to not be into this modern obsession with smelling of chemicals rather than like a human

I personally find it normal to have a human smell about you after a hot (28 degrees) working day.

I find the smell of peoples aftershave, perfume and cigarettes quite offensive. Really irrigates my nose and throat.

I seam to be in the minority, I use natural deoderants but after 12 hours I do smell like a human. I've been the one spoken to about my hygiene rather than the smokers or the heavy perfume wearers. I wash every morning, dry skin brush to remove dead skin and use a chemical free deodorant. But I do smell like a human at the end of the day, not like aritical chemicals. I seam to be on the outside in this modern world.

you can get odourless anti perspirant.

I had to have THAT conversation with a colleague about BO. not pleasant for both of us!

TwinkieTwinkle · 18/06/2015 15:59

Have you posted about this before? In addition to a complaint about 'smelling human' they also felt your appearance was sub par?

DragonWithAGirlTattoo · 18/06/2015 16:00

modern? Hmm

The world's first recorded chemist is a person named Tapputi, a perfume maker who was mentioned in a Cuneiform tablet from the 2nd millennium BCE in Mesopotamia. (thanks Wiki)

and agree with the rest of the posters who say, no use deoderant! and wash!!

wafflyversatile · 18/06/2015 16:01

I have no objections to smelling human, but I don't like the smell of BO. I sometimes get it under my arms. I combat it with tea tree oil anti-bacterial wash, even though I don't normally approve of AB washes.

If you've been spoken to about your odour then it suggests you've slipped into BO territory from just human.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_perfume

To date, the oldest perfumery was discovered on the island of Cyprus. Excavations in 2004-5 under the initiative of an Italian archaeological team unearthed evidence of an enormous factory that existed 4,000 years ago during the Bronze Age

wafflyversatile · 18/06/2015 16:01

And what dragon said. It can hardly be considered modern.

Chillyegg · 18/06/2015 16:02

"You like to smell like a human", I'm sorry but what utter bollocks! What other bodily excretion do you want to cover your self in to smell like a human? buy some bloody deodorant...there is nothing worse than working with a stinky colleague.

motherofmonster · 18/06/2015 16:02

i take it you wash your hair and clothes both of which will use chemicals, so i am not sure why you choose to be offended by some chemicals and not others.
And just to be clear it is possible to get products that are strong enough to stop the smell from sweat that are not perfumed.

GlitzAndGigglesx · 18/06/2015 16:06

I think in hot weather you should wear a proper anti perspirant. It's really not fair on your colleagues to have to smell your BO. I used to work with someone who wasn't very fresh and the smell was nauseating for everyone else. To be pulled up on it must be pretty bad

wafflyversatile · 18/06/2015 16:06

Sweat in itself is not the problem. but the bacteria that lives on the sweat excretes the smelly stuff. Normal washes don't always get rid of them from clothes or body, hence the suggestion to use anti-bacterial washes. For clothes that oxy-action stuff should work.

DramaQueenofHighCs · 18/06/2015 16:11

As someone who sweats excessively and so sometimes has problems with BO despite regular washing (and sometimes changing of clothes throughout the day) I can say that people really do hate having 'that' conversation with you - In my case I have even openly asked collegues to tell me if I start to smell a bit as I'd rather know so I can sort it quickly, and yet they're still embarrassed when they have to! (Luckily not very often.)

OP if you don't like chemicals have you tried lemon juice or baking soda? These are natural deodorants that really do work!

DragonWithAGirlTattoo · 18/06/2015 16:13

If someone is 'giving you the talk' then quite frankly you reek! most people dont mind or worry about the odd whiff, but if you smell bad enough for someone to talk to you - then have a wash and put on some deoderant

MaxPepsi · 18/06/2015 16:14

I can't stand perfumes that are to strong and do not suit the person wearing them, but that is much more preferable to smelling the 'great unwashed'

What are you washing with??

My dad has never worn 'any chemicals' the only time he stinks is after he's spent the day in the garden/greenhouse and overexerting himself.

He came home from a day in the office smelling pretty much like he did when he left in the morning. ie fresh!

crispycookie · 18/06/2015 16:15

You can get perfumes that are made of the ingredients' natural oils than those that are made of synthetic chemicals made to smell like a natural scent.

expatinscotland · 18/06/2015 16:15

Maybe your colleagues spray perfume all over to avoid smelling your BO?

NotInGuatemalaNowDrRopata · 18/06/2015 16:15

I used to work in HR so I know the kinds of conversations that go on before the "speaking to" happens. No one wants to bring it up, but a few people must have complained for someone to get the horrible job of having to bring it up with you.

Deodorant doesn't have to be so perfumed that you or anyone else can smell it and you don't have to wear perfume. If you can smell yourself it must be bad, so you really should be showering every morning and washing your hair every other day. I'm afraid "having a wash" isn't enough if you aren't also showering or bathing.

BreakingDad77 · 18/06/2015 16:28

I had one of those underarm 'natural' crystal things (was for travelling so no worries about aerosols etc and lasts long time) Its just solid alluminum oxide mix same as goes in your anti-persp anayway) and you dont smell.

what natural stuff are you using??!

knowsaymuhfuh · 18/06/2015 16:31

Past puberty, a human being on a hot day smells like a dungheap ffs.

Ain't nobody wants to smell that. Get some chemicals going on.

BreakingDad77 · 18/06/2015 16:31

Quick search it was a Crystal Deodorant Stick

elderflowerlemonade · 18/06/2015 16:33

I am inclined to agree people are a little precious about smells but I don't think in this country there's any real excuse to smell (medical conditions an exception.)

ouryve · 18/06/2015 16:35

Smelling not human is not a new thing - even in medieval times, many people doused themselves in perfumes to hide the fact that a good hot bath was a bit of a luxury.

All deodorant contains chemicals, btw.

So, if you're going to use chemicals on your skin, you may as well use one that works. I hate perfumed anything, as most of it makes my nose run or gives me a headache, but I manage to use unscented Mitchum without making myself smell like a perfume counter. On days when it's not hot and I'm not a hormonal mess, it works. Other days, I just wash more.

viva100 · 18/06/2015 16:38

Overly-perfumed smell makes me sick. So does BO. They're equally bad. And no, you can't cover up BO with perfume! Strong BO and perfume together is the worst! You need shower+ anti-perspirant, OP!

Goshthatsspicy · 18/06/2015 16:43

Do you have any friends you could ask? Do you wash your clothes well enough?
Change your bed linen. Wash your hair throughly?
Those three things could also give you an aroma.

MrsTedCrilly · 18/06/2015 16:47

There are many natural things about humans that aren't nice. Human sweaty smell isn't good.. Smelling BO on someone is awful.. You will get complaints if you work in an office! There was a girl at my old work like this, they kept having meetings about it but she never changed..

motherofmonster · 18/06/2015 16:52

I find the smell of peoples aftershave, perfume and cigarettes quite offensive....

So you are happy to admit that these peoples choices offend you and your sense of smell, but you but are completely unwilling to accept the fact that your choice (which is a personal preference with no medical or scientific reasoning behind it) is causing a problem for others...Hmm
