Is it official? Do you have to have famous parents to be a model these days?

It used to be that models were actually models, plucked out of obscurity and quite often, poverty.

Now it's all celebrity offspring. The Jagger girls are simply not model material. Gigi Hadid might have been a successful catalog model were it not for the Real Housewives connection. Kendall Jenner. Haley Baldwin.

Not a real model in the whole lot. It's perverse.

I think I know what you mean Feminine. I just have trouble differentiating one child's looks from another IYKWIM. They are just children and to be studying their appearance/attractiveness is an uncomfortable thing to do.

Anewmeanewname · 01/06/2015 17:13

Alice Dellal is another one.

OhEmGeee · 01/06/2015 17:20

I've always found it amazing how celebrity offspring are always so talented at being a model/DJ/designer/TV presenter/journalist.

ApplePaltrow · 01/06/2015 17:24

In a way though, it's almost a good thing. The uglier they are (and they are pretty average looking), the less of an unobtainable standard they create for teenage girls. And since they actually have to do something to be successful (be active on social media), it at least is better than sleeping with Terry Richards.

Most of the Zoella crew are able to sell cosmetics and be famous without having to get into debt to an agency or have to sleep with a photographer - win, win.

GoodbyeToAllOfThat · 01/06/2015 17:31

Mind you I find that less irksome than the quite popular trend of chef's wives publishing cookery or lifestyle books aka Tara Ramsay, Jools Oliver and that man that does the baking and had an affair.

Yes. And the inevitable Vogue interview where they show up looking fresh-faced and beautiful, wearing not a scrap of makeup.

Carving yourself a non career off the back of your husband (wags and chef's wives I'm looking at you) is just asking for trouble when they go and fuck a hooker behind your back.

Then the only "career" available to you is "ex girlfriend/wife of so and so" which must be just about the most tragic thing going...

rookiemere · 01/06/2015 17:47

I suppose the fashion world and teenagers self image might indeed be a bit healthier if the modelling world was indeed full of Daisy Lowe lookalikes - pretty but not outstanding, thinnish but not skinny.

I'm certainly not saying that she is not a pretty girl. But if she or anyone else at all thinks that she has got a single modelling job based on anything other than her family connections, then they are deluded. It's a shame because back in the real world she could be doing something she is actually talented at.

Does anyone remember when Sophie Dahl hit the scene in all her pre-diet full glory days? Now she was magnificent and truly had something unique, regardless of her parentage.

undoubtedly · 01/06/2015 17:48

Yes and now she looks like a lollipop...

Feminine · 01/06/2015 17:54

sparkling
No, you are right.
I am a bit fickle and curious....Grin

Sunsoo · 01/06/2015 18:01

Kelly Osbourne anyone?

I think she has tried just about every fork in the celebrity road by now...

Sparklingbrook · 01/06/2015 18:02

I think you have an interest based on your experience Feminine. Smile

StillFrankie · 01/06/2015 18:05

Kendall Jenner is gorgeous as is Cindy Crawford's daughter.

As for the others YANBU

GoodbyeToAllOfThat · 01/06/2015 18:10

Cindy Crawford's daughter is definitely a beauty. As is her son.

think they are 'models' in as much as they are paid to wear clothes, but it is more the go to parties with my famous friends and get my picture in the tabloids type of paid than actual modelling in the traditional sense. This definitely applies to Daisy Lowe, a quite pretty ordinary looking girl who seems to have her own personal pap following her everywhere she goes. There area few like that, including Alexa Chung!

GratefulHead · 01/06/2015 18:13

Lily Cole is a relative of exDH, her parents were not famous or anything . It's a standing joke that she didn't inherit the same genes as the rest if the family who are prone to piling on the weight. Lily is tall and willowy, DH and the rest of his family are short with a tendency to being plump. It's a standing joke among them that they are related to "a supermodel".

SiobhanSharpe · 01/06/2015 18:14

Has anyone answered the question upthread about who Kendall Jenner and presumably her(?) parents are/were. There seems to be a Kylie Jenner too?... is Kendall M or F? Is Kylie a sibling?

VivienScott · 01/06/2015 18:20

Rumur Willis. Just not pretty.

VivienScott · 01/06/2015 18:23

It always strikes me as highly amusing that the Brits spent years pulling down the privileged classes of the gentry, just to essentially rebuild them with vacuous celebrity.

Songlark · 01/06/2015 18:28

There's no way Georgia Jagger would be a model without the help of daddy. She's only 5ft 5in, not even of the required height. Very average looks too.

fancyanotherfez · 01/06/2015 18:29

Maybe part of the problem is that the lifestyle they grew up in is so far removed from ordinary lives that it seems almost impossible for them to contemplate working hard at school o get a few A levels then working in a bank or something for 40 grand when you can use your parents connections to swan around in expensive clothes and earn ££££. I think the eldest Geldof girl has a job, but the rest of them and their mates just seem to be passing the time pretending to be models/ DJ's / 'actors' until the trust fund kicks in and they can tinker with something else for the rest of their lives.

undoubtedly · 01/06/2015 18:30

Yes and I give you.... Lady Victoria Hervey. What is she for?

Greythorne · 01/06/2015 18:30

Agreed, Cindy Crawford's children both have bags of model potential. Gorgeous.

mynewpassion · 01/06/2015 18:33

I think there's two class of models: real models like jordan dunn and Karlie kloss and celebrity models like Brooklyn beckham and daisy lowe. We just hear a lot more of the celebrity models because of their last names.

I hope brooklyn doesn't follow the footsteps of the a couple of the linekar boys.

fancyanotherfez · 01/06/2015 18:41

I read an article on the Jenner girls in the Sunday Times (honest!) so I am now up on my reality TV offspring. They are half sisters to the Kardashians. Their father is Bruce Jenner, who was a famous athlete and their mother is the infamous Mummy Kardashian. I think they are beautiful but the point is that there are many girls who are pretty and for some reason want to be models. They are treated atrociously and have to trudge around trying to get work and starving themselves half to death to do it, whereas these celeb offspring don't have to. Actually maybe that is a good thing. Leave the modelling to the average looking children of ageing rock stars and let these girls look elsewhere for a living, perhaps one that doesn't degrade them so much.

Itscoldouthere · 01/06/2015 18:42

I know that Brooklyn looked around Dulwich College a few years ago but he didn't join.

Someone told me he was at the private art college in Hampstead, but not sure if that's true. It is full of very well known children including Jude Laws son, one of the Maxwell/Freuds and Princess Olympia of Greece.
