one of my old names).

ToysRLuv · 21/06/2015 18:48

treaclesoda, I don't like anything too tight or small. Makes people, look like stuffed sausage meat if not stick thin or very toned. I measure a size 14-16, and wear that size. For comfort would like to wear 16-18, but a tent makes almost anyone over the size of 10-12 look ginormous or pregnant.

CrohnicallyAspie · 21/06/2015 18:48

treacle that's a good question, my favourite top at the moment is a men's size L hoody- I'm really around a women's size 10.

treaclesoda · 21/06/2015 18:48

But so many women say they aren't comfortable. Why is it a heap of shite to offer some advice that might help them find something more comfortable? If they're comfortable as they are then great, but why dismiss something that so many people have found helpful?

StatisticallyChallenged · 21/06/2015 18:48

The problem is that for many women, wearing a bra which is too big on the band causes significant pain. If you have larger breasts then the weight ends up hanging off your shoulders causing you to hunch forward. So no, getting a well fitting bra is not a heap of shite.

If you are comfortable, have no pain issues and are happy with your bra then crack on with what you are wearing.

LashesandLipstick · 21/06/2015 18:52

Also a lot of women say they are happy with their bras - but how many can't wait to take them off at the end of the day, hate under wires, think bras are difficult?

If you've only known bad fitting ones you don't always know how uncomfortable it is

StatisticallyChallenged · 21/06/2015 18:52

Sorry Crohnically, think a few of us are feeling a little got at on this thread - possibly not helped by being called "tossers" upthread! In all seriousness (and no offence meant), your asperger's may be a factor here - not liking the feel of clothing against the skin, anything constricting etc is really common for us Aspie women! I'm super sensitive to ill fitting bras, and especially to tights - can't stand it if they dig in. I live in dresses because waist bands on trousers and skirts tend to end up annoying me. One piece of clothing is far better!

LashesandLipstick · 21/06/2015 18:54

Statistically - slightly off topic but that's really interesting. I have sensory problems and have been told as well as my ADHD I'm probably "mildly on the spectrum". I can't stand jeans. Ever. The texture against my legs feels like sandpaper. Never made the connection before Shock

ToysRLuv · 21/06/2015 18:56

I know that it's easy with small boobs, as could technically go without a bra pretty comfortably. I think that the difference is that with squishy torsos and big boobs you get more chance for error and more pain following the wrong choice. Less room for movement on small sizes and firm, bonier torsos, smaller stakes in comfort, and the only likely pain is involved with a bra too small. Same way of measuring doesn't work for both, but I suppose you have to start somewhere.

LadyNym · 21/06/2015 18:57

I've been getting more and more pissed off reading this thread. So, this is one of the bras I was fitted with in M&S on Monday. It's not the right fucking size at all, is it??

goodasitgets · 21/06/2015 18:59

See I like my boobs shoved up :D
My most recent purchase (front and back) I think this is a 32K

LashesandLipstick · 21/06/2015 19:00

Toys you're right in that larger coins often need more support. I get pain if I wear a larger backsize, whereas someone with smaller boobs probably wouldn't. Small boobs can still benefit from a supportive bra though!

Nym, no it isn't. On the first pic you have breast tissue escaping, and the last one the band is riding up your back

LashesandLipstick · 21/06/2015 19:02

Goodas, you look lovely! Smile

StatisticallyChallenged · 21/06/2015 19:03

The difficulty is that many people think they are in the small boobed group because M&S (or similar) have measured them loosely, then added 5" and so they're miles off their "real" size. The number of times we'd had someone who measures say 30" underbust and 38" overbust but thinks they have small breasts because M&S had them in a 36B...it makes it very hard to say "smaller boobs don't need as much support" because until you get a starting measurement, how do you define "small" IYSWIM? So we say "start here", work out the band, see what feels supportive but comfortable, then work out the cup etc. The advice that those who are more slender might need to add inches is given all the time and we do have it on the blog too IIRC.

Jeans are my nemesis Lashes. I want to love them but how does everyone think they are comfortable?! Buttons, seams between the legs that dig when you sit, inflexible waistbands that are fine when you stand up but either dig on or gape when you sit down...no no no no no!

goodasitgets · 21/06/2015 19:04

Thanks Smile it's a flirtelle padded one via brastop and I'm really pleased with it. V comfy and no armpit digging

StatisticallyChallenged · 21/06/2015 19:06

Sorry LadyNym but no, it's not the right size and I'd say not the right shape either. The band is riding up quite badly so the cups aren't being held up properly (which will be part of the reason it's gaping) and you might also need something which is not as tall at the outside edges as it looks like your breasts might be more bottom heavy. But- that could just be because the cups are collapsing forward. Oh, and the bump at the outside edge under your arm should be in the cup but it won't stay there cos the band is too big.

ToysRLuv · 21/06/2015 19:06

Oh, and to whoever asked (was it Lashes), my bra band does not move anywhere during the day. Willing to try a 34 D, again, though. Give it a second chance. Will look next time I am in m&s.

Albadross · 21/06/2015 19:08

John Lewis were pretty good for me. I'm wearing 30F but probably need to move down to a 28 soon. I have no actual boob left - it's literally just empty skin :/

LashesandLipstick · 21/06/2015 19:09

Statistically that's a very good point about people thinking they're "small boobed" because of adding 5 inches!

I feel the same! I hardly ever wear trousers because dresses and skirts are so much nicer to wear. I don't know how anyone wears them. I don't like that horrible shiny material either it feels so gross. Never realised how much my sensory weirdness dictates my clothes before
