To think blue eyes are both a blessing and a curse

Blessing: Nations and western worlds favourite eye colour. Grin

Curse: I forgot my sunglasses on a day out with dc and I could barely see in the sun. (Probably added about a million wrinkles around the eye Grin).

I don't think brown eyes are that common either. I have two children with dark brown eyes but most of the eyes I see that I take notice of seem to be hazel.

I can't even work out what colour my husbands are really. Sometimes they look green, sometimes blue and other times grey.

I'm really sensitive to light, and my eyes are hazely-green.

DS1 has the brown eyes. Very dark brown. My other DC have blue eyes (DD's eyes are so pale blue they are almost gray. I think I prefer brown eyes, but blue eyes are better than murky like DH and I.

There is some truth to it. Although all irises filter light in the same way, unless you have albinism, then they let light straight through, people with light blue eyes and pale skin and hair also have paler retinas. It's the retina that is sensitive to light, not the iris!

It's bone structure that makes you good looking imo.

An ugly bllonde man or woman is still ugly. (not that they're obliged to be handsome or beautiful of course)

The title and the subject of the OP are a little 'out of nowhere' though.... Confused

Of course we can say black.
I suppose it is believable that dark brown eyes would be less sensitive to the light, because broadly speaking they are more likely to be found on people with darker skin, ie those who live (or lived ) nearer the equator.
What is more attractive is a matter of opinion. Personally I find very dark brown eyes the most beautiful. I find very light coloured eyes a bit spooky. I have dark bluey green eyes myself. I don't go round thinking about it much though, they're just eyes.

Ehric so etnic minorities can share their races distinctive features as a good thing but white people can't. That's racist to me.

Enormous I respect that, however that is not really white people fault.

I happen to think every race has a fantastic feature.

I thought we'd agreed, about 70 years ago now, that fetishising one eye colour or hair colour over another was generally not an advisable thing.

Yes. I've particularly noticed that the fetishisation of blonde hair has completely disappeared.

Agree eyes/hair don't make a person good looking.

According to google, 48% of the UK has blue eyes, 30% green and 22% brown, so brown are by far the rarest.

I agree with what a pp said though, I think 'true' blue eyes are pretty rare. Most blue that I see are blue/grey or blue/green. Me, DH and ds1 have green eyes. Ds2 is the only person I know with what I'd call 'true' blue eyes.

Honest to god how is liking blue eyes in any way racist

I have a mixed race child with big curly hair, I've had a friend say to me 'do you not think people are fetishising her' when they comment on her fabulous hair. Fetishising Ffs! No they're admiring a feature ! I see it as the same as someone saying my white dd has gorgeous blue eyes.
Neither is racist, you just can't bloody win!

And how is saying 'blue eyes is a blessing and a curse' 'out there' ?

You realise not only white people can have blue eyes?

Why do some members of Mumsnet have to turn everything on race.

Right……I don't even know how to respond to that Lewisham.

I wasn't blaming white people, I was just making a point regarding western ideals of beauty. I thought that was obvious.

lewisham I agree. I feel like saying 'sorry for existing' after reading this thread with my BLUE eyes!

I think the over sensitivity to anything to do with race actually contributes to racist attitudes

lewishamsally what do you mean 'every race has a fantastic feature' ? Every race has diversity, not to mention how many of us are of mixed race to some degree.

It's not racist to like blue eyes Hmm however saying that he eyes are a blessing because the western world values them more highly is....well, racist. There's no other way to put it.

Enormouse do you not find that a society's idea of beauty often is just what is slightly unusual or opposite to the norm, for example the obsession with tanning- very deep tans and fake tan, darkened eyebrows with younger girls in this country.

EhricLovesTheBhrothers · 27/05/2015 20:11

Why do those of us with blue eyes have to apologise for existing? You've completely missed the point.
