Either the actual lottery or scratch cards etc? Love hearing these stories.

Yay callme!

There is a MNetter who won a lot on the lottery (millions) I can't remember her nickname but she posted about it on one of these threads before. Said people definitely changed towards her. Sad

Daimgirl · 18/05/2015 20:41

Someone I went to school with won £7+ million.
They started their own business employed all the family having gifted them all a arge amount.

They were/are a lovely family and always worked hard and did a lot for the local community. And the money didn't change them a bit.

DragonWithAGirlTattoo · 18/05/2015 20:47

a bird shat on me today... i have bought tickets!

JoanHickson · 18/05/2015 20:48

How much are you expected to give to family? Confused clearly £80,000 isn't considered enough.

I don't know anyone. Someone who did said they were sorry they had as the gifts to relatives were not considered enough. Shock

honeyroar · 18/05/2015 20:52

I'd be over the moon if my family member gave me £80k of their lottery win, it would change a lot for us, surely it would for anyone. Nobody has to give money to family. They should have been thankful.

I have a friend who won £300k. Paid their mortgage off, bought nice cars and a small flat to let out, was able to go part time at work. Unfortunately her husband ran of with someone a couple of years later and got half.

JoanHickson · 18/05/2015 21:03

Those pesky cheats.Sad

Someone on the first page said they thought a winner was tight fisted giving four siblings £20,000 each. What do people expect then?

Happybodybunny12 · 18/05/2015 21:04

If you are born in the west you have already won the lottery. Smile

flabby that's so nice really hope you enjoy it.

My lovely inlaws won £3000 on the pools in 1978 just after my fil lost his job. It kept them and 5 kids afloat. Grin

zobey · 18/05/2015 21:17

My mum won the lottery back in 2011. She was part of a syndicate and walked away with over 255k. She payed for my dream wedding and bought the pram i wanted for dd. My db got 6k of it.

Gunpowder · 18/05/2015 21:22

WhenDH and I win we are not telling ANYONE! We I'll tell family we inherited a nest egg (but from the other side iyswim) and do nice things for people, but if no one knows its the lottery there will be no expectation. Wink

Gunpowder · 18/05/2015 21:23

*We'll (damn you fat fingers)

JoanHickson · 18/05/2015 21:34

I don't think I would bother gifting to family/friends if it is going to cause you being called tight fisted by them and their friends. I think I would just help my dc and small charities instead, I am sure they would be grateful.

19lottie82 · 18/05/2015 21:56

I know someone who won 100k on the lotto. And someone who's mum won 60k as part of a syndicate years ago. Oh and my old bosses friend won a mil on the millionaires raffle thing.

Lottiedoubtie · 18/05/2015 22:00

I'm pretty sure I know someone who won about 10 years ago.

She bought a small house outright, and fosters teenagers. She has no partner/no other job and was on the bones of her arse before... she still lives really frugally but every nown again goes on stonkingly expensive holidays (and usually takes a kid in need or two with her).

It's only a theory as she would never tell anyone (although she did tell me she had 'paid off' her mortgage) but I'm pretty sure she has Grin she is lovely and totally deserves it.

ChrisQuean · 18/05/2015 22:07

Yes. My best friend's cousin won the jackpot. It was in the early days of the Lottery in 1995. He won £2m or something and invested the lot in property and now has an empire of buy to lets.

Lymmmummy · 18/05/2015 22:13

Yes - friend of DH won £300k as part of a lottery syndicate -

same guy is extremely lucky in that he also got a significant redundancy payment in mid 40's with the option to receive his pension from 50 completely unheard of nowadays when most of us will have to work til 65plus - he was not in a senior position at his work place he was just lucky to have worked there a long time and got out at the right time - I think his company underwent a merger so wanted staff out in a hurry

none of his good luck has rubbed off on us sadly!!! He is a nice guy and I think almost doesn't know what to do with the money as he isn't married or in a relationship and has no kids and has very simple tastes - we had a cousin of his do some work for us at our house and he told my DH not to mention lottery win as he prefers to keep it quite so not even sure his family know about the win

BlackTrivet · 18/05/2015 22:22

Neighbour (1 min walk) won about £800K about 14 years ago I think. Didn't seem to do anything differently at all after that - still there! No flash cars or anything, just appeared to carry on the same as before. Think he may have bought his children houses though.

My DH won a car before I met him (prize draw he entered when he had just bought a car - so he ended up with two practically the same, sold one though!) and my ex MIL won a car too (prize draw in a large shopping centre).

SpecificOcean · 18/05/2015 22:31

DH knew a chap who, with his siblings won about £700k each.
The chap DH knew gave up work and spent the lot on flash crap and then had to find another job.

peggyundercrackers · 18/05/2015 22:43

I thought someone I knew had won the lottery but turned out she stole over a million pounds from the company she worked for ... We were all Shock

Christophewouldgetit · 18/05/2015 22:52

I was at Uni with someone who's mum won the 2nd highest payout in the UK.. We're FB friends and every now and then he pops up in very glamorous spots looking relaxed and happy Grin

He was utterly lovely and I know they struggled before this (he worked his way through Uni when I and most of my friends just drank and smoked weed) Genuinely so happy for him and his family!

ollieplimsoles · 19/05/2015 07:16

One of DHs relatives won over 100k some years back. She already had a reputation in the family for being tight fisted, when she won it she didn't keep it quiet but didn't buy/give anyone anything. She stayed in her little house, continued working her shifts at Tesco (which annoyed everyone because apparently she didn't 'need' the job anymore), and she gave her children no money Grin

TheCatsMother99 · 19/05/2015 07:24

When I was at school someone else won £50k on a scratch card. Because they were only 16 their parents made them save it & he later used it as a deposit on a house.

HattyMonkey · 19/05/2015 07:29

One of my best friends won £70,000 on a scratch card 2 weeks ago. They are a lovely couple who do so much for the community everyone is delighted for them.

LunaMay · 19/05/2015 08:03

I couldnt imagine winning $50,000 let alone a couple of million. Us girls at work won 18,000 a few weeks ago, around 4500 each and i was ecstatic about that lol

treaclesoda · 19/05/2015 08:05

Yes, someone I used to work with won about £70k. She bought us all cake and paid off her mortgage. Smile The cake was the bit I cared about though Grin

addicted2cake · 19/05/2015 09:21

I found a used scratch card in my garden, on closer inspection it had a £10 on it! Happy days!
