To be really irritated when someone insists that the Bra Guru method of measuring is wrong?

On another forum a lady is insisting on adding inches to her band measurement and advises others to do so.

She measures 33 and wears a 36. Says that a 32 or 34 cuts into her but this this must be because she's wearing too small a cup if she's adding inches to her band measurement.

I always hated jeans as a child, but now I love my jeans! Now that I know what styles p/fabrics suit me, I buy a couple of pairs at a time and wear them on rotation till they literally fall apart. Maybe you guys just haven't found the right size and style that suits you! Start by measuring your hips, standing and lying down, then try on a pair in that European size. Measure your height and choose petite, short, standard or long. If you find they gape then try a different cut. Post some pictures on here and we'll advise you what size to try next.

Disclaimer: I may have made that up about the measurements. And the pictures.

But seriously, my mistake was wearing waisted jeans, then I tried ones that are supposed to sit on the hips and never looked back. Slight stretch material and petite sizing (I'm 5'3") help them fit without seams digging in. They probably do gape at the back when I bend over, but quite frankly I couldn't care less so long as they feel right!

GatoradeMeBitch · 21/06/2015 19:16

Question - what if (thanks breastfeeding...) you have emptyish boobs and they hang almost in points when you bend over to measure them? Would that reading be accurate? I can't do it right now, no tape measure. But last time I did it, the cups of the bras I tried on felt much too roomy.

ToysRLuv · 21/06/2015 19:19

I guess, what I mean is that there is less chance of someone wrongly thinking they are small boobed if they have a bony, firm upper body than if they have a less defined and squishier upper body.

LashesandLipstick · 21/06/2015 19:19

Gatorade you'd have to measure leaning over but definitely try them on before you buy as that can affect fit

keeptothewhiteline · 21/06/2015 19:20

CrohnicallyAspie
How lovely - having jeans as a child. My mother did not allow me to wear jeans at all - I had to save from my Saturday job as a 16 yo to buy my 1st pear.

ToysRLuv · 21/06/2015 19:22

On the jeans topic, I suit high waisted ones better (low set jeans fall down on me and give me a muffin top), although most still gape a bit at the back (pear shaped)..

CrohnicallyAspie · 21/06/2015 19:28

keep they were my older brothers hand me downs! probably explains why I found them so uncomfortable...

MadameJulienBaptiste · 21/06/2015 19:48

The bra interventionists have changed my whole shape and I am far more confident in more fitted clothes now.
I went from a 38b to a 34e although it took a few tries to find freya fit my sideways bobs the best
I effing love my torpedoes after decades of poached egg type shapes squashed flat and pushed even more sideways by cups far shallower and wider than I needed.
The closest thing to tossers for me was my m&s 38b bras. Tossed straight in the fucking bin.

Jen1610 · 21/06/2015 20:28

Iv no measuring tape but I know I'm 32 round the back. I got measured as a 36d. So to work out the guru measuring way. Since I've been wearing a band four inches too big. If I drop down to a 32 would I add on four cups from a d? So 32g? Does that make sense or have I totally made that up?

To be fair. My bands not tight and my straps do repeatedly fall down and need to be tightened as tight as they can to prevent it.

bigkidsdidit · 21/06/2015 20:34

Huh. I said above I tried it but couldn't wear the bra guru size because it was too uncomfortable. Then I saw a post about flared ribs fm rom pregnancy. I think mine are, I had two big babies and lots of water = massive bumps! I'm back to my old weight but none of my old dresses fit becaus they won't do up over my rib cage (fit fine on waist).

I had never heard of flame ribs before. Will they return to normal? What should I do with bra sizing to make it more comfy?

LashesandLipstick · 21/06/2015 20:51

Jen I'd try a 32FF. If you're having to tighten the straps to stop them falling down that means the band is too big. Used to happen to me all the time!

LashesandLipstick · 21/06/2015 20:52

Big, probably means you might need to go up a band size. So if you measure a 30D a 32C might fit better.

Idefix · 21/06/2015 21:06

Ok, late to the party but hope that is ok. Would love some advice. Just back from the UK where nice m & s lady did the measure thing and said I was a 34 c after first being told I was a 34b flesh spilled out everywhere I tried one on that seemed ok but they did not have the colours I wanted. Phoned ahead to the next store on route to Calais and picked reserved bra. It did not fit Shock felt very grr about it as wasted a lot of time to do this.
I did not ask m & s lad what I measured and have just done the bending over technique. I am measuring 31.5 under and 37 over. Breast bottom heavy and empty up top from years of bf. My ribs are very bony at the front but fatty at the back.

Where do I start?

Idefix · 21/06/2015 21:07

Dover not Calais feeling jaded...

LashesandLipstick · 21/06/2015 21:12

Idefix I would try 32DD and 32E

Pictures of 32E for comparison

That is a useful link, thank you. So if I have shallow breasts and wide set breasts I should avoid, or not, push up type bras? That's all they seem to make :( I actually like the enhanced look, I don't mind the "boobs enter the room before me" thing, it's a bit of a novelty, but DH isn't keen because he thinks it looks unnatural. I'd be interested to try a style which doesn't rely on padding to push me up and instead supports what I actually have, but I'm a bit paranoid that (as happens without a bra) my ribs or stomach will stick out further than my breasts do and look bizarre/make me look pregnant (which I definitely DON'T want.)

Idefix · 21/06/2015 21:19

Thanks Lash going to take a look and plan a trip to my local shops. Yesterday's experience certainly cured me of my m & s nostalgia Grin

My breasts are also very wide apart Bertie

LashesandLipstick · 21/06/2015 21:20

Bertie if you like the look go for it! Otherwise, I'd recommend a half cup style for shallow breasts. I'm not the best to give recommendations as I have the opposite shape (narrow projected) but I THINK figleaves make some unpadded bras in the just peachy range that are good for shallow breasts

LashesandLipstick · 21/06/2015 21:21

Hope you find something Idefix :)!

BertieBotts · 21/06/2015 21:21

Sorry was referring to the link about breast shape.

The gallery is also good but has made me feel a bit depressed about my fried egg boobs Grin :(

BertieBotts · 21/06/2015 21:23

I'm in Germany, so I tend to scour TK Maxx - unusual sizes seem to show up there! I did find some good things in a department store the other day and bought one which is a push up, again, but fits me more smoothly than anything else has! I'm not keen to put a photo up on this public forum, though. We need a secret MN bra intervention facebook group :)

LashesandLipstick · 21/06/2015 21:23

Bertie don't feel bad about them small boobs are lovely!

This site might help, lots of lovely bras in C and below cups. They can run firm in the band so if you want to order one you might size up or order an extender online!

www.thelittlebracompany.com

LashesandLipstick · 21/06/2015 21:26

The little bra company bras are also specifically designed for smaller boobs rather than a lot of normal bras that are designed for average boobs, and scaled up and down quite badly. So they often work for shallow breasts :)

LapsedTwentysomething · 21/06/2015 21:28

This is embarrassing but I'm going to jump right in on a bra thread and ask. I went to a lingerie shop a few weeks ago. I had a voucher that needed using - I've put it off for ages because I don't have the willpower to lose weight. In fact, I keep gaining.

I spent ages in there and tried everything the proprietor suggested, but they were all hideous. She said I was either a 38F or a 40E and there really wasn't a lot of choice. In the end she had to order something in and even then it's something I'd expect my gran to wear Blush it's also pretty uncomfortable- not what I was expecting from a professionally fitted, £75 bra. I'm size 16-18, so big but not outsize. Whenever I see these threads I feel that maybe I'm wearing the wrong size.

BertieBotts · 21/06/2015 21:30

They have a Dutch stockist. I'm always taken aback by how easily I can read Dutch due to the similarities to English and German Grin
