Aibu to expect at least a show after a sweep?

I'm impatient now - had a sweep a couple of days ago and nothing. It's not going to happen, is it? I thought that there might at least be a show, but no. Nothing.

I'm 40+4 with DC2 and I look like Mr Greedy, but with boobs.

That baby will come when it's good and ready.
I totally sympathise ds1 was 40+13! We tried everything....-and I mean everything Wink

dsg222 · 20/05/2015 13:30

I remember your pain well! Three sweeps later and ds still only appeared when he was good and ready

OhHolyFuck · 20/05/2015 13:49

Yea, sweeps never did much for me either, took the pig seman drugs to get ds1 moving

WannabeLaraCroft · 20/05/2015 13:50

Ugh I remember going for my sweep, all excited afterwards thinking, "this is it! Any time now!"

It took another 5 days for DS to come.

Good luck! And I'm sure you don't look like Mr Greedy Smile

HoggleHoggle · 20/05/2015 13:52

I felt like you but late eve on the second day after sweep, contractions did indeed start! I was 40+6, it was the week before Christmas, and I was starting to lose my mind.

IggyStrop · 20/05/2015 14:54

Sweeps are a waste of time, I don't think there is any evidence they work, is there? I had my second baby outside the UK, my ob-gyn had never even heard of the practice!

Discopanda · 20/05/2015 14:58

The dr at my hospital said they only work on 1 in 7 women, babies come when they're good and ready

Happybodybunny12 · 20/05/2015 15:02

Total and utter waste of time op.

Hot curry and sex. Not necessarily in that order.Grin

My df 38 weeks is going for a sweep on Tuesday and told her complete waste of time but she's been offered it by her doctor.

They really should stop this no evidence based bollocks here.

Imnotaslimjim · 20/05/2015 15:05

Apparently nipple tweaking helps release the hormone needed to kickstart labour, though I don't how effective it is (I went into labour overnight at 40+5)

Baby will come when they're ready though

BreeVDKamp · 20/05/2015 15:07

I feel your pain, I had a sweep yesterday at 40+5 and nothing has happened either! Other than blood at the time. Another one on Friday then induction on Tuesday!

Icimoi · 20/05/2015 16:03

Sweeps are a relatively recent thing, aren't they? In the past if a baby was overdue they'd just leave it alone until it got too overdue, when they'd go for breaking the waters and drugs to induce labour.

NaiceNickname · 20/05/2015 16:08

I had a sweep at around the same time, did feck all. Ended up going into slow labour naturally on the day I was due to get induced (again) and an old shovel handed midwife gave me another sweep and I didn't need the induction after all. Straight into 3 mins apart contractions as soon as I stood up.

One thing I regret is not getting enough rest, I was constantly bombing it around looking after DD and doing everything I could to get him out and with hindsight I should have just done nothing but eat and sleep.

Hope you aren't waiting much longer, good luck Smile

WoonerismSpit · 20/05/2015 16:09

Not really on topic, but I hope it will make you smile.

A friend of DGM packed her case, and took herself to the hospital on her due date. She was most put out to realise that the EDD was just an estimate, and not the day the baby would definitely arrive!

I went 40+8 and I hated it (I cried on my due date Blush) it won't be long now...enjoy the relative peace whilst you can Flowers

The sweep worked for my second and third babies. No show either time though. With my fourth, the first sweep did nothing then the second sweep kind of started a long, slow stop-start process that lasted all weekend, involving being 5cm dilated for days.

littlejohnnydory · 20/05/2015 18:09

I didn't find them painful either.

AoifeBell · 20/05/2015 18:10

YABU. I had three of the fuckers and nothing happened!! I was 40+14!!

Ended up induced with a back to back baby. She's lucky she's cute Grin

Silvercatowner · 20/05/2015 18:12

It depends whether the cervix has softened and is ready to labour. If it is then sweeps tend to be more effective (and less painful). My sweep seemingly worked - but I was a week over so who knows.

PollyIndia · 20/05/2015 18:57

I had my first sweep at 40+12 done by the consultant who stretched my cervix from 1 to 3 cms and said he betted I'd go into labour the next day. i did and DS was born on 40+14. That amount of time overdue, maybe he was always going to come then, and clearly my cervix was ready, but I maintain the sweep just tipped me over the edge. It was my only option other than induction so had nothing to lose.

PollyIndia · 20/05/2015 18:58

Oh, and it was VERY painful. Thank god for hypnobirthing breathing!

tilliebob · 20/05/2015 18:59

I was determined with dc3 there would be no sweeps. However I had one at 40+8 which is another story, but dc3 still didn't appear until 40+11. All I had after the sweep was a tantrum and a fallout with DH!

chickenfuckingpox · 20/05/2015 20:44

sweep worked for my middle child they work between 12-48 hours 2-4 hours later i was in labor they did still have to break my waters but that was because the sack (whatever its called) was so thick it would never had gone by itself!

anything after 48 hours has not worked

cogitosum · 20/05/2015 20:45

I had 2 sweeps.

Ds came at 40+15

I remain unconvinced!

MagicMojito · 20/05/2015 21:06

IMO sweeps are useless. I had 2 with dd2 and I still ended up bring induced 14 days overdue!

Baby will either come when s/he's ready or you'll have to force the bugger out via induction.

FlowersCakeBrew for you OP. This was the worst bit for me, so sympathies x
