Topless Man Syndrome

It's summer, which can mean only one thing.
Hoards of topless, sweaty, greasy, overweight, paunchy, balding usually British men in the Supermarkets, walking down the High Streets, on the school run, you name it, they're doing it.

They are usually to be seen swaggering waddling along, clutching the t shirt that has been whipped off their sweaty torsos in their greasy mitts. Sometimes it's flung nonchalantly over one shoulder.

I counted 5 today. They fascinate and disgust me at the same time.
Is it a British thing?
Do men from other countries behave in this way? Or is it just our lot? Shock

On the beach? Fair enough.
Out in public? No - put a shirt on fgs. We don't wanna see your moobs.

Doesn't bother me in the slightest; in fact, I admire their confidence.

Silverdaisy · 06/06/2015 23:21

Tbh, most times I see this is with men who are slim. But it still looks horrible, so I don't think this is a size issue. The majority I see also have a football top tucked hanging out the back of their jeans. By that I mean, neither can they think it's rude to be topless, but also if they do put at top on it is football colours - also disliked by restaurants.

echt · 06/06/2015 23:21

While I agree that shirtless is grim, I feel it is so in all circumstances that are not at home or on the beach.

The special disgust for those who are overweight, to men who are balding, is out of order.

Possibly we need a paper bag over the head for the uglies, year round. Hmm

Preminstreltension · 06/06/2015 23:38

Happens as soon as the thermometer tips over 16 degrees.

Along with the reckoner who has gone for flip flops and surfer dude shorts and the poor misguided girl in a tiny sundress. They are all actually freezing and the girl feels like a twit but the men think they are ace Grin

EyesCrossedLegsAkimbo · 06/06/2015 23:53

It's summer? Fuck me.

Come and live here, on a rock off the west coast of Scotland. Nine degrees is the best it's got this year. No fucker is taking his or her clothes off outside. well some are but not for the weather

Sparklingbrook · 06/06/2015 23:57

I don't care what size they are. Just put your shirt back on.

meyesmyeyes · 07/06/2015 07:53

For the sake of fairness, I don't like seeing skinny or fit men walking round the streets topless either.
On a beach, in a park, round a pool, in your garden, fine.

There's a time and a place.
And it IS mainly British men that do this strange practice. Why?

And as a poster said,in some countries you can get fined!

Another sunny one today. This should be interesting Grin

I will beat your 5-a-day, I know it!

MrsItsNoworNotatAll · 07/06/2015 08:13

It's rife round here.

A sunny day in February can have the men walking round topless and women with sun dresses or shorts and vests on.

There is a time and place for this sort of thing. The beach, your garden - fine. Supermarkets, streets - not so.

But of course people are free to wear whatever they please at anytime of the year but I'm also free to be judgy about it Grin

SanityClause · 07/06/2015 08:14

I knew there'd be a thread about this, soon, when I saw a topless man, the other day. I even remember the opinions of some of the posters from previous years (Sparkling doesn't like it; usual doesn't mind them.)

I really must get more of a life!

Buglife · 07/06/2015 08:15

It is grim. In Rome when it's hot all the men are still in suits, shirts etc. In the Supermarket I think it's foul, it's not exactly hot there with all the fridges, put some clothes on!

Only1scoop · 07/06/2015 08:18

It's rogue my we saw a dad he appeared to be with ds trotting by him just the same.... In the middle of town....Pale burned and shirtless.... A proper chip off the old block. Confused

Aussiemum78 · 07/06/2015 08:20

Topless or in swimwear without shorts is only ok within 1km of a beach or pool.

Unless you are mowing the lawn, or jogging topless is ok then.

meyesmyeyes · 07/06/2015 08:23

Buglife, even though it's hot, the Italian men keep their shirts on when they are away from the beaches.

It's probably cooler as well.

Mousefinkle · 07/06/2015 08:33

Agreed. Seen a few young boys (no more than six) topless too, starting 'em young I guess. Also noticed a few young women with their bellies out and let's just say, they weren't flat... I admire the confidence but it's not a sight most people particularly want to see I'd say.

There's just no need for it away from the beach or swimming pool.

Sparklingbrook · 07/06/2015 08:42

I like to be consistent in my dislikes sanity. Grin

Buglife · 07/06/2015 08:45

Meyes yes in most countries where it's actually hot a lot they actually understand the 'keep clothes on but stay out of the sun' argument! Clearly you can live your normal daily life in hotter temperatures without having to remove all your clothes to survive.

RainbowFlutterby · 07/06/2015 08:56

But if a paunchy unattractive woman goes out dressed in a mini skirt and cropped top and you started a thread about complaining about it you'd be ripped to pieces for "fat-shaming".

Bunbaker · 07/06/2015 08:57

It hasn't been hot enough round here yet to see any topless men. I can't say it bothers me, although the type that do go topless tend to be the ones that shouldn't.

PUGaLUGS · 07/06/2015 09:02

My colleague and I discussed this very subject the other day and then on Friday she came into work and couldn't stop laughing... She passed a man walking around with no top on and he had it tucked into his belt loop.

I think it looks bloody awful.

OrlandoWoolf · 07/06/2015 09:06

Indeed. What is it about the male torso?

Women around here - of all types of bodies - wear clothes which reveal loads of flesh. Some toned. Some.....less toned. They have short shorts, mini dresses, crop tops etc.

But that's ok because it's not the male torso.

In general, most men don't show flesh. But many women do show a lot of flesh.

What is it with the flabby, hairy, beer bellied male torso that you don't want to see - but you're ok with the flabby, untoned female legs?

NittyDora · 07/06/2015 09:06

Inkle - I love spotting the pale glimmer of the first taps aff of the season, its like the first cuckoo of spring :) They're late this year though, still to spot one. Last year I
saw one in April amongst the daffodils in a
park in Kilmarnock.

meyesmyeyes · 07/06/2015 09:06

I'm trying to think if I saw this phenomenon in Florida. Hmm

One balmy summer evening 20 years ago I was a young teacher at parents night. Several male partners attended topless, including one family where the lady brought her ex and new boyfriend with her and both males were shirtless. Far too many nipples for parent/ teacher interviews.
