To be really irritated when someone insists that the Bra Guru method of measuring is wrong?

On another forum a lady is insisting on adding inches to her band measurement and advises others to do so.

She measures 33 and wears a 36. Says that a 32 or 34 cuts into her but this this must be because she's wearing too small a cup if she's adding inches to her band measurement.

Head desk.

now i just wear crop top bras in size 12!

Shouldof · 20/06/2015 22:41

I'm nearly 40 and only just realised I've been doing it all wrong. At least it took me from an A cup to a C cup (bee stings here)

Dowser · 20/06/2015 22:44

I've worn 38dd for ages but only measure 34 around the band.

Someone suggested I try a 34E I think . I forget now . I'm 41 round the full bit.

I was measured a few years ago at Camille and cane out with a 38 Dd

It all seems like a lottery to me.

DrElizabethPlimpton · 20/06/2015 22:50

I haven't ever been fitted for a bra and have spent £££'s on all different sizes and still can't get it right and none of them are comfortable.
Where is best to go for a fitting ?

LashesandLipstick · 20/06/2015 22:50

Dowser try 34F

Most high street shops are shockingly bad at measuring

treaclesoda · 20/06/2015 22:57

I think what frustrates me more is when people measure, then ignore the differing cup size, and then insist that the measuring method is wrong. Eg 'Well, I'm a 36C in M&S but the bra guru method said I was a 32 band. But I don't believe I could ever be a DD, that's huge, so I just tried a 32C but I couldn't breathe. Therefore the bra guru method is rubbish'

It's like your feet measuring a size 8 but then trying on size 6 shoes and complaining that they don't fit. Confused

Fizzielove · 20/06/2015 22:59

I had no sooner had my breast reduction and bravissimo opened a shop in town! Great! Though I can't tell you how much better it is going from a ii cup to a D!! Grin

SurlyCue · 20/06/2015 23:01

treacle am i right in thinking there is a bravissimo in victoria square?

BatteryPoweredHen · 20/06/2015 23:02

The problem is different bra manufacturers use different systems.

Some require you to add the inches to get to the right size, some do not.

If you are using the 'new' way while the manufacturer of the bra you are buying uses the 'original' way, then of course there will be problems!

treaclesoda · 20/06/2015 23:03

Surly there is one in Royal Ave, opposite Debenhams. Smile

SurlyCue · 20/06/2015 23:04

Thanks treacle!

LashesandLipstick · 20/06/2015 23:05

Battery hardly anywhere uses the old system, I can only think of one brand of luxury undies that do

treaclesoda · 20/06/2015 23:07

Battery it's not really a 'new' system though. My mother is in her 80s and has always measured in the 'bra guru' way. I'm 40 and since my first bra over 25 years ago I've always been measured the 'bra guru' way. M&S measure me as a 36 but if I was wearing one of their bras I would still need a 32. although in reality I wouldn't wear M&S anyway as they are such a terrible shape

cunchofbunts · 20/06/2015 23:07

It makes me irate as it's a public health concern. Ill fitting bras can cause backache and all sorts of other problems.

Marks also don't do a G cup. They go from F directly to G, so their G cup is in fact a FF. Ugh.

I'm the opposite, I'm a small size 10 and every time I've been for a new bra recently I've been given a 30d/32d and they just DO NOT fit.

I'm really bored of having the same conversation every time a buy a new bra - are you sure you want a 34c? 34c fits perfectly - and I'm a small 10.

treaclesoda · 20/06/2015 23:12

If you look at the Bravissimo catalogue, the likes of Freya might offer one style of bra in over 50 different sizes. Go to M&S and you'd be lucky to get one bra in 15 sizes. So M&S try to shoehorn all shapes and sizes into their limited stock.

cunchofbunts · 20/06/2015 23:14

Karoleann, I'm a size 12/14 and am a 32 band so am puzzled how you're a 34.

This link shows two women with D cup and two with G cup - helpful to see the difference a back size makes
I'm a 16 and wear a 32/34

PonderousTortoise · 20/06/2015 23:18

Another supposed 30D/DD here for whom the hallowed method doesn't work. Yes, I've done it properly, yes I've read all about shallow boobs and skinny ribs. No there are no bras in the recommended sizes that fit. I wear soft bralet things now (after some expensive trial and error) as that is the only thing that fits/is comfortable.

Great if it works for you, but I fail to see why it would irritate you if it doesn't work for someone else.

BabyGanoush · 20/06/2015 23:23

I measure 31 under bust, but don't like wearing anything tighter than a 34. I hate my bra to be tight.

I can fit a 32 but it's bloody well cutting into me.

So I think the MN hyped new way of measuring is either bollox, OR I am a bra freak for not liking a tight fitting bra.Grin

cunchofbunts · 20/06/2015 23:24

It annoys me as Marks say I'm a 36C when I'm a 32FF.

I despair of ever finding a bra that bits me. M&S have always measured me at a 38B or C. These were a bit loose in the band but basically OK. The Bra Guru method puts me at a 32E so a massive difference. I went into a bra shop once and tried on about 20 bras in my new size as well as surrounding sizes. Found several that ticked all the boxes for a well fitting bra. Gave me a great shape too. Took tyem home and they were so uncomfortable after wearing all day. I seriously considered taking one off in the loos at work once because I just couldn't bear it. So now I wear those elastic crop top thingies. They don't give the greatest shape but I can wear them all day and they are comfy.

BabyGanoush · 20/06/2015 23:24

Oh, and am size 12 (if that's relevant)

LashesandLipstick · 20/06/2015 23:26

Ganoush have you tried the 32 in a larger cupsize?
