To let go of the general assumption that stories and scenarios on a forum like MN should be true

Because mostly, I fear, they are not. I have to confess I simply do not understand the mindset that would sit and make up a whole story based on nothing but fantasy or what the author might deem a shocking or amusing scenario. I get that nobody will ever know why they do it - I suppose I'm just at the sheer quantity of it at the moment. I'm pretty sure there's only one or two people behind most of it - law of averages says there just cannot be that many bullshitters on one section of a huge forum - or can there?
And if there is a general feeling that a particular poster or posters are just making up shit but not actually trolling - well - is this OK? I don't think it is but I'm prepared to rethink if I'm told it is. What does everyone else think?

If someone feels the need to lie then I feel rather sorry for them. I don't scream and report, why would you do that? What annoys me the most to be honest are the people that feel it's their right to call it, I think to myself, who do YOU think you are. But again, I don't like "jobsworths". Some rules are for breaking. Do these people affect your life? err no. Maybe some others on here invest "too" much?

As far as I know it's not about anyone actually on this thread! I know who I'm referring to - or should I say I know maybe three or four of their MN personas (is that even a word?) but I don't know who anyone else is thinking of.

My SIL is a MNer, from this I have learnt that there are people who will compulsively lie about ridiculously mundane things, but that sometimes the big dramatic things that everyone calls bullshit on, are the rare RL events which impinge on the fantasy world.

There is a current poster(s?) who annoys me greatly. Regardless of whether or not the actual story is bullshit, there are some posters who just have this 'look at me' thing going on which grates. So they'll have several long drawn out threads about their terrible circumstances and, when they deign to post on someone else's thread, it is always to draw attention to themselves.
