Friday and Monday

The senior school my ds goes to has an inset day next Friday and on Monday. I expect a few inset days but to do it like this is annoying especially since they have only had a week off not that long ago.

What's the AIBU part?!

Most schools try to tag their inset days onto the holidays but it's not always possible, because the tutors aren't always available.

It sounds as though the school has done the next best thing, and tagged them onto the same weekend.

They're never going to please everyone all of the time.

Maybe a bit annoying, but surely you are given the dates for any inset at the start of the year, so have plenty of time to make provision for childcare, if that is the issue.

Whenever they had these days someone would be unhappy. It gives parents the chance to go away for a long weekend in good weather outside the holiday period.
I'm just waiting for some uninformed poster to say that teachers should train in their holidays.

Would it not be more appropriate to have supply teachers on those days to cover when the other teachers have to do any training

The cost of supply teachers to cover Inset days is not in any schools budget. Schools have to have 5 Inset days per year, taken during term time. Most schools give ample notice to parents, we give school dates out in September and they have all the Inset dates on too. We then put them in the school newsletters and put posters on all the doors.

Most inset days happen because all the teachers are being trained together.

Where would the money come from to replace every single one of them with a supply?

Surely you can care about teacher training and just think it can be organised at a different time when the kids aren't there? Or not involving the entire school so the school remains open. I'd like the police, the supermarket checkout staff etc. all to be trained, but that doesn't mean the service has to be completely suspended to provide that training.

Of course YABU, inset days are pretty reasonable despite that, but it's not an argument against it.

What exactly is your issue OP? Teachers need updating/training and since its senior school, it's not as if you have to organise childcare is it?

You do realise that your children get the same days of education they've always had and inset days were taken from teachers ' holidays? I'm sick of explaining this to the uninformed.

And also its down to the availability of the professionals running the insets, not done specifically to piss you off.

Interestingly my DD's preschool had just decided to include two inset days before the end of term with less than a months notice. Now that is bloody annoying.

Dates for inset days a year in advance??? I wish. Were lucky to get 3 weeks notice.

That said, inset days are required to keep staff well trained. And I get why the need to be different to other schools, in case external trainers are required. But notice, please school.

Thank goodness medical staff in the NHS use alternative methods of training all their staff to keep up to date with medical procedures....

My Dds high school gave them a day off on Friday so the teachers could all go to a music festival ( a very famous one), my dds year has not had one educational outing or trip this year ( to difficult to arrange apparently).

My GP practice is regularly closed for staff training.
