Is it official? Do you have to have famous parents to be a model these days?

It used to be that models were actually models, plucked out of obscurity and quite often, poverty.

Now it's all celebrity offspring. The Jagger girls are simply not model material. Gigi Hadid might have been a successful catalog model were it not for the Real Housewives connection. Kendall Jenner. Haley Baldwin.

Not a real model in the whole lot. It's perverse.

When I saw this photo of Jude Law's family, I thought, "wow!".

Both Jude and Sadie look special, something very engaging about them. Whereas the kids all look extremely normal. All attractive without having model looks, IMHO. But no doubt they all have contracts because of who they are / know.

You see this nepotism a lot in the arts as well, witness the current batch of Eton educated actors.

The connections can't hurt, but I actually think a lot of this is to do with people from wealthier backgrounds not needing to earn money or pay rent (necessarily) while they bum around the art world for eight years in the hope of hitting the big time. Not to say they aren't also talented, but so are lots of people and most of them can't afford to wait around for their big break.

MonaLottie · 01/06/2015 16:16

Charlotte Casiraghi is utterly ravishing but I doubt she would have been signed up by Gucci and had several Vogue covers if she wasn't the DD of Princess Caroline of Monaco. Can't really imagine her touting her portfolio around the offices of editors and photographers.

Greythorne · 01/06/2015 16:18

Yes, yes, yes. Sam Cam's sister working for Vogue? Well, having a paid for flat and pocket money for the first few years when she was working for buttons can't have hurt can it?

championnibbler · 01/06/2015 16:31

YANBU.
they say only one in 10,000 people has the makings of a model.
a true supermodel is one of about only 50 models in the world.

the likes of gigi hadid, kendall jenner, cara delevigne ect be merely jobbing models if they didn't have famous parents.
then the likes of ireland and hailey baldwin are very low rent indeed.

the true supermodels were christy turlington, cindy crawford, linda evangelista, helena christensen, karen mulder etc back in the 1990s.

today only karlie kloss come close and even she has issues with those really thin lips of hers.

MonaLottie · 01/06/2015 16:33

Don't forget Twiggy and The Shrimp!

RustyParker · 01/06/2015 16:37

Sparkling Brooklyn was with Arsenal's academy but don't know if he still is.

Eastpoint · 01/06/2015 16:37

Even 28 years ago Vogue paid badly - a friend was working as a secretary having read English at Exeter & done a journalism course - paid £6K. I was paid £9.75k working in the city having done a secretarial course, no university degree & 4 years younger than her. Even in the 80s there were jobs you couldn't afford to do without a parental subsidy or connections, all those nice gels who worked at Christies or in PR companies. My boss didn't believe that I lived on what he paid me & that I didn't get an allowance. It's the same if you want to work in TV or film, working as a runner is really badly paid so the jobs go to people who have little flats in Battersea or Pimlico their parents don't use. no not bitter at all

Eastpoint · 01/06/2015 16:39

The Beckhams went round Latymer Upper in Hammersmith 18 months ago with Brooklyn. I thought he'd been dropped from an Academy.

EmeraldThief · 01/06/2015 16:39

Daisy Lowe is very pretty but she's not a model. Being pretty doesn't always mean someone has what it takes to be a model, Daisy is just too heavy to be a catwalk mode. Harsh by true. If her mum wasn't a member of the Primrose Hill set I doubt she'd ever have got a modelling contract.

Feminine · 01/06/2015 16:40

I think the children are more attractive than their mother.
Jude is photogenic, but Sadie was never a model anyway.

rookiemere · 01/06/2015 16:40

Daisy Lowe was absolutely the first name that came to mind, you do have to wonder how and why she came to end up with a modelling career. She's a pretty enough girl, but not particularly memorable, or indeed model shaped.

I think I read somewhere ( probably sleb twaddle on here) years ago that her mother Pearl Lowe has lots of dirt on lots of people and therefore lots of stings to pull.

Sparklingbrook · 01/06/2015 16:42

i think Arsenal let Brooklyn go.

Eastpoint would that be to do normal A Levels? Presuming he is currently mid GCSEs like my DS1 who is the same age?

Greythorne · 01/06/2015 16:42

Feminine

Agreed, Sadie Frost was not a model, but she has a star quality about her.

I think all the kids look very nice and normal.

rookiemere · 01/06/2015 16:42

Mind you I find that less irksome than the quite popular trend of chef's wives publishing cookery or lifestyle books aka Tara Ramsay, Jools Oliver and that man that does the baking and had an affair.

Seriously do people have no self respect ? - don't they know the only reason anyone is remotely interested or even bothered to publish/interview them is because of their famous spouse.

Sparklingbrook · 01/06/2015 16:43

I can't look at children and think 'attractive' or 'model material'. They are just children.

Eastpoint · 01/06/2015 16:46

Sparkling I presume so but my source is in the year below (current yr10). If he was looking for A levels I'd have thought he'd have looked this autumn but perhaps they got special treatment? It's hard to get into LU for A Levels, 8A*s + usually.

Sparklingbrook · 01/06/2015 16:49

It will be interesting to see what he does East. Perhaps the long term plan is University?
I don't know what Brand Beckham require of him.

Greythorne · 01/06/2015 16:50

Sparkling

I am much more base than you :)

Sparklingbrook · 01/06/2015 16:52

'base'? What's that?

Thisishowyoudisappear · 01/06/2015 16:53

I'm surprised PPs don't like Daisy Lowe. Admittedly she's not standard catwalk material, but she's gorgeous! I think she has a real glow about her. She's far better looking than either of her parents, too.

Amber Le Bon and Tali Lennox are nothing special IMO - attractive yes, but not stunning. i think Georgia May Jagger is fab - Rimmel's advertising is just crap. It doesn't even do Kate Moss any favours.

Alexa Chung does a lot of endorsement type stuff with different brands and I think she works with Chanel maybe, or used to? She has recently had a book published. I have no idea if it's any good! She seems to have plenty of work, anyway.

Eastpoint · 01/06/2015 16:54

I'm sure my source will let me know if he starts there in Sept. I think he went to Tim Henman's old school for a bit, it's near Chelsea's Academy.

Feminine · 01/06/2015 16:56

sparkling
If the parents have been known for their looks, l do tend to look at how the kids have turned out.
I know it is shallow.
My excuse is l was a model for 20 years, and so was DH. Grin

and l really hope that doesn't look 'showy - offy' :)

kissmethere · 01/06/2015 16:57

Have to agree. Not to go off track, but I think it's similar to private gigs which no one ever gets to go to unless you're famous or connected. I'm sick of hearing about them and seeing and the selected same olds stumbling out in the press.
(Obviously I sound jealous, I am a little bit)

AldiQ7 · 01/06/2015 17:04

I can't believe people are saying Kendall Jenner isn't all that - I think she is stunning! Shame she has been pushed into being Lewis Hamilton's beard girlfriend.
