AIBU?

To think blue eyes are both a blessing and a curse

Blessing: Nations and western worlds favourite eye colour. Grin

Curse: I forgot my sunglasses on a day out with dc and I could barely see in the sun. (Probably added about a million wrinkles around the eye Grin).

'Every race has a fantastic feature'? Jesus Christ.
Please name the single fantastic feature shared by every member of a particular race.
DD is mixed white and black (brown eyes, for the record), does that mean she gets two?

Diamond I'm sorry to say I don't know, but that sounds plausible. I was thinking of the emigration of people from the Caribbean to the UK in the 50s, but I didn't think about where their ancestors had originated from before that.

I thought that black people in the Caribbean were descended from African slaves.

OP - YABU

What a dumbass thread. 'Nations favourite?!' I clearly wasn't asked! Not that it matters but I love all eye colours as long if they're strong and deep. I find blue eyes can get a bit pale and murky as people age but a rare Paul Newman strong blue is stunning A dark brown like Penelope Cruz is also stunning.

I think that Disney and Hollywood have conditioned many people with regards to current beauty standards. I wonder if the eventual domination of China will mean that many people start believing poker straight black hair, brown eyes and petite frame are the most beautiful? Beauty standards shift all the time. Being fat with a big forehead used to be highly attractive!

YABU and open to being interpreted as racist

I am really offended by being called racist, that's a harmful label to throw about.

The western world does value blonde hair blue eyes highly. But it also values many other things that are inclusive of all races.

I'm right in that every race has a feature that is considered attractive.

mami that seems to be one of the current trends at the moment amongst a certain part of society.

But if you look at cosmetics and the beauty industry within the ethnic communities you can find skin lightening cream, contact lenses (my sister had a grey pair) and there was a brief vogue for blonde highlights.

I think because racial tensions and the memory of slavery isn't as prominent in the UK Black Britons are more relaxed with their identity. Particularly as many have family who moved over for work in the 50s, as you say, from British colonies so are more likely to have British identity.

Apologises for the little detour from
The OP!

Wow about blonde hair blue eyes, thats actually pretty horrible. I value my brown haired, dark eyed children, one has blue eyes.... Nothing anymore special.Hmm

Ds and i have chocolate brown eyes and dd and dh have blue/grey with a light brown ring. Dd has very sensitive eyes, which the optician commented on, but dh doesnt seem to have any problems.

The western world does value blonde hair blue eyes highly

Could you think for two minutes about why?

But it also values many other things that are inclusive of all races

You mean being skinny? Big tits? That's not really relevant to a discussion about racial characteristics but it is problematic all by itself.

I'm right in that every race has a feature that is considered attractive

1- every 'race' has huge variations in features. How can you make such a statement?
2- what is considered attractive is hardly universal is it?

I think it's really stunning when you see features that differ from mainstream. Here ATM its Thick black eyebrows like Cara.

You can't post something "light-hearted" about blue eyes being best and then act surprised when people call you out as being racist.

People with blue eyes are at an increased risk of cataracts

Report
LittleBearPad · 27/05/2015 20:31

But thick black eyebrows aren't a racial characteristic. They're just a fashion that cuts down the tweezering time.

I find it interesting we're conditioned to find mixed raced children so attractive. Wonder if it's some primeval way of ensuring the gene pool is widened.

No kidding about beauty standards shifting all the time. I should have been born in the 16th century. Reubens would have loved me Grin

I have always believed the same as the OP about light sensitivity - I've dark brown eyes and never wear sunglasses - can't bear them, actually - and DH with his light blue eyes wears his sunglasses even on cloudy days. I always thought it was because of our respective eye colours but am willing to stand corrected.

In Canada, we don't call black people African-Canadians, we just call them black. Or just people. Canada is such a multicultural melting pot that you really and truly stop noticing colour / race / ethnicity after a while. When I go back to Canada for a visit and then come back to England, even London, I am always taken aback a bit at how homogeneous it is.

I'm the very blue eyed daughter of an optician. He has always made me wear quality sunglasses even to the point of tinting my swimming goggles to protect my eyes and prevent cataracts. DH has deep brown eyes, DC1 green, DC2 hazel.

I've got dark brown eyes and can't go out during the day abroad without sunglasses.

I should clarify I am talking more about big-city Canada rather than rural areas though.

I hadn't realized that there was a spokesperson for the entirety of the Western World. An unelected, unknown, anonymous one offering suspect opinions preferred up as fact for discussion on mumsnet.

You don't speak for me OP, and I live firmly in the western world.

What utter bollocks. Sometimes, I swear, this place is batshit crazy.

I know a lot of men who don't like blondes due to the bimbo association (just as bad as any other discrimination but still. I am blonde btw)
