To be pissed off that I cannot buy anything in any shop without this happening?

So, I went shopping yesterday and bought items in five places ... Jack Wills, Jigsaw, Mint Velvet, Neal's Yard and Joules. As I came to pay, without exception, the first question I was asked was ' what's your email address please?' Or ' can I take your postcode please?' or ' and your full name please? '

I'm fed up with it. I just want to pay for my goods and get the receipt. I don't want it ' emailed to me.' I don't want to be added to your mailing list in an almost surreptitious way. Bar supermarkets, it really is in every shop these days.

Yesterday I said, for the first time, ' no, I'd rather not give you my email address, I'd just really like to pay please' and the woman was a bit taken aback and almost didn't know what to do.

So what do you do? Do you divulge this info and not care and then get bombarded with emails every day? Or do you refuse to give the info?

I just say no thanks.
Occasionally they say oh we need it for receipt etc so I just say that's fine I will buy item elsewhere.

FunkyPeacock · 16/05/2015 10:17

YANBU - I feel the same

How I respond depends on my mood but I quite often decline to give my details

I already get daily emails from amazon/gap/eBay et al without adding more to the list!

nightshade · 16/05/2015 10:17

I say no all of the time.

Trapper · 16/05/2015 10:18

I always refuse. Unless I'm in the U.S., in which case I go along with it because it ammuses me to watch them struggle with the fact that I don't have a zip code or a state, and that my phone number does not match the U.S. Telephone number style.

GGabcd · 16/05/2015 10:18

Either say no or give them the one I don't actually ever read!

MarniRose · 16/05/2015 10:19

I can actually feel myself getting all cross as I'm stood there waiting to pay as I just KNOW it'll be more requests for my personal details - and I'm not actually that precious about them!

I just feel a bit awkward saying ' I'd rather not give you any details - can I just pay please?' But I'll work on that

Has happened to me in mothercare a few times. It used to be "do you have an email address so I can send you an electronic receipt?" "no, I'd like the paper receipt please"

Now it's "do you have an email address for guarantee purposes or any other random reason they can think of on the spot " I still say "no, I'd like the paper receipt"

I did give them my email once and got 5 marketing emails in 3 days from elc/mothercare. Angry

Tarrainabit · 16/05/2015 10:19

I wonder what they would do if you said 'email address? I don't have one'

CaptainAnkles · 16/05/2015 10:20

I was asked for my email address in Argos the other day. I just said no thank you. I get enough junk crap without adding to it.

YouBastardSockBalls · 16/05/2015 10:20

I always refuse.
If they insist, I say I will if they give me their details. They never do, but they still fail to see why I don't want to.

MarniRose · 16/05/2015 10:21

I bought some bits in New Look for my daughter about 6 months ago. I now get daily emails. Exactly same scenario from Gap.

I've never had this! I buy most things online though so they still get my email address. Dh and I are currently unsubscribing from all these annoying emails. It's very therapeutic.

MarieJeanne · 16/05/2015 10:23

Just Tell them "it's [email protected]"

PresidentTwonk · 16/05/2015 10:23

Tell them you don't have an email/phone number/address. Tell them you live in a tented village where you can't get post and you disagree with all modern technology and conveniences. I tell all the sales people who call/approach me that and they get all flustered and hang up/go away Grin

MarniRose · 16/05/2015 10:23

Grin @marie

I just say no thank you every time. Only once or twice has there been any kind of raised eyebrow at it. I would also go elsewhere if they insisted. I get enough junk emails without adding more to it.

Mrsjayy · 16/05/2015 10:24

I say no they have an override button on the tills its so annoying and inasive and while imat no i dont want your loyalty points card

HicDraconis · 16/05/2015 10:25

I don't give out my email address, phone number or postcode (although it's only 4 digits so most UK shops can't do anything with it anyway). If they can't sell me what I would like without getting my contact details, I'll shop elsewhere. I'm quite friendly about declining, didn't have a problem last time I was in the UK at all.

Mrsjayy · 16/05/2015 10:25

Invasive*

MarniRose · 16/05/2015 10:25

Ah yes, the loyalty cards that I got foisted on me recently. Monsoon and Debenhams.

OhtoblazeswithElvira · 16/05/2015 10:25

Tarrainabit I saw someone do that in Mothercare once. She was obviously lying and the shop assistant knew it but they can't say anything, can they? Not a bad solution IMO Wink

ChuffinAda · 16/05/2015 10:26

I feel the same. I got collared by a woman as I was walking through town wanting to take my postcode. I politely declined and she said very loudly 'its only your fucking postcode!'

Charming

TendonQueen · 16/05/2015 10:28

I say 'No, I don't want to do that thanks'. Sometimes they then try the line about needing it if you return the item but if you refuse they'll give up. Also, asking for a copy of their policy on how they use the information and whether it complies with data protection throws them and will usually prompt them to say it doesn't matter and they'll override it. Smile

Instituteofstudies · 16/05/2015 10:29

I only get asked for address when I'm returning something. Some places ask if they have my email for discounts, promotions (GAP) and most places offer the loyalty card. Which is annoying.
