not tot want to eat halal meat?

I am finding it harder and harder to avoid. I do my best to ensure any meat I eat has lived and died humanely, and I think a lot of halal meat dies cruelly. I don't want to eat it. But all meat provided at work is halal. Much of the places to eat out cheaply around work and home is halal, and I've even heard a lot of the local super market meat is also halal, even if it isn't marked.

Why can't we have an option of guaranteed non halal meat clearly marked and available?

OfaFrenchMind I was referncing sunny bringing the animal welfare of the french subject up, not you, keep up.

CoffeeAndBiscuitsPlease · 09/06/2015 11:42

Yes lets leave the french alone and get back to those bloody muslims and their religious meat that we are forced to eat everyday.

ArcheryAnnie · 09/06/2015 11:44

If anyone does want to find meat which has had a good life, and will have been sent to the slaughterhouse in reasonable transport (ie not hundreds of miles packed with a thousand other animals), it's worth looking up your local city farm. Some do meat (lamb and pork, usually) and the animals will have had a pretty sweet time before getting the chop.

ArcheryAnnie · 09/06/2015 11:45

(Coffee - "being French" is not incompatible with "being Muslim".)

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 09/06/2015 11:48

Here we go again.

OP - I don't want to eat Halal meat it's cruel!

Various posters - The vast majority of Halal meat is stunned.

OP and others - Lalala can't hear you...

Various posters - Animal slaughter is pretty nasty whether or not its done with a Quran recital / prayer or not.

If you don't want to eat Halal meat because you don't want eat food linked to another religion - fine. If you don't want to eat unstunned meat - that's fine. But to refuse to eat stunned Halal meat on cruelty grounds is bizarre.

VeganCow · 09/06/2015 11:51

altered you certainly are in the minority, because if you weren't, there would be no such thing as ritual slaughter such as halal, ie, it would be meaningless to any and all religions.

CoffeeAndBiscuitsPlease · 09/06/2015 11:51

Yes Archery, can't forget those bloody french muslims too. Making us eat their meat. Talking to our animals. sigh

BigRedBall · 09/06/2015 11:54

I check the ingredients of loads of foods when I'm shopping. No one has ever stopped me or asked me what I'm doing!

I also check labels inside clothes to see what material they're made from. No ones ever asked me what I'm doing.

I also read and check what petrol I put in my car...guess what? No ones ever asked me what I'm looking at and why.

People don't comment on you doing things slowly over here. We just wait and huff and puff. Just look at any supermarket checkout thread Grin.

maxxytoe · 09/06/2015 11:54

I'm vegetarian
But can someone explain how not wanting to eat halal/kosher meat is racist?

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 09/06/2015 11:57

You've got to admire people's business skills
Halal Fois Gras??
prime.peta.org/2010/08/is-there-such-a-thing-as-halal-foie-gras

The writer argues that the production methods make fois gras haram as the birds are harmed and diseased by the feeding process.

" Making us eat their meat. Talking to our animals. "

Mais out, c'est terrible!!

SunnyBaudelaire · 09/06/2015 11:58

I meant 'oui' naturellement

Stinkersmum · 09/06/2015 11:58

maxxy it's not. Ignorant and stupid? Yes. Racist, no. The last time I looked, islam and Judaism were religions, not races.

zz21653zz · 09/06/2015 12:01

Here are the views of the RSPCA.

Mrsjayy · 09/06/2015 12:04

It isnt racist muslim isnt a race.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 09/06/2015 12:05

Refusing to eat halal meat on spurious grounds is questionable. Halal meat in supermarkets will have been stunned in just the same way as non-halal meat so its production is no more cruel. So if both types of meat are killed in the same way apart from a prayer, cruelty can't be the motivation for your refusal to eat it. That's when you start to wonder why people are objecting so strongly.

If, for example, a practising Catholic (I am a lapsed RC & DH is muslim) says they don't want to eat meat blessed by another religion people should respect that as part of their expression of their Catholic faith. On the other hand, if someone is objecting because halal slaughter is a sign of Muslim barbarity (which is the undertone on some of these threads) ignoring the fact that most halal meat is pre-stunned you have to ask what their real motive is.

Stinkersmum · 09/06/2015 12:08

Chaz I think assuming they have a motive is giving them too much credit... they've just read the Daily Mail for too long.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 09/06/2015 12:19

Stinkersmum
You may be right.

On a previous thread, when I stated that the vast majority of halal meat was pre-stunned someone refused to believe the figure even though thay came from the RSPCA Confused.

What we need is an RSPCA official holding the report with a trademark Daily Mail sad face in the paper, then people might believe it.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 09/06/2015 12:19

they not thay

Stinkersmum · 09/06/2015 12:22

The RSPCA say 84%, the FSA state 88%. But you know that will not be good enough. Or it'll be simply ignored.

Stinkersmum · 09/06/2015 12:23

Ps Lol at the sad face comment GrinGrinGrin

PyjamasLlamas · 09/06/2015 12:26

I am Muslim. I only eat halal meat. And actually only non-stunned halal meat. I'm sure I will be shot down in flames.
Many Muslims feel that to abide 'strictly' to Islamic law you have to slaughter the animal absolutely correctly and that is through non-stunning. This is the position of some scholars not all of course as some have allowed stunning. I don't eat non-stunned meat.
Thankfully I live in Britain where I have that choice as does everybody else to eat what they like. The hand wringing and uproar over being forced to eat halal meat is ludicrous. There are non Muslin butchers on every high st as well as a million supermarkets all selling non halal meat.
This is not an issue. It is an issue only because some people want to have a bash at those backward savage Muslims and their uncivilised ways.
I believe non stunned meat is more humanely killed. But that is neither here not there. Its really irrelevant because not one single person in Britain has ever been forced to eat this meat despite what people post

PyjamasLlamas · 09/06/2015 12:28

By the way I'm not some fundamentalist. I don't wear hijab, I wear 'western' clothing, work, fully British blah blah blah

lem73 · 09/06/2015 12:30

I have sympathy with anyone who says they want to think animals are treated as humanely as possible when slaughtered. If that's what you believe then make an effort to buy good quality meat and know where it comes from. However declaring you want to avoid ONLY halal meat makes me a little suspicious as obviously there are plenty of non halal sources of meat that don't treat animals humanely.
Fwiw my dh is muslim and his family still live in his home country. One half of his family are from an agricultural background and are extremely fussy about food standards. Dh has witnessed many halal slaughters and says the animals die very quickly. I have to add that my dad (Christian) used to inspect slaughter houses as part of his job and he told me a long time ago (ie before I met dh) that having seen many methods of slaughter, he had no problem with the halal method.
Even though dh is a Muslim we don't seek out halal meat. We have bought from Asda but haven't been happy with the quality or not knowing where it has come from. We'd rather go for free range and organic.

Klayden · 09/06/2015 12:32

The RSPCA have considerably fucked up priorities, so their opinion means very little to me. They are utterly useless despite the vast amounts of money that have.
