To treat my family out of a lottery win.

Songlark · 20/05/2015 10:59

I haven't won yet, probably never will but DH and I were discussing who we would treat if we won a few million. He wants to treat all his large family(6 siblings) fair enough even though 2 of them have never really been part of our lives (they'd snub you if they saw you in the street. So I said "and of course I'd treat my brother" (who's loaded but wouldn't snub you in the street, but disinterested in our family) DH thinks my DB shouldn't be treated because he's rich. But I don't see how you can pick and choose. I say just treat the lot of them and then it's fair. Which got me thinking. Who would you all treat or not treat if you won the lottery?

Well when me and DH have these trivial conversations no one else hears us Compos

There is no angst, it's only a daydream and Compos it's never going to happen for most people! I agree thought that the subject of friends would be much trickier (for me) than family. I do think huge amounts of money could be devastating to friendships.

I have a small family and my sister and I get on like a house on fire so would give her heaps.

DC's an amount in trust.

Loads to charity and would thoroughly thoroughly enjoying choosing which ones and distributing it. Lots of smaller amounts to quite a few charities so that lots benefit rather than one big lump to a single charity. That must be a great feeling Smile

saresywaresy2 · 20/05/2015 13:54

I think some of you should stop playing it if you can't agree already what you're going to do with your winnings!
If I won a million I'd give our three siblings 100k each. I'd pay our mortgage off which is about 100k, then i'd buy both our kids a house for about 200k which we'd then rent out until they were old enough. With the rent my husband would be able to work part time or be at sahp, and after having a year of cancer treatment, that would be fantastic. No worries. That's what I'd like. I don't know what we'd do about friends though. It's quite hard really when you get into the nitty gritty....maybe we'd need 2 million :-)

ebwy · 20/05/2015 13:59

I used to think I'd pay off my mother's morgage and my brother's...

but since my mother and brother (in their houses with spare rooms) didn't even offer me a week in their spare rooms when I was made homeless with a newborn baby, no.

So these days I'd pay off our morgage, buy a decent house in Ceredigion (make it much easier for my kids to speak Welsh living there), buy a small house for the eldest 2's father to rent (optionally, he wouldn't have to, of course) and think "stuff you!" to anyone who came to me with hands out for a share.

Oh and I'd offer to get a reliable second hand car for my goddaughter to learn to drive in and pay for lessons for up to a year for her.

The rest would sit in the bank (after a few charity donations, obviously) to be used as needed.

AGnu · 20/05/2015 14:01

I have a very elaborate plan. I wouldn't want anyone to know I'd won the lottery so I'd get a solicitor to send an envelope to my parents' house which would contain cheques for me, my siblings & my parents. I'd also give some money to some family friends who've had a really tough time. DH's family probably wouldn't get anything - his parents are well off & his DBro lives alone & enjoys a fairly comfortable lifestyle. My family aren't so lucky.

The rest of the money would be spent on tutors for our HE children for any subjects I struggle with & then anything left over would be saved for the DC's future or given to charities as & when we saw fit. The money from our "anonymous" cheque would be spent on a nicer house, maybe a second car, & visits to family abroad. I'd make sure that my siblings received enough money that our expenditure wouldn't seem suspicious.

If we won a large sum then I'd try to persuade DH to give up his job. I wouldn't succeed.

I should probably start playing the lottery... Wink

WyrdByrd · 20/05/2015 15:11

I would divide anything 4 ways - his, mine, ours & DDs.

The ours would be used for anything household, car or holiday related, and we could treat whoever we wanted to out of our individual share.

Just need that winning ticket now!

FlabulousChix · 20/05/2015 15:19

No one. I'd split it 3 ways me and my kids and that's it

2rebecca · 20/05/2015 16:34

I'm comfortably off and think suddenly coming in to a large amount of money would be quite stressful which is 1 reason I don't do the lottery (and preferring to hang on to what I do have). Up to a million is fine, any more and it just gets too complex and life changing.
I don't want my life to change that much. Different if you're skint.

PatricianOfAnkhMorpork · 20/05/2015 17:09

I've had this conversation so many times over the years!

If we are talking a standard Lotto (couple of million) then the only people we would see right are my parents and his sister. Frankly a couple of mil doesn't go very far when the type of house we want in our area is going to cost us over £1m (poxy south east/London).

If we are talking Euromillions rollover territory, then my DBs and our closest friends would get some as well. Most of it would be squirreled away as we've probably got another 40 years of living to do. I would look at setting up a charity fund though where smaller community charities can apply for funding, its the type of thing where less than £50k has a huge impact for them. The big charities can fuck off though.

I would have anybody that we were giving money to sign a non-disclosure agreement to force them not to blab!

KimCarCrashAVan · 20/05/2015 17:11

AGnu I like your plan but I wonder if it would look like dodgey money. Drugs money or something similar.

I might have been watching too much Breaking Bad and I nay be overthinking this. Wink

AGnu · 20/05/2015 18:19

Kim it would have a nice cover letter explaining that the giver has recently inherited a very large sum of money which they would like to share but wishes to remain anonymous.

My plan would probably be more effective if I hadn't already told everyone about it!

VoldemortsNipple · 20/05/2015 18:27

I like to dream big so this is my 80m dream.

I would wait a few weeks before telling anybody and then say I'd won around £20m. That way they would appreciate everything they get and think I'm really generous. I would arrange a family party and announce it to everybody together and let everybody know what they are getting which would be the same for siblings on both sides, nieces and nephews etc. each sibling would have up to £250k for a new house or pay off their mortgage and renovate. They would also have £1m each to do as they wish. Grown up nieces and nephews would also be bought a house which would be in my name. I would pay for driving lessons and a car too. I would also give them money to set up their own business or pay uni fees. I don't want my dcs to grow up thinking they don't have to contribute to society. So I'm not going to fund others to have that lifestyle. Once they have shown that they have made a successful career, I would sign the house over to them. I'd do the same for younger children when they were old enough and also my own dcs. Although my own dcs would get an allowance too.

There are a few others that I would like to help too by paying off mortgages or buying houses. I'd donate money to the nursery/school where I work for a new outdoor area and resources. And I'd set up a fund in the school to help disadvantaged families. I wouldn't give a big lump sum out to any particular charity but would help various ones at different times.

I would love to buy a big house with a smaller building which could be converted into a self contained bungalow. The bungalow would be used by the dcs for the next few years so they can learn to live independently before getting their own house. Then when my mum gets a bit older, she can live there for as long as she can be independent with me close by to support her.
later along the line, I might give extended family another bonus or pay for holidays etc but at first, I'd just enjoy not being skint Grin

TrulyTurtles · 20/05/2015 18:35

All dc would get a house and half a mil.My dsis s would get some as would BILs. Nephews and nieces a little bit. (Youngest ones in trust so their "lovely" dms can't get their mits on it) I'd deliver the money to dsis in Australia in person as a huge surprise. Whilst away house totally renovated for dis to live in when she comes over, whilst we buy a big fuck off house.
I would not tell anyone how much I'd won.

VoldemortsNipple · 20/05/2015 18:49

I love the idea of surprising your dsis Truly

lurkerspeaks · 20/05/2015 19:39

I would buy a 2bed flat for me. I'm currently stuck in the London property market awfulness. That would be about a million.

After that the rest could go to siblings and charity.

I would still work as I love my job!

grapejuicerocks · 20/05/2015 19:43

See I would invest all my winnings and then live off the interest and help family with my interest too. I would try not to touch the capital except for possibly a decent house for ourselves. Investing could include buying lots of btls which would generate income which I could then help our family/charities with. I would get a decent financial planner to help maximise the income.

If it was really silly money then both sets of parents and both mine and dhs's sibling would get a decent equal whack. And the dc's too. It wouldn't cause any angst as we get on well with everyone.

YouCanButImNot · 20/05/2015 19:49

If we won millions I'd pay off our mortgage and clear all debts then buy my mum and dad a house as they've fallen on hard times and I'd give them enough to retire on. Would probably give my siblings 50k each and put 50k in trust for each of their children. Then the remainder we would keep half to live on and half in trust for our daughter. We've discussed this at length! We wouldn't tell the in laws, they're all very well off!!

nokidshere · 20/05/2015 20:54

Oh I need the euro millions rollover sums lol

I would give all my 6 siblings 1 million each and a house of their choice. I would give all of my 19 nieces/nephews and great nieces/nephews 500k each and I would pay off the mortgages and/or debts if my closest friends and give them a lump sum so they didn't have to work - no point living a life of luxury on your own lol

NoArmaniNoPunani · 20/05/2015 20:58

This thread reminds me of the massive row DH and I had over our action plan for a zombie apocalypse. I daren't mention a hypothetical lottery win.

foreverton · 20/05/2015 21:01

Before I left home, our next door neighbours won 2 million on the lottery about 15 years ago.
They gave one sibling their very nice 4 bed detached house and moved to a naice posh area.
Apparently they didn't share the money equally with other siblings/ family members and most of them fell out:(

I've got mine all worked out, I dreamt my numbers and am waiting...
My dad says that I'm the only person he knows who is utterly convinced they're going to win:)

Mousefinkle · 20/05/2015 22:15

I always said I'd buy my mum a house and pay off my grandmas mortgage, I'd also take my grandma to Kenya because she's always dreamed of going. DH would pay for his mum and brother to move here (they're from SA) and pay off his mum's debts too. In a dream world I'd book a big family holiday with our mothers, brothers and my grandma but it probably wouldn't work very well Grin.

We'd pay off our debts, obviously buy our own home, new car and go travelling for at least a year. And give some token amount to charidee because I'm not totally selfish Wink.

Kiwiinkits · 21/05/2015 01:03

I'd pay off all debts, then host two huge family holidays (one for each side of the family) then take a whole year off to live in a village in France with my DH and kids. One with a pool, close to a boulangerie.

in my dreams

GatoradeMeBitch · 21/05/2015 01:18

I'm from a massive family and I would have to win a lot of money to be able to treat everyone adequately, only counting parents, siblings, their kids, and aunts, uncles and cousins I would have over 100 people to consider. And they all fall out over nothing. I don't know why I buy lottery tickets actually, I bet a win would turn out to be a nightmare!

tilliebob · 21/05/2015 06:41

My SIL is loaded well her twatty DH is and is nc so she'd be getting nothing. We'd pay both our dbs mortgages off. Parents don't need any money. I'd love to win a shedload and be able to pay all my mates mortgages off - like me they would all be able to tell work to shove it if they didn't have the mortgage to pay.

I'd also take my workmates off to Gleneagles or somewhere for a fab weekend. Just take over the whole place and have a ball.

I'd give a stack to charities close to my heart too. I often dream about wining a fortune and all the people I could help. If only....

Friday99 · 21/05/2015 11:40

"take a whole year off to live in a village in France with my DH and kids. One with a pool, close to a boulangerie."

that sounds AMAZING, I am stealing your dream.
