not tot want to eat halal meat?

I am finding it harder and harder to avoid. I do my best to ensure any meat I eat has lived and died humanely, and I think a lot of halal meat dies cruelly. I don't want to eat it. But all meat provided at work is halal. Much of the places to eat out cheaply around work and home is halal, and I've even heard a lot of the local super market meat is also halal, even if it isn't marked.

Why can't we have an option of guaranteed non halal meat clearly marked and available?

all meat production is cruel, all of it. If you want to be humane buy organic, top range stuff- or stop eating meat

as others have stated

x2boys · 09/06/2015 09:52

I,m not sure supermarkets can sell halal meat by stealth , the asda I shop at sells halal and non halal there is a very large Muslim community where I live but it is all labeled as halal.

If the OP doesn't want to eat halal meat then that's her prerogative and she shouldn't have to go veggie in order to avoid it. Her workplace (and fast food places etc) shouldn't cater for one group of people to the exclusion of another.

Chattymummyhere · 09/06/2015 10:15

I won't buy halal I don't believe in the raw it's killed. I also won't feed my dogs halal. After speaking to an ex Muslim who argued her case that halal meat is intact very poorly looked after and more is not stunned than stated and how even the Muslim workers will still abuse the animals before and after cutting throats I would rather stick to the normal way that's been used here, I also don't agree with it being sold or served by stealth as other people's beliefs mean they cannot eat it.

Exactly. It should be clearly labelled and an alternative on offer.

itsbetterthanabox I think you need to look up what the word racism actually means! Not wanting to eat halal meat is not racist. Nor is it anti-religion. Its about not wanting to eat meat that has been slaughtered in a particular way. Not sure why I am arguing this, being a veggie and all!

Mrsjayy · 09/06/2015 10:23

Did you know cows attach themselves to the herd they panic going for slaughter they are not lead to death calmly its fucking horrific have you never driven past a van full of cows do you think they are comfortable on their way to be killed stun guns fail cows and sheep die painfully thats all nonhalal and anyway halal meat is stunned mostly due to regulations yabu and a bit of a fool if you believe animals have a good death .

Chattymummy, one ex Muslim does not an authority on Islamic or any other kind of slaughter make.

Believe it or not we aren't all just hanging around waiting for opportunities to torture defenceless animals. In fact halal slaughter specifically demands that the welfare of the animal before slaughter be a primary consideration. I don't deny that this is not lived up to in practice but I also don't accept that conventional slaughter is any better.

The posters going on about ritual slaughter, what do you imagine this involves as opposed to conventional slaughter?

I do agree with posters who think halal and kosher meat should be labeled as such so Sikhs are also catered for and anyone who imagines that we are standing in pools of blood cackling gleefully as the moonlight glints off the long curved blades in our hands.

OfaFrenchMind · 09/06/2015 10:43

I do not want to eat halal too, just because I refuse that part of the price I pay for my food is going toward paying an imam's wages, or fee.
I eat pork quite a lot, or kasher :)

Viviennemary · 09/06/2015 10:43

YANBU. I feel exactly the same. An feel it is my right not to eat Halal meat. I also think all meat sold should be marked if it is Halal meat. So people can make an informed choice. This has been done by stealth.

Mrsjayy · 09/06/2015 10:46

Paying an imans fees what Confused

This thread makes for very depressing reading.

I would love to know what you all think halal slaughter actually is. I would also like to know why imams and Muslims are such a thing to be feared.

I guess I should just give up now thinking that my kids will ever be welcome in British society, right?

Non halal abattoirs are every bit as grim and cruel you know. The animals aren't licked to death by kittens.

That made me laugh Grin. But it's true you know. Stunning doesn't always work. Killing an animal for meat isn't a humane act full stop. If you don't want an animal hurt when being killed (oxymoron in itself) then don't eat meat. Or just eat pig.

I don't get these halal meat threads. No ones got a gun to your head forcing you to eat it. Confused. Hardly a matter to start a thread about.

I know one Muslim does not speak for all, I was speaking about what she herself had told me though.

Yeah right? Of course some Muslims still abuse the meat/animals again does not mean all do but that comment was in regards to the one about non halal being abused, it happens in all places.

I do not wish to eat meat that's had its throat slit and been prayed over. I do not wish to eat religious meat.

timelyreminder · 09/06/2015 10:56

No ones got a gun to your head forcing you to eat it.

But how can people make an informed choice if there's no labelling on meat to tell them whether it fits their requirements?

My BF is working in a food processing company, and they get the halal stamp. For that, they have to pay an Imam to come and pray over the line and food. I do not want to participate to that.

BigRedBall · 09/06/2015 11:00

No, because apparently stunning makes everything all hunky dory, so a pig will definitely have been stunned before being butchered.

Re: labelling. Stop buying meat from the supermarket and start going to a proper butchers so you know exactly what you're getting.
