to call someone about the car parked outside my house?

A car has been parked outside my house for over three weeks, one of the tyres is looking a bit soft now and it hasn't moved an inch. I'm starting to wonder if it's been abandoned.

I want to report it but presume IABU to call the police.

Call 101. If it's been abandoned then in needs to be dealt with. The police will know the correct procedure for this.

You can probably report it online to the police or council

Thank you - I have emailed the council. when I searched 101 it said abandoned vehicles should be reported to the council not the police. Weird.

I suspect it's been parked there to avoid someone checking if it has tax because we are a dead end street so have no passing traffic.

Report it. It might have been stolen and the poor owner is unaware of its location x

I hope you're not in Devon?

We only keep a car for long distance journeys, so it can be left parked in one place for a few weeks between uses. When I checked the tyre pressure, just before the last drive about three weeks ago one of the tyres was quite soft...

I'd be deadly annoyed if it was towed away as abandoned as I'm planning on driving about 550 miles in it tomorrow!

tiggy is right, we had one parked on the main road that caused a nightmare at rush hour, but there were no double yellow lines, it was a brand new car and fully taxed. The police put a notice on it in the end to stop people ringing up. it was picked up after about 5 weeks!
We also had a knackered car left on our road for 2 weeks but it dissapeared over night in the end.

We live near an airport so it happens quite a lot round here.

I might call 101 just in case it had been stolen and dumped. I'd give them the info and then forget about it.

Well I know IABU but I would be a bit naffed off if someone chose to leave their car outside my house for upwards of 3 weeks knittingdad.

We had this too, and contacted the council after about 6 weeks. They came out and looked at it almost straight away, and tried to find the lenders bit couldn't, so they waited until the tax was one month out of date, then the DVLA came out and clamped it - then they removed it the next day, much to my DS's great delight! It was there about 4 months in total

Fudgeface123 - You would be more naffed off if I parked it outside the house I'm living in as, because of the narrowness of the road, the way it bends and the presence of my landlady's car, I would block the road entirely and you'd not make it to your house at all...

... but I don't expect that's much comfort.

No - it's not in Devon. It's in a dead end street outside my terraced house and doesn't belong to anyone who lives here as far as I know. There is a possibility that someone has left it here while they go on holiday - the people across the road have been away for some time so perhaps they have gone with them and will be picking their car up when they return.

Incidentally (And this is colouring my view somewhat) the people across the road have a very territorial attitude to the residents parking space right outside their house, sometimes blocking it with bricks or standing by their door and telling people who have permits not to park there.

If it turns out that they have stuck a friend's car right outside my house for four weeks while they go on holiday then it'll just confirm that they are knobs.

If it has valid tax and not in a dangerous position then there is nothing you can do about it. My mother in law went to australia for 2 months and parked her taxi legally accross the road from her house as usual (she doesn't have a drive way and there is no parking on her side of the street). Whilst she was away the house opposite was put up for sale and although they had had viewings they didnt get any offers. The owners convinced themselves that it was because the taxi was parked in front of their house and so they thought making their front room more dark and so they tried to get the mother in law's taxi towed away. I was checking on the house one day and noticed a few people standing around the taxi and talking, I went over and asked if everything was ok, explained who i was and they told me the situation. I got a bit of abuse about the car being there. The council officer who was there said there is no need to move it if I didn't want to and in fact if I was not insured to drive it I couldn't move it anyway. I considered leaving it where it was because the owners of the house were being so rude about the situation but to be neighbourly and so as not to risk damage to the car I did move it as I am insured. However a simple note explaining the situation through my mother in law's door would have surficed to get the same result and no agro. I would suggest the OP put a note through a few doors and see what response comes back.

I had this once. It was most inconvenient as my dd is disabled. Like yours it had a short amount of tax remaining.

Anyway, completely coincidentally I was checking my own vehicle's insurance status on ASKMID and like a dolt, looked out of the window and entered this car's registration, totally by mistake. Blow me when I discover it's NOT INSURED! So I rang the police and told them about the car, and that I suspected it was uninsured and bugger me if they didn't come and impound it pretty much immediately.

I think it's a bit mean to leave your car parked outside someone's house for weeks on end knitteddad. I know it's not illegal, but it's a bit inconsiderate.

We are in this situation at the moment. The car is taxed and legally parked on the public highway so I'm assuming there's nothing we can do. At this stage I'm sort of thinking it belongs to someone who has gone on a long-ish holiday. Not sure how long to leave it before reporting it to someone I don't know who.

Completely selfish to leave a car outside someones house for weeks. It may be legal but it's not considerate.

A disabled neighbour had a car parked up to his disabled space so he couldn't use it. We called the police and they got the owner to move it. The owner was on holiday but his Dad came and moved it. They told the Dad to tell his son to be more considerate of others.

I had one parked outside my house when I came back from holiday last year. Ignored it and a few days later the police were knocking on the door asking if I'd seen anyone in it. It'd been stolen.

chaletdays - If there is nowhere else to park then it cannot be unreasonable to park there, people do not own the piece of road outside their house. If you live on a road with no driveways then this is something you just have to accept can happen. I used to live on a road like this and just accepted it - in fact i currently live in a property with no immediate road access and accept that i will have to park infront of someone elses house up the road, its my choice. People who put cones, bins, bricks etc out in the road to save 'their' space are being more unreasonable in my view.

ButterflyUpSoHigh - disabled spaces are different entirely. People do not have a right to park outside their house.
