to not be into this modern obsession with smelling of chemicals rather than like a human

I personally find it normal to have a human smell about you after a hot (28 degrees) working day.

I find the smell of peoples aftershave, perfume and cigarettes quite offensive. Really irrigates my nose and throat.

I seam to be in the minority, I use natural deoderants but after 12 hours I do smell like a human. I've been the one spoken to about my hygiene rather than the smokers or the heavy perfume wearers. I wash every morning, dry skin brush to remove dead skin and use a chemical free deodorant. But I do smell like a human at the end of the day, not like aritical chemicals. I seam to be on the outside in this modern world.

Depends how 'human' we are talking OP. A faint whiff of BO is preferable to being drowned in perfume in my opinion.

However people generally avoid embarrassing personal hygiene discussions unless the person they need to talk to smells RANK.... like 3 week old sweat and stale piss level of rank.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 20/06/2015 10:54

But those are not the only two options, eyebags - how about no smell of BO because they've used a decent anti perspirant like Mitchum, and either no perfume or a faint scent?

MrsV2012 · 20/06/2015 11:47

YABVU and inconsiderate towards the people you work with.
My OH uses deodorant, not anti-perspirant, and he doesn't smell unpleasant at all he smells gorgeous. Sweat doesn't smell, decomposing bacteria on on your skin does. If you keep washed, bathed and properly cleansed, you shouldn't smell.
At work, if someone had a faint whiff about them every now and again, you'd let it go. For a colleague to actually speak to you about it, you must really smell bad consistently.
It is your choice to not want to 'smell of chemicals', but your colleagues also have the right to work without smelling the decomposing bacteria in someone's armpits!
I think you need a better skin cleaner to be honest Smile

OP has chucked their stink bomb and buggered off.

alltoomuchrightnow · 20/06/2015 17:02

People can't always smell their own. Last week DP forgot to use deodorant after a shower. It was the worst I'd ever smelt him. It was a trail of BO everywhere he went in the house and completely overwhelming. And I'm not a fussy person, I don't request he showers daily etc. I had to open every window and door. He couldn't smell it! thankfully he reshowered then applied deodorant. The next day there was a bad smell in the bathroom. Coming directly from nail scissors. the smell was so obvious, I just knew he'd been trimming his pit hair. (no sign of any cut off hair). I asked him if he had and yes, that was the case. The smell was that strong the scissors still honk even after wiping them. And he didn't believe me, only took my word for it. I run a charity shop and right now, the changing room stinks of BO. Please folks, there is no excuse for it.

LadyMaryofDownton · 20/06/2015 18:52

You stink there's no excuse for that! If someone has had to pull you aside and speak to you about your "human smell" then you need face facts & wash/change your clothes daily & use proper deodorant & perfume.

If you don't act on this feedback, you might end up getting fired, OP. That's the important thing, not whether MN agrees with you about chemicals.

sweetgrape · 20/06/2015 19:10

There are some lovely smelling deodorants out there. It's not necessary to squirt half a can at a time on you, just enough to make you smell fresh, obviously on a clean body though. Why would you want to smell nasty?

UptheChimney · 20/06/2015 19:36

Like others on this thread, I gag, feel ill, and sometimes can get a mild asthma attack (wheezing) from bad BO.

Bunbaker · 20/06/2015 20:04

"then you need face facts & wash/change your clothes daily & use proper deodorant & perfume."

Perfume isn't necessary. A good anti-perspirant is.

londonrach · 20/06/2015 20:22

Sorry op you will smell at the end of the day in a hot train. Believe me you will.

naturallysmellingk · 20/06/2015 20:45

I think this thread has just shown how naive, 99% of people are.

Assuming that the only thing a human can smell of us unpleasant bo. Newsflash humans have a natural scent.

helenahandbag · 20/06/2015 20:46

I work in a university and we have one MSc student that we dread seeing because he smells, quite frankly, fucking disgusting. The first time he came in for a meeting we had to open all of the windows and wash the upholstery on the chair that he used - it really was that bad. Was he just 'smelling like a human'?

You're trying to say that having people physically gag as they walk past you is preferable to smelling like perfume?

LashesandLipstick · 20/06/2015 20:48

For someone to complain about it you must absolutely stink and not just have a natural scent...

naturallysmellingk · 20/06/2015 20:52

No one complained about me, was a general email to a group of people working in hot conditions doing demanding work. Hey we smell like humans at the end of the day.

The smell is perceived as unpleasant, many believe, because most of us have been brought up to dislike it.

www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/173478.php

I think nerture is the cause of people wanting to hide their natural scent with aritifical crap.

Thank god im off to glasto next week :)

naturallysmellingk · 20/06/2015 20:55

And I think antiperspirants will probably in the future be shown to be very harmful, blocking up your pours so they can't sweat using heavy metals.

LashesandLipstick · 20/06/2015 20:56

I can't believe someone emailed several people saying they "smell like humans".

Shitting is natural, do you just drop your pants and do a big turd whenever you feel the need?

naturallysmellingk · 20/06/2015 21:00

The human scent is not the same as public shitting. I didn't say everything natural is fine, I said the natural human smell is fine.

naturallysmellingk · 20/06/2015 21:04

I didn't say perfume was a modern invention I said it was a modern obsession. Very different.

This thread is just about that fag smoke, perfume are acceptable in today's world, but not the human scent. I love a man that smells like a man for instance. I had to wash all my bedding several times to get the smell of one guys aftershave out, gave me a terrible headache.

TheDowagerCuntess · 20/06/2015 21:07

I was recently amazed to discover that a woman who works on the same floor as me (for the past year +) is a smoker.

I have never had a whiff of a fag off her. How does she do it, when all other smokers seem incapable. Hmm

ppolly · 20/06/2015 21:12

But there are some lovely essential oil natural deodorants out there. Neals yard do a fab lemon and coriander one. In actual fact people used to smell of sweat, but it was disguised by a heavy layer of woodsmoke. I once did living history for a fortnight camping with not much shower access and yes we all probably smelled, but the woodsmoke kind of drowned it out. Even medieval people changed their linen regularly and washed their hands and faces.

expatinscotland · 20/06/2015 21:12

There's no 'modern obsession' with perfume. It's been in use for centuries, usually to cover the 'human scent'.

Your human scent is so unpleasant, someone either complained about you or management smelled you and sent out an email like this to avoid confrontation and being polite.

BO stinks.

Soveryupset · 20/06/2015 21:13

After reading a number of research articles on the harmful effects of anti-perspirants, I have stopped using them every day.

Having used loads of anti-perspirant plus perfume every day since I was about 13, I was shocked to realise that I was fine just washing daily, and using some oil/body spray/perfumed potion on my skin. I found that I had to change more often and that if I was going out late in the afternoon/early evening I needed another shower, but I certainly didn't feel I smelled - I must say though that I am not a very sweaty person in general.

I also found that in the very hot summer days, especially if I had to go to the office/travel, I would revert to some from of anti-perspirant, as facilities to freshen up were not available.

Gilrack · 20/06/2015 21:16

Dowager:
Clean hair & clothes every day
Being able to store clothes in a smoke-free room
Being outdoors between fag + work
Not being a person the smell clings to (genetics & luck)
:)

londonrach · 20/06/2015 21:20

Im just glad i dont work with op. Quote op here but think shes part of the 1% who think they dont smell and they dont use anything!
