To be really irritated when someone insists that the Bra Guru method of measuring is wrong?

On another forum a lady is insisting on adding inches to her band measurement and advises others to do so.

She measures 33 and wears a 36. Says that a 32 or 34 cuts into her but this this must be because she's wearing too small a cup if she's adding inches to her band measurement.

Head desk.

Aspie you've confused me! The bras are now made and labelled to match the underbust measurement, so 36 means it should fit someone with a 36" underbust. However bodies are weird and sometimes certain people may feel more comfortable sizing up/down. I dunno if that's what you meant?

keeptothewhiteline · 21/06/2015 18:21

LashesandLipstick - I don't agree at all.

Do you work for a bra fitting company?
I have found some amazing bras from Next- ( self fitted of course) Fit beautifully. No overspill, snug, wonderful uplift, very comfortable.

LashesandLipstick · 21/06/2015 18:21

Aspie but no one says it gives an exact size. It gives a starting size. That doesn't make it wrong

TedAndLola · 21/06/2015 18:22

Tedandlola, are your breasts quite bottom heavy? And have you scooped?

Yes they are bottom-heavy. I have scooped but there was only a very little outside of the cup to begin with, probably from where I've been wearing B/C cups for years.

Ted could be the style of the bra. You may need shallower cups. if it's non wired then as statistically said it's not gonna contain your breast tissue in the wY a wired one would

It is wired, it's similar to the one in the picture. I feel really thick but what are shallower cups? Is that like a balcony bra where the cup doesn't extend as high? That's what I need, I think, I'm not filling the part nearest the armpit.

Toys it looks like the bra is not doing much besides just covering, kind of just lays there? Nothing wrong with it if this is what you want - I want mine to lift the boobs a bit higher though than they would naturally be.

StatisticallyChallenged · 21/06/2015 18:24

Basically Chronically, nobody is 100% sure WTF has gone on with bra sizing, why we used to add inches and why they no longer work properly if you do (in most cases). If you go to a good professional fitter, then the size they put you in will, in general, correspond to not adding inches. . The don't add inches method kind of sprung from that i.e. finding a way of measuring which matches, as closely as possible, the results of a proper bra fitting. It's never going to be as good though as a fitter who has a shop full of stock to try on, which is why there is lots of additional guidance about how to recognise a good fit.

LashesandLipstick · 21/06/2015 18:24

Keep no I don't, but I've researched this way more than I should and fit several women online and in person. Been doing so since I was 16 (see my sad bra story a few pages back!)

The reason you have no overspill is because the breast tissue is in the band. Unless you do have measurements that are roughly 34 under and 39 over? If so then you are right and the bravissimo woman was wrong

CrohnicallyAspie · 21/06/2015 18:25

cunch at the start said adding any inches at all is wrong. She is BU.

statistically was that 'slavishly' aimed at me? Maybe 'autistically' would be more accurate!

lashes if a 36 is made to fit a 36 then why would manufacturers say to add inches?? It's usually the manufacturers/shops that say that isn't it?

LashesandLipstick · 21/06/2015 18:26

Ted don't feel thick! It's not very well known thanks to shops stuffing everyone into a shit sizing range

This explains about shallow breasts and bras with shallow cups, scroll down to the bit about it

keeptothewhiteline · 21/06/2015 18:27

lashes- why your interest?
band. Unless you do have measurements that are roughly 34 under and 39 over? what does that mean?

fairgame · 21/06/2015 18:27

I've come out as a 30dd using the intervention method. I've also been fitted as 30dd at Debenhams and bravissimo but I still struggle to find a good fitting bra. I think a lot of it is to do with boob shape. I've never had a problem with the band but cups seem to be hit and miss, Gossard seems to fit suit me the best. Everybody's boobs are different and I don't think any one method will work for everyone, its a frustrating case of trial and error to find the right brands and shapes that fit. It really shouldn't be this complicated though!

LashesandLipstick · 21/06/2015 18:28

Aspie because it makes most people fit 32-38 A-DD and means they don't have to bother making a big size tange

ToysRLuv · 21/06/2015 18:29

Statistically, the contortions were partly causing the slight gaping. Sitting down now they are flat. Willing to accept that the shape of the cups is not perhaps perfectly ideal, but I do love this bra and the cup shape is what it is.

Lashes, do you mean a balcony style? I have never found one without oadding in just cottony fabric. They are always "sexy" lace and plastic satin.

StatisticallyChallenged · 21/06/2015 18:30

Crohnically no, it wasn't aimed at anyone in particular more at the general tone of some of the posts on the thread which go "I tried one in my band measurement and it didn't feel comfy so it's all shit" which is not the point of bra intervention. I would not be having a dig at you being an Aspie since I am one too. Quite hurt by the insinuation tbh.

Many of the manufacturers aren't saying add inches anymore. If you go to Leia for example, which is owned by Freya, they don't add inches. But many retailers are way behind the times, and there are also some funny issues between international manufacturers and such like.

LashesandLipstick · 21/06/2015 18:31

Keep because at 14 I was wearing a badly fitted 32FF and hated that all bras in my size were ugly, that my shoulders got marks from straps, that my boobs always popped out. I got fitted in a 28GG/H at 16 and wow suddenly I could feel comfortable and my boobs looked nice

Under your bust should measure around 34" and over your bust should measure 39" to be a 34DD. It's not exact, you could be 33 and 38 and still fit that, but if you're 30 and 40 then something is off

StatisticallyChallenged · 21/06/2015 18:32

That's fair enough ToysRLuv, it's hard to take a good picture of your own bra! If the same bra is still available it might be worth trying the 34D in it though, you might find it works better. Cottony fabric is ridiculously hard to come by though, I responded to another poster upthread who prefers cotton and it is shocking how few natural materials there are available in bras.

TedAndLola · 21/06/2015 18:33

Lashes according to that I have pear-shaped breasts, so I'll look for some t-shirt bras and moulded-cups. Thank you for all your help!

LashesandLipstick · 21/06/2015 18:34

Toys on this link scroll down to shallow breasts it explains about the bras that will fit better

keeptothewhiteline · 21/06/2015 18:34

But women are very different.
I have very supple joints, when I get out of breath ( for example exercising) my rib cage expands massively. I

LashesandLipstick · 21/06/2015 18:34

Ted no problem! I hope you find a good bra

ToysRLuv · 21/06/2015 18:35

I think if my boobs are hoiked any higher than they are now, they would look a bit unnatural and "trussed up" IMO (maybe should include full body pics to show how high they already are proportionally). They are meant to be at the height they are and my bra keept them there and prevents too much jiggling, which is the goal.. I don't know, though.

LashesandLipstick · 21/06/2015 18:36

Keep, that's a valid point, some women do have ribs that expand a lot. And that does affect fit, so that could be occurring

Doobigetta · 21/06/2015 18:36

Well, I changed from a 34A to a 30DD a couple of years ago after learning on S&B how to measure properly, and I've never looked back. I cannot believe that I felt shit about my tiny boobs for so many years, when it was all the fault of bras in completely the wrong size.

LashesandLipstick · 21/06/2015 18:37

Doob exactly :) that's why i get so annoyed with bad fitters they make people feel their bodies are "wrong" when it's their shitty bra

treaclesoda · 21/06/2015 18:38

Can I ask a question? A lot of women are saying 'I don't want a bra to be tight against my ribs', and it got me thinking, do you feel the same about clothes in general? Eg, would you be the type of person to wear your clothes a couple of sizes bigger than you actually measure too? Eg I can't bear wearing a top that feels tight around the underarm, so I never ever wear blouses/shirts or anything that is fitted in this area.
