To wear makeup to the gym?

Dp says it's pointless and too much.

I wear under eye concealer, light foundation, and colour my cheeks so that I don't look half dead!

This thread is proof that a woman's harshest critic is always other women.

LashesandLipstick · 12/06/2015 18:48

Agree with lavender...why it should even bother anyone else whether someone's makeup is on or not

Leafitout · 12/06/2015 19:14

I never ever leave the house without putting on liquid foundation, power foundation and mascara on. When I go to the gym it is always with make on and always will be. Yanbu do what makes you feel comfortable

MrsTedCrilly · 12/06/2015 19:45

Working hard and wearing makeup are not mutually exclusive! My makeup stays intact even though I'm pouring with sweat after an hours session.. means I don't have to apply it after too! (Lazy Grin)

ImSoCoolNow · 12/06/2015 19:48

If you're working up a sweat (doing a worthwhile work out) then you won't look half dead and the make up will sweat off anyway. YABU

goodasitgets · 12/06/2015 19:51

I sweated buckets today doing a 5k incline walk followed by squats and deadlifts (gym has glass roof!)
Eye makeup still intact. I wasn't wearing foundation though

Fabulassie · 12/06/2015 19:52

Not everybody gets all red-faced and dripping with sweat, even doing a "worthwhile workout." I can get my heart rate up too high to be able to hold a conversation and not sweat my makeup off.

Furthermore, people have stupid ideas about what is "worthwhile." It doesn't have to be something out of a Nike advert to be "worthwhile."

Pyjamaramadrama · 12/06/2015 20:05

I'm laughing at people saying others aren't working hard enough if their not sweating.

Some people don't sweat much and some people don't want to work up a massive sweat. Who made you the boss of the gym? I like gentle exercise, people can just exercise to enjoy it it doesn't have to be the ultimate workout.

cardibach · 12/06/2015 20:17

I don't get the concept that leaving the house without make up is somehow being 'not presentable'. I never wear make up, and nobody has died of shock at my unpresentableness yet. I'm 50, so there's been plenty of opportunity. I don't think it's make up shaking, I think many of us really don't understand why a woman needs to put stuff on her face to be socially acceptable. Why aren't men that obnoxious to look at?

LashesandLipstick · 12/06/2015 20:22

Cardibach it's not to be socially acceptable. Some of us just enjoy wearing makeup. I don't wear makeup for anyone else, I wear it because I enjoy it. I don't understand why some women feel superior for not wearing it - it's like bragging about going out in your pjs or not washing your face

BIWI · 12/06/2015 20:31

I don't feel superior for not wearing make-up, and my comments weren't make-up shaming at all.

I genuinely don't get why you would need to wear make-up to the gym. (Although I can see from responses here that some women are intimidated by the whole gym environment and/or have very low self-esteem so they are 'hiding' behind the make-up mask, if you like).

And I really don't get the practicalities of it, because after a hard workout, there is no way that any make-up would have stayed on my face! And I'm very fit, and work out at least three times a week.

I also don't see the point of going to the gym and not working out hard.

chipshop · 12/06/2015 20:34

I only wear make up if it's already on. The few times I've rocked up for my weekly PT session with a fully made up face, my trainer has been visibly shocked and says how amazing I look. So clearly I look crap without it. Grin

Onedayinthesun · 12/06/2015 20:38

Not hiding behind anything here Wink wearing make up is part of who I am, I love products, why would I not wear any when I'm training? Good looking eyebrows and mascara are important to me in or out of the gym. Nothing to do with how hard I work whilst I'm there either. Just personal preference

MrsTedCrilly · 12/06/2015 20:45

Well BIWI, it takes all kinds to make a world.. Some like sweaty workouts, some don't.. Some of us like wearing makeup to the gym.. Some people think of the gym as a social thing. You don't need to understand it. Just accept and move on.. Smile

AdorableMisfit · 12/06/2015 20:58

I don't go to the gym anymore because I just couldn't find the time between work and family commitments (now I grab a half hour to jog down a local trail instead), but when I did, I used to put on foundation as a minimum. I have rosacea and my face goes really read really quickly, and stays red for a long time. People used to ask me if I was OK during/after workouts because my face was so red. I think they thought I might be really unfit or ill and about to keel over. So I started to cover it up with make up so they would leave me alone. If that makes me vain or whatever, so be it.

IronMaggie · 12/06/2015 20:58

I generally train in the evenings after a full day of work, so am wearing make up anyway.

I also know a couple of athletes well (as in proper Olympians), who are never ever seen without foundation and full eyebrows and lashes, on the track, weights room or anywhere else. I'd imagine it's down to personal preference and doesn't mean you're frivolous or have low esteem.

The whole makeup - no makeup debate rears it's head often on here, I just don't know why we tear each other down like this. Each to their own.

LashesandLipstick · 12/06/2015 21:19

Exactly Onedayinthesun. I'm not hiding behind a anything either, but I like makeup and that doesn't end because I'm at the gym. I don't understand why some people get annoyed about it. If you don't want to wear it then don't...

OhItsYouAgain · 12/06/2015 21:35

I would never go out without makeup but I have confidence/anxiety issues. I even wear it when swimming!!

CrabbyTheCrabster · 12/06/2015 21:47

Some right snarky replies here. Hmm

I do not leave the house or answer the door/window/phone without havine a bare minimum of make-up on. Since I was about 13. Tinted moisturiser/BB cream/light foundation over my big red nose/eye shadows/upper cheeks, bit of concealer on numerous spots. Brush of neutral eyeshadow over lids, bit of clear mascara to tame crazy Dennis-Healey eyebrows, possibly tiny bit eyeliner in corners of eye/mascara on eyelash ends.

That's it - my made-up hairdresser SIL thinks I 'don't ever wear any make-up'. That's what I put up to go anywhere though. Takes about 3 minutes.

Gym or not, I don't want to arrive with a big red nose and eyebrows roaming my face in a feral manner.

auldspinster · 12/06/2015 21:48

I keep my make up on if I go after work but don't bother otherwise.

Lavenderice · 12/06/2015 21:54

Ok so this is nothing to do with the gym thing, but...

EddieVeddersfoxymop · 12/06/2015 22:18

I'm another gym person that wears a full face of make up to exercise. I also run and cycle, and will wear full makeup up to do that too. My make up is my "thing", I just can't bring myself to leave the house without my traditional dark eyes and foundation/powder/bronzer. I get up early on sunday mornings for my long cycle of the week and I STILL put it on. You know what? I don't care what others think of me, I like to wear make up, I workout hard enough to be dripping in sweat but it doesn't slide off. Primer is a marvellous invention!

Grin
FuckingLiability · 12/06/2015 22:19

Depends. If I go in the evening I'm still wearing my day makeup. I do sweat so I pat dry with a towel and don't worry too much about it. If I go in the morning I stick on a tiny bit of foundation, blusher and some mascara (as in a really tiny amount so I don't look haggard).

I'm also aghast at the women in full makeup, hair down and jewellery. It would annoy the living shit out of me to have my hair sticking to me and earrings bobbing against my neck as I work out.

cardibach · 13/06/2015 20:53

it's like bragging about going out in your pjs or not washing your face Lashes first of all, I'm not bragging, and second, it's really, really, not like that! I have no problem with anyone enjoying anything (although I find it hard to believe wearing makeup is enjoyable...) but you are suggesting makeup's akin to basic hygiene. I'm erfectly acceptable without it. Men are,so why not me? Are men with no makeup effectively in pjs and smelly? Hmm so why are women?

romeomorningwhisky · 13/06/2015 21:24

I don't wear much make up to the actual gym but my 3x a week fitness class is full on battle trying to look like I'm not wearing any make up.
I sweat buckets but there's a lot to be said for decent blusher, waterproof mascara & eye liner.
I put more effort into that than day to day make up,
I'm not vain at all but I do meet men there so it doesn't do any harm Wink
