To think blue eyes are both a blessing and a curse

Blessing: Nations and western worlds favourite eye colour. Grin

Curse: I forgot my sunglasses on a day out with dc and I could barely see in the sun. (Probably added about a million wrinkles around the eye Grin).

OP posts:

I don't think it's necessarily racist (she's not saying her ideal world would be Arian!)

My favourite colour eyes are vivid green. Never seen someone in real life with the green eyes that I find magical on tv - do they enhance eyes digitally?

morelikeguidelines · 27/05/2015 21:56

One of the strangest OPs I have come across.

SoozeyHoozey · 27/05/2015 22:03

I have very dark brown almost black eyes and get loads of compliments on them. My family is of Mediterranean origin and we have always had tons of compliments about our large dark eyes and long eyelashes. I'm in Spain at the moment and the men and women are absolutely stunning with their olive skin and dark colouring. I definitely find it more attractive than pale eyes and pinky pale Anglo skin.

Laquitar · 27/05/2015 22:10

I am usually the first person to challenge any racist comment on internet or in real life, at school, at work, email mp's, complain to newspapers etc but i read the op as
light hearted.
We are a dark eye family, foreigners and mixed in case you think we are blonde and blue eyes, i didn't get offended. Jesus!

dementedma · 27/05/2015 22:11

I have green eyes. Just saying.Grin

chocolateyay · 27/05/2015 22:12

I think green is positively the best colour for eyes. I have very green eyes...

FryOneFatManic · 27/05/2015 22:20

I'm happy to talk about eye colour from the scientific POV, but I couldn't agree with them being "both a blessing and a curse" as it's just luck what you inherit.

I do find I need sunglasses a lot, and am grey/blue eyed. Definitely more blue than DP and the DCs, who are steel grey with a greenish hint. My paternal grandfather had the bluest eyes I ever saw.

My Dad has brown eyes, with one darker than the other. Didn't stop him getting cataracts. OTOH, optician has told me I have changes in my right eye that could well lead to a cataract, and I'm only 46 (hopefully it doesn't happen yet).

Seems that the cataract changes could be equally related to being short sighted, it's not just eye colour.

But if the studies are correct, then the bit about feeling less pain rings true, I do have a high pain threshold.

As for studies on what attributes men might find desirable, I'm really not interested.

TulipOHare · 27/05/2015 22:33

I've got dark brown eyes and never leave the house without my sunglasses.

As for preference...I love brown eyes most. Before I had children I hoped for lovely little dark-haired, dark-eyed ones. And I got them Grin they are beautiful and actually, in their school, quite unusual.

SumThucker · 27/05/2015 23:14

So brown, green and hazel eyed people will find the title 'racist', will they Elizabeth?

I'm in Sweden at the moment and the men and women are absolutely stunning with their white skin and fair colouring. I definitely find it more attractive than dark eyes and browny black African skin.

Hmm
JumpingJetFlash · 27/05/2015 23:15

I could be wrong but I think it's been proven scientifically that children who are dual heritage have features that are 'more symmetrical' from the mixing of races and that's why they are often considered so attractive.
I have wishy washy blue eyes that are quite frankly crap at working properly (as are my dads and sisters) whereas my brown eyed mother and sister have fabulous eyesight so I'd quite like to steal theirs :-)

Rainbunny · 28/05/2015 05:15

I have green eyes and they are very light sensitive. It was agony doing PE at school on bright grey days (sunny days were more bearable). I distinctly remember the (brown eyed) class bully making jokes about how I must be a secret "chink" because of the way I screwed my eyes up when doing PE.

Anyway, as an adult (who lives in her sunglasses) I love my green eyes. Oh and yes, green is the rarest colour :)

TheNewStatesman · 28/05/2015 05:43

I've heard that blue-eyed people are more prone to hearing loss...

ItsRainingInBaltimore · 28/05/2015 05:44

I am not sure why having blue eyes is a blessing? It's just a colour, it doesn't necessarily mean that you have nice eyes or that you are attractive - it's not that simple. Confused I have never understood the obsession with blonde hair and blue eyes - I really don't think that they alone make anyone more beautiful than the next person. Personally the only eye colour I covet or go gooey over is that beautiful smokey turquoise/jade green that some people have, but it's very unusual and rare - I hardly ever see it.

I think if your eyes are blue or or green and they stand out against your natural skin tone which is on the darker side then that is a beautiful and striking combination. If you have typically fair northern European colouring then I don't think blue eyes stand out or are anything to rave about.

My eyes are extremely sensitive to bright and harsh daylight and they are bog standard brown.

ItsRainingInBaltimore · 28/05/2015 05:47

One of my DSs has really beautiful deep blue eyes the colour of a bright azure summer sky or sea, with lots of sparkly bits like a kaleidoscope. But two of my relatives have very pale wishy washy blue eyes with little variation and the pupil stands out and looks too beady for my liking. So blue doesn't necessarily equal great.

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 28/05/2015 06:00

I've known for years blue eyes are more sensitive, however I think the OPs mistake is to make a generalisation that it apples to every one with blue eyes.

it slightly annoys me that it isn't better known, i know of a group of people all five of them have blue eyes, however two of them never take their sunglasses off, even people who know them think it's because there being divas, it's simply not, they can't see without them and in the summer get awful headaches.

And yes brown eyes can also be sensitive not quite as much as blue eyes I believe, like not all blue eyes are super sensitive not all brown eyes are not.

ItsRainingInBaltimore · 28/05/2015 06:21

Albinos have very light sensitive eyes and tend to wear tinted specs don't they, and they have a total absence of pigment, so I suppose it follows (at least to some small degree) that the less pigment you have the more sensitive your eyes might be.

I have extremely light sensitive eyes but my eyes are a medium depth brown/green. I am fair skinned and prone to freckles though, and I burn easily. One of my DCs is exactly the same colouring as me and is very light sensitive.

Maybe if you are one of those blue eyed people who tans easily and doesn't have freckles, your eyes are not especially sensitive?

Mousefinkle · 28/05/2015 06:41

Green eyes aren't common! I'm the only person I've ever met with green eyes anyway Grin. I love having green eyes personally but I absolutely love dark brown eyes. Hence why DH has them and our DD's do too, they're just lovely. DS otoh has big grey eyes, they're hypnotic.

Anyway... If the colour of your eyes really has anything to do with sun sensitivity (which I doubt) that probably explains why I squint like crazy in any remote sunlight, I guess. DH calls me a vampire Grin.

Charis1 · 28/05/2015 06:48

well, I emailed my cousin last night to ask ( one blue and one brown eye) no difference what so ever in how it feels to use them in sunlight.

I also disagree about blue being a favourite.

ItsRainingInBaltimore · 28/05/2015 07:06

True green eyes are very unusual. Lots of people have olivey or hazelly green / brown though.

I am never quite sure what officially constitutes a hazel eye. Confused

I think people just use it to describe any colour that's an ambiguous mix of something with brown and it is not really a specific colour at all. Grin

My friend has very unusual light golden/amber brown eyes and if anything I would call those hazel. But loads of people say their eyes are hazel and they look nothing at all like hers.

Unescorted · 28/05/2015 07:08

I would have thought with how well the election result was predicted by the pollsters that we might have started disregarding anything they say.

morelikeguidelines · 28/05/2015 07:11

Eye shape is part of whathe makes an individual's eyes beautiful as well as colour. what attracts us is always in the eye (no pun) of the beholder anyway. I quite like dark brown eyes in men for preference, although not a deciding factor for me.

I have dark brown eyes and always wear sunnies.

ItsRainingInBaltimore · 28/05/2015 07:12

I agree it's much more about shape than colour.

FoodPorn · 28/05/2015 07:26

So many people here looking for offence where none is intended. Smile

OP, everyone I know what you mean. I've pale eyes (which my optician said was the cause on my light sensitivity) and can't see a thing without sunglasses.

duckwalk · 28/05/2015 07:48

My eyes are very sensitive to the light. I have absolutely tiny pupils, almost pinpoint, something called Addies Syndrome. My optician says because my pupils are so constricted, normally very little light actually gets in so on a sunny day or under strong artificial light I'm constantly squinting, blinking, eyes watering plus my pupils dilate really slowly and only slightly. Also affects me at night, in dark-ish rooms. So although I believe there's truth in eye colour being a factor, there's also others. Smile

duckwalk · 28/05/2015 07:48

P.s my eyes are dark brown.
