Either the actual lottery or scratch cards etc? Love hearing these stories.

My MIL worked with a woman who won 4 million on the lottery with her partner. His exwife got some of it because they were still married.
They both left work, bought a big house far away from their friends and no one sees them any more, MIL reckons they're not happy.
A man in my church owned a farm and some of the land was rezoned for commercial use and he sold a tiny corner of a field for 2 million. That's winning the lottery IMO.
He's been very generous with the money. He bought house for all his children and a few other houses which he rents out at very reasonable rates to newly weds or families who are students or to other worthy causes, to give them a start. He's a total gem.

Yes, a friend won £60,000 on a scratch-card - christmas week! He was broke at the time, too, and really couldn't have happened to a lovelier person.

Not over £50,000 but my son's friend bought his brother a scratch-card for a birthday present. He won £500!

Panicmode1 · 19/05/2015 11:15

A friend of my brother won several million when they were at uni - she dropped out, bought a gorgeous farmhouse and is now happily married with lots of children and animals. She's such a lovely person so can't feel green!

An ex colleague of mine's father won £5million and gave each of his four children £1m and kept one for himself!

And my parents won £120k on the pools almost 15 years ago which was the jackpot that week ....they were a bit upset because the following week it was over £2million! But as they aren't really in need of any more money they were fairly philosophical.

My AWFUL luck was that I bought paper tickets for a Wednesday and a Saturday draw - both lucky dips. When I checked the numbers for the Wednesday, I had all of them....except I was checking against my Saturday ticket......so I don't think I will ever get that close again and only buy tickets very rarely now.

The neighbours of my parents were bought their house (£250k) when a sibling won the lottery. They were also given £100k.

They managed to fritter away the £100k in around 3 year. In another few years, they had double mortgaged the house and it was eventually repossessed. They didn't live a lavish lifestyle - it went on takeaways, booze, and their inability to clean anything, which meant that they periodically hired skips and literally threw away everything they owned, to buy the same things all over again in slightly newer models.

I would feel sorry for them but they were the worst neighbours ever - loud, obnoxious, inconsiderate, incredibly cruel to animals (most of which had to be rescued by my sister). Their kids were awful and brought huge gangs of teenagers into the area, who stole things out of sheds and vandalised houses. My parents (who are the very opposite) were so upset by their behaviour and so glad when they moved out.

Was merrily chatting to my midwife the other when she casually said "I won £1million on the lottery" - hasn't given up work, bought a house and moved her daughter to private school, lovely lady.
I used to work for a bank, we had a lottery winner who hadn't told his family!!!

ninetynineonehundred · 19/05/2015 11:31

After tomorrow you will all be able to claim this because I intend to win Wink

ApprenticeViper · 19/05/2015 11:43

A friend of a friend won £4 million in the late 1990s. I've only met her a handful of times, but she always seems really wary and cagey, like she's expecting to be asked for something. Having said that, I didn't meet her until after her win, so she might always have been like that, I don't know Smile

PanGalaticGargleBlaster · 19/05/2015 11:48

An old school friend won 100,000 on a scratchcard, went travelling for a couple of years and spent the whole lot, he does not regret it one bit.

MalletsMallet · 19/05/2015 11:52

A woman I used to work with won the lottery jackpot but so did a lot of other people that week so she ended up with 500k.

She paid off her mortgage on her ex council house then rented it out, bought a beautiful detached house complete with pool room/bar and self contained studio flat in the basement, bought a holiday home in Spain and another ex council house for her two sons to live in.

She was the nastiest person you could ever meet, once declaring "I hate my sons, they've ruined my life" in front of quite a few of us at work Sad (they were young boys at the time)

She still works though and I guess all her money is tied up in property.

DextersMistress · 19/05/2015 11:53

Yep, £1m. They were the tightest couple I've ever met, went on and on about how they were millionaires before anyway and were generally boasty and unpleasant.

Dp and I went to their apartment (we lived abroad) because Dp was doing a job for them. The woman sat showing me photos of their house back home while the 72 year old man painted the living room because he didn't want to pay anyone. They haggled the already low price with my Dp for the job.

I picked their daughter and grandchildren up from the airport (as a favour) and they complained the whole way about my car being too small and how they only trust 4x4's.

Awful people!

Jen1610 · 19/05/2015 12:01

Yeah I know someone who won 1.8 million. She is so lovely and they had been really struggling. Other than close family they didn't tell anyone for months but then her husband's boss told everyone when he found out. They have used the money to build businesses and both work very hard she's probably on here actually and this will out me.

My brothers friends mum won 50k on a scratch card she bought from the shop she worked in.

My Dads ex partner won 12k on the lottery when it was just out, 20 years ago??

And my step aunt won it with all her workmates as they pooled in for a syndicate, they got tens of thousands each, can't remember exact amount.

My cousin won 10k on postcode lottery two xmases ago.

PottyLotty · 19/05/2015 12:05

My neighbour of 20 years won 7.4 million. They used to be a really lovely couple until they won then managed to offend every person who had been friends with them by shouting drunk in the street that they haven't got any real friends and everyone only talks to them because they are rich Hmm.

Shame that the cats can't feed themselves and their plants can't water themselves really. It would have saved them having to beg for 'us scroungers who are after their money' to look after their pets while they go off on their cruises.

I really don't understand why they ended up like that. They were such a nice couple who you could pop round and have a cup of tea with and take shopping with me. I even mowed their lawn so they didn't have to struggle (they are elderly and struggle with things like that).

ThisTimeIAmMagic · 19/05/2015 14:51

I don't know anyone but DH's family know two winners, both got millions. One invested it wisely, the other invested loads in property right before the crash and lost everything but the family home.

wink1970 · 19/05/2015 15:40

my Nan won £3.6million back in the first couple of years. She banked £1m and shared the rest amongst her 6 children (including my dad).

The win turned a nice lower-middle-class family into a bunch of infighting, nasty backstabbers, including her.

I remember how she rang the newly-bereaved widow of one of the sons a few years later saying she aught not to expect any more "payouts". My Dad fell out with my Mum (they were divorced already but had remained friends) over my wedding - he sent a solicitors letter warning her not to ask him for money, even though she had made it clear she and I were funding it all. That particular bridge, between my Dad and myself, is only just mended 14 years on. There are a few more examples, too soul-destroying to mention; none of the 5 remaining children talk any more.

WhiteConverseSkinnyJeans · 19/05/2015 16:10

yes I sometimes work for a young couple who won about 4 million on the lottery

they are lovely and so down to earth, you would never know

Icrackedup · 19/05/2015 16:20

My dad won just over 2 million in November or December last year. He was very cagey about the date so that we don't find out exactly how much he won. Anyway, he fucked off to New Zealand at New Year to live out the rest of his life and I haven't heard from him since.

He paid off his brother's mortgage and that's about it really. Its left my son devastated because he spent a lot of time with my dad and he'd built up a solid routine (my son has Autism).

NKfell · 19/05/2015 16:23

DP filled out a "Win a brand new bike" competition when buying a motorbike...Won another bike! Then the jammy git did it again a couple of years ago!

Notso · 19/05/2015 16:29

One we know has won just over £50k twice, my Mum is friends with a couple who won almost 5 million.

LikeABadSethRogenMovie · 19/05/2015 16:42

I have a feeling one of our friends has. There was a big win where a legal team claimed the prize (not UK) and there was a lot of buzz as to who won. Fast forward a year, they suddenly moved to a huge house, put their kids into private schools, bought new cars and their holiday budget appears to have quadrupled overnight.

The one time I made a joke about them clearly winning the lottery, I got a bit of a po face back so haven't mentioned it again!

CPtart · 19/05/2015 20:42

Our syndicate at work won £20k last year, about £1k each. Not millions maybe, but we were all thrilled.

Snowballschanceinhell · 19/05/2015 20:50

My Mum is quite good friends with a guy who won just over £1m on the lottery. He checked his numbers and thought he'd won £3 so chucked it away, realised he didn't have any change for a packet of fags so fished it out of the bin and was told he'd won the jackpot.

Mum was pleased for him, he deserved it and was a great guy.

The lucky fucker went and won it again two months ago. Odds of that were 283 BILLION to 1.

TalkinPeace · 19/05/2015 21:27

I know a family who won it twice - over £1m each time
they had to move abroad because of the hassle from people
but they are happy - see them on FB

PeppermintCrayon · 19/05/2015 22:21

Twice? Why would you keep entering after winning once?!

TalkinPeace · 19/05/2015 22:42

their family and friends did so they did

they carried on after the second win too

springsprang · 20/05/2015 09:46

I know two people that had 5 numbers and bonus - one won about £75K, the other £600K.
