to not be into this modern obsession with smelling of chemicals rather than like a human

I personally find it normal to have a human smell about you after a hot (28 degrees) working day.

I find the smell of peoples aftershave, perfume and cigarettes quite offensive. Really irrigates my nose and throat.

I seam to be in the minority, I use natural deoderants but after 12 hours I do smell like a human. I've been the one spoken to about my hygiene rather than the smokers or the heavy perfume wearers. I wash every morning, dry skin brush to remove dead skin and use a chemical free deodorant. But I do smell like a human at the end of the day, not like aritical chemicals. I seam to be on the outside in this modern world.

You can't compare perfume and aftershave with cigarette smell!

CrystalCove · 18/06/2015 16:56

I retch if I smell bad BO, it lingers in the air.

wafflyversatile · 18/06/2015 16:57

Of course you can! If it is offensive to you or an irritant to your nose then that's what it is.

Alisvolatpropiis · 18/06/2015 17:06

I think smelling of BO is worst than all the things you listed, personally. Makes me heave.

keepitsimple0 · 18/06/2015 17:19

I can't see how you can object to unscented anti persperant though.

Anti-perspirant does exactly that - stop you from sweating. not sure that's such a great idea.

People smell a bit. Unless it's like whoa in your face BO, I don't care. I find perfume much worse.

expatinscotland · 18/06/2015 17:23

I feel sorry for those who find themselves next to you on public transport. I remember being pregnant with my first and having to get off the bus at times if a person with BO was near.

Sunnydays999 · 18/06/2015 17:26

When u say u wash every morning do u mean a shower or just ur face?

NoIsNotACompleteSentence · 18/06/2015 17:29

You again?

Buy some anti perspirant or go self employed, FFS.

NoIsNotACompleteSentence · 18/06/2015 17:30

God expat, I know what you mean.

I am tiny and when I used to stand up on public transport, my face would be armpit level with the strap hangers

ghostyslovesheep · 18/06/2015 17:33

So you smell of BO so badly people have had to have 'the talk' with you ??

Get yourself to boots and buy some Mitchum and maybe consider a wipe down with some baby wipes half way through the day if it's particularly hot, I swipe under arms and boobs, makes a great difference

snowglobemouse · 18/06/2015 17:34

LashesandLipstick · 18/06/2015 17:36

Keepitsimple, how is that not a good idea?

Potterwolfie · 18/06/2015 17:42

Strong body odour is unpleasant, for those who have to sit in an office smelling it. Yes, it's natural, but it's also unpleasant.

I would look at taking in a washcloth to rinse underarms (with water) during the day, and finding a non-chemical deodorant which works for you. I live in a place where it's 100 degrees most days at the moment, and I perspire a LOT, but I take measures to make sure I don't smell. It can't make you feel very comfortable knowing people are talking about you.

aintgonnabenorematch · 18/06/2015 17:44

Humans don't smell good after a day working in high heat. That's precisely why all these 'chemical' things were invented.

There'd be no need for them if the natural smell of sweaty humans was inoffensive.

Bakeoffcake · 18/06/2015 17:46

Shit is natural too, but no one wants to smell that, so your argument doesn't really stand.

Buy some deodorant that doesn't have a perfumed smell. There are lots about.

WanderWomble · 18/06/2015 17:58

You probably reek OP. It's common courtesy to be clean and non-stinky during the working day. There's nothing unhealthy about using deodorant.

Cornettoninja · 18/06/2015 18:06

I'd put b.o and cigarette smoke in the same category to be honest. I wouldn't expect anyone to go out of their way to purposely smell of either, both are pretty unpleasant and if it's strong enough for someone to ask you to do something about it it's offensive and clearly too much.

Props to you if you want to keep it as natural as possible, but you might want to consider a midday wash and change of top if you're rank enough for people to work up the courage to bring it up to your face. Changing your diet and drinking plenty of water might help too.

Getthewonderwebout · 18/06/2015 18:07

Besides the BO smell, you must be a bit claggy and whiffy from your Vag on a hot day like today. You may call it smelling human but what it says about you is that you don't care about how you present yourself and honestly, you should have more pride in your presentation, whether it's visually or how you smell.

Momagain1 · 18/06/2015 20:12

my dh uses soap and shampoo, every morning and after working out. No deoderant or anti-perpirant. He doesnt smell at the end of the workday, which includes walking to/from station over half a mile morning and evening. If you are reaching the point of offending colleagues before the end of the workday, to the point that someone has felt the need to discuss this with you, then you have a problem. You smell worse than human. Either you have a bacterial or yeast buildup that needs to be washed with something stronger than soap, (clean your pits with witchhazel or an alcohol based 'skin toner' for a week or so. Tea tree oil products might also help) you have some sort of internal problem making your sweat smell odd.

A natural treatment you may not have considered is eating something scented. Rosewater (or other flower flavored) flavored pastry or pastilles, or rosepetal tea, if consumed regularly, come out in your breath and sweat. So does garlic, if your colleagues eat mildly flavored foods, that alone would be noticeable.

There are many, many scented body products still made in traditional ways with essential oils, beeswax and the like. Find your local natural food store, or look online. You can also make useful products yourself.

The problem could also actually be your clothing. Do you have a lot of handwashable blouses and sweaters and are you not washing regularly because they don't look dirty? Are you handwashing things that need a more robust wash? Are your clothes drying too slowly indoors? Ditto your hair. It doesnt have to be washed daily, but if you are air drying it, you could have bacteria on your scalp from it being dampish for hours.

SmallMustard · 18/06/2015 20:19

It's not normal to smell like a bridge dweller though is it? There are many deodorants around that are not full of unpleasant chemicals and perfume is cheap to buy and clothes easily washed and dried on the line at this time of year.

keeptothewhiteline · 18/06/2015 20:38

I hate the smell of perfume and BO.

I wash regularly and use unscented talc under my armpits.
I hate the artificial chemical fragrances, but smelling sweet is pleasant - for me and others.

I use a range of natural plant derived products to keep me fresh. Rose water as cologne, lavender spritz ( can be used underarm and over body for freshness) I totally adore pure Rose oil, Jasmine oil and Ylang Ylang , some of which I use in a body moisturiser.

It is possible to avoid modern chemical smells and products and still smell fresh and fragrant.

OP you are being a minger.

Gilrack · 18/06/2015 20:44

to smell like a bridge dweller Grin

No idea whether this will be relevant to anyone reading but, when my depression's on the downturn, I develop what amounts to a phobia of showering. My coping strategy is wipes Grin I started off with baby wipes, but find cosmetic cleansing wipes more effective - and just as cheap; they're £1 for 3 packs at discount stores. I stick a pack in my bag, too, so I can give myself another little scrub whilst I'm out.

MNers will have the abjabs over this, but the phobia can extend to brushing my teeth as well. For those times, I use mouthwash and chew a lot of gum with xylitol in it. Seems to work: I do ask people now and again if I'm smelly! It's also a good, if mildly skanky, trick to spritz dirty hair with heat styling spray and give it a quick blast of hot air.

Well you natural deodorant is working is it if you have been spoken too . Loads of them smell just like soap anyway (Dove original to name mine) so whats your problem or do you hate soap too? BO is vile and its bacteria multiplying in your sweat and on your skin, think about that. Eugh.
