Just popped to Tesco to get some lunch and saw a woman pushing a trolley with a baby sitting in a car seat in it. The baby was about 4 - 6 months old, I would guess and facing the mum. There was an tablet facing the baby blearing it out Finding Nemo.

Is that not a bit too young to be relying on an ipad to be entertaining your child and is not a missed opportunity to by interacting with your child?

The child, quite rightly, was looking at everything going on around them and gave me a lovely big smile.

She was in tesco. How much interaction was she likely to be capable of whilst doing her shopping? Or does every mother have to become fucking wondermother now with seven heads and attached interactive accessories? heaven forbid she wanted to get in and out of tesco as quick as possible and needed to distract a tired/hungry/clingy baby for 10 minutes!

That makes me so mad! It's just lazy parenting, don't get me wrong I'm no Mr tumble and my dd does watch tv , but electronic babysitters are not good at any age especially so young. The mother will be moaning when the child won't play outside in years to come

Maybe mum is run ragged and too tired to 'interact' every second.

Maybe she's poorly and just popped the ipad on so she could get in and out of the shop quickly.

Maybe the baby is usually fretful in the supermarket so the ipad makes it an easier experience for them both.

You saw this child for a few seconds.

I think it's dafter to think that you can make an assessment of what someone 'should be doing' with their baby based on seeing them trying to get their shopping done in Tesco. For all you know they had spent all morning at a baby group or similar, interacting the shit out of one another, and the mum wanted to keep the baby distracted for half an hour so she could get the shopping done.

Jeeezus when will people stop making snap judgements based on a split second snapshot of someone? We're not all Mary bloody Poppins.

She's doing her shopping, I'm sure you'd be more upset if the child was screaming it's head off and she made no attempt to get it to quieten down.

It's nothing to do with being judgmental! Or claiming to be perfect. It's a case of does a 4-6month old need a screen in her face....I don't think so, is it so hard to give the child a box, packet, toy or anything to look at and keep her busy. It's no wonder so many children are slow developmentally

Tbh I can't see why else she would bother doing it otherwise

YANBU I'm not in the UK but here they say no screens before 2 years.

Princess I'm fairly sure ( though no studies to back me up ) that 15 minutes on an iPad in a supermarket is going to cause a developmental delay.
