To let go of the general assumption that stories and scenarios on a forum like MN should be true

Because mostly, I fear, they are not. I have to confess I simply do not understand the mindset that would sit and make up a whole story based on nothing but fantasy or what the author might deem a shocking or amusing scenario. I get that nobody will ever know why they do it - I suppose I'm just Shock at the sheer quantity of it at the moment. I'm pretty sure there's only one or two people behind most of it - law of averages says there just cannot be that many bullshitters on one section of a huge forum - or can there?
And if there is a general feeling that a particular poster or posters are just making up shit but not actually trolling - well - is this OK? I don't think it is but I'm prepared to rethink if I'm told it is. What does everyone else think?

You are right OP, I think made-up stories should be banned.
As it happens I was talking about this just the other day with Princess Diana on the bus, on the way to visit her grandchildren. She's thinking of giving up her membership of MN altogether and going over to Netmums. I don't blame her one bit.

ilovesooty · 13/06/2015 13:10

On my phone I can't see who started a thread but if it's on certain topics I'm invariably correct in my prediction when I click on it. It's usually whichever attention seeker is posting prolifically at the time.

WorraLiberty · 13/06/2015 13:14

Netmums???

I call bullshit on Sallyingforth's post.

Unless that's just a minor detail that you've changed. In which case I apologise Grin

SoupDragon · 13/06/2015 13:28

I've read the first post on a thread, thought it was ridiculous and then noticed who the poster was. It's amazing how much drama there is in some people's lives.

Sallyingforth · 13/06/2015 13:29

It's true Worra honestly.
She's really fed up with having to name change to avoid being outed on MN. There's lots about it in her official biography that I'm writing. And she's told me all about how she faked that accident so she could elope with Elvis.

SoupDragon · 13/06/2015 13:29

I've also noticed the ones that seem to be fishing for stories - the ones where they ask about a fairly specific scenario and then don't mention anything about their own experiences about that scenario.

AldiQ7 · 13/06/2015 13:52

I totally agree, I have always thought this - I think it ranges from total bullshit lies to a little bit of exaggeration on a story to make it a bit more interesting.

I remember someone claiming that their kid started talking in sentences at 13 months (I actually told them I didn't believe them on the thread). I also think the 'celeb' threads are often full of shit, like the poster whose 'friend' apparently walked in on Florence Welch and Lemmy from Motörhead shagging Hmm (it's always stuck in my mind!)

And I know for a fact that one poster rather embellished a story that she relayed on here - I know this because I was there!

FarFromAnyRoad · 13/06/2015 15:01

Any update Sallying? Marking place .........

Sorry FarFrom but apparently the Palace have been reading all the fictitious posts on MN and don't think it's the right place for serious matters.

Her Majesty has just defriended me on Facebook, and I'm in danger of losing my new Birthday Honour. I'd better follow Di over to NM.

Bye!

I just wish more people would post on my thread - my dog just died, my MIL disinherited us and we became homeless half an hour ago. Not meaning to drip feed but you could all post more you know.

AuntyMag10 · 13/06/2015 16:56

I think 99% is bs on here.

Where do you live OP?

I have a spare dog and home you can have if you live near me?

< PS, wherever you live I'm going to say you're too far away >

Silvercatowner · 13/06/2015 17:15

You should really consider counselling.

magimedi · 13/06/2015 17:21

Farfrom - I do wish you wouldn't drip feed.

FarFromAnyRoad · 13/06/2015 17:39

I've had counselling but she ran off with my DH and the other dog :(

Thanks for the offer Worra - I don't want to say where I live because we're in the witness protection programme after the 'incident'. Can't say more - that was just enough to tickle your curiosity.

OP posts:
WorraLiberty · 13/06/2015 17:52

Can you PM me and tell me and only me, where you live and why you're on a witness protection programme?

This way I can take over your thread and become the most important person on it, after you've logged off.

FarFromAnyRoad · 13/06/2015 17:55

Grin @ Worra - can you also pretend to know me and answer any questions the way you think I would. Ta ever so.

OP posts:
WorraLiberty · 13/06/2015 17:57

No problem OP.

"Print out the thread, roll it into a cone, grease it liberally and shove it up your arse sideways, you atrocious cunt!"

That sort of thing?

plinkyplonks · 13/06/2015 19:03

I completely agree OP!

Some are blatant trolling threads, some sound more like market research or people trying to get info for studies or whatever reason and some sound like complete fabrications for whatever motivation.

I don't understand the point :( I share my experiences openly but it's really disappointing to know people are lying, embellishing especially on serious life matters.

I remember contributing to a thread about a prem baby that turned out to be a fabrication. I can't believe someone would lie about that.

I've found Mumsnet so useful for advice about pregnancy, post natal, depression, life in general - it's sad that a small minority of people are intent on abusing their posting privileges on here.

usualsuspect333 · 13/06/2015 19:16

It's the internet you can be anyone you like. MN is no different to any other forum. Although MN is very easy to troll.

CoogerAndDark · 13/06/2015 19:22

I ignore tediousities in rl and on here.

Hiding a thread takes a second. There will always be people who believe in shit posted on the Internet.

usualsuspect333 · 13/06/2015 19:28

I think some posters who only ever post on MN have a very naive view of the world of internet forums.

FarFromAnyRoad · 13/06/2015 19:54

I do not have a naive view of internet fora - indeed I set up and modded one once so I truly do know what goes on having seen it first hand on a busy forum. I understand that you can be anyone you like and I don't really have a problem with that. If I want to pretend to be 25, size 8, long blonde hair and sitting on a vast trust fund then I could do that and it wouldn't really harm anyone. It's the posting of long winded fictitious stories that blows my mind - especially when it's the same person doing it over and over. Again, I suppose that doesn't harm anyone - I'm just trying to understand why really.
I think it'd be rather nice for there to be a forum where the debate and conversation could take place and develop without the aggravation of dodging the made up incredible shit. Maybe it's an idea whose time has come!
