Or was this man really rude?

I'm at dm's with dc. DM had a man come to cut the grass and dc were on the step watching him. When he finished, he had a little chat with them (and DM)
He asked their age and remarked that ds2 is big for his age (true)
DM said yes, and they're like chalk and cheese aren't they (also true)
He said what? They're brothers?
DM laughed and said yes.
what, like proper brothers or is one the milkman's?

Shock

DM seems to think it wasn't rude and just an observation. I think it's a horrible comment. Aibu?

BitOutOfPractice has hit the nail on the head, and anyone who thinks otherwise really needs to get a grip on reality.

DextersMistress · 14/05/2015 20:03

get a grip on reality

I only asked if it was rude ffs! If I'd have said
wibu to have taken his strimmer and trimmed his bollocks with it
Then I'd need a grip!

Hahaha, very funny

RoboticSealpup · 15/05/2015 06:42

It's a pretty gross thing to say.

WildStyle · 15/05/2015 06:42

FWIW I think it's an outdated unfunny joke that is stupid to say. Particularly in front of kids.

OrangeVase · 15/05/2015 07:00

Yes, just a cliche, a bit of something to say in a social exchange in which nothing is actually said but words are traded to oil the wheels. Means nothing - just a way of commenting that kids look unalike.

MsVanRein · 15/05/2015 07:03

I agree with WildStyle re the brown eyes.

Me and DSis have brown eyes and green eyes respectively, neither of our parents do, they are both blue-eyed.

Fairly sure we didn't BOTH genetically mutate at birth.

OrangeVase · 15/05/2015 07:11

Can I ask, was the guy an older man? Over 50? It sounds like an expression which is not used by younger generation especially as pp said in the age of blended families.

Things change over generations and offense is often give/taken both ways. Unless harm is meant I wouldn't worry.

By the way - as an aside - it sounds like such an idyllic scene: two kids sitting on a step watching the grass-cutting on a sunny day at DGM's house - takes me back to my childhood.

cubmum · 15/05/2015 07:16

Just a joke. I was told I was from the rubbish dump or found at front door hence nothing like my brother

Lucyccfc · 15/05/2015 07:21

It's just a joke.

When our DS was born, I actually said to DH 'you can tell he's yours and not the milk mans'. DS was and still is the image of his Dad.

This was comment was brought up to date by a few friends who said 'Bloody hell, you don't need a DNA test'. I found it funny.

Idontseeanydragons · 15/05/2015 07:38

Try having a ginger husband and 3 children with distinctly non ginger hair. I got this All The Time.
One of my stock answers was to point at each of them and reply 'the butcher, the baker, the candlestick maker'... Grin
It's a joke. It might be old and tedious but it's just a joke.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 15/05/2015 08:23

The world really has well and truly cracked it's face. Everyone seems to look for an offensive element in almost everything now.
As others have said. It's a joke.
The sense of humour on this planet is very sadly lacking

DextersMistress · 15/05/2015 09:13

Yes he is over 50. Fwiw I am aware it was a joke even without 50 posters telling me! I just didn't think it was funny.

Off shopping today for grips and sense of humour Wink

It's whats known as "banter", OP, or if you want to be down wig da kidz, "the bantz".

hackmum · 15/05/2015 09:21

Should have been "wiv" - bloody autocorrect.

TheEponymousGrub · 15/05/2015 15:51

WildStyle Dominant/recessive is a different thing from expressed/not expressed. (I tried to write an explanation but it got too long/boring.)

Previously-unexpressed genes can be expressed in the next generation (like a child appearing of a different race from its parents). But recessive genes can't become dominant.

BTW blue- and green-eyes are caused by the same (dominant) allele, just it's expressed differently (interaction with other factors). Brown is the dominant one: if it is there it MUST be expressed...

ooh sorry nope, too boring again...

IggyStrop · 15/05/2015 16:20

I's an extremely tired, unfunny and yawn-worthy joke. For that reason alone he deserves having a strimmer waved in the general direction of his bollocks.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 15/05/2015 16:39

I don't understand the issue over Alison's postConfused Dh and I have blue/grey eyes and ds has brown eyes.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 15/05/2015 16:40

He's definitely oursGrin

WildStyle · 16/05/2015 08:48

Sorry, yes TheEponymousGrub you're absolutely right. It didnt sound quite right what I wrote but I was cross at someone suggesting all blue-eyed kids with brown eyed parents weren't related! I crossed my unexpressed and recessive - now that is confusing!

You're explanation wasn't boring. It was clear and informative. But then I am a bit geeky....

suzannecanthecan · 16/05/2015 08:57

I think its ok if the mother makes the joke at her own expense, but rather insulting for somone else to make it at her expense

Fleecyleesy · 16/05/2015 09:06

Yabu.

It was a joke.

Have you even read your own username OP? Are you the only one allowed to joke?

DextersMistress · 16/05/2015 17:20

Hmm yes, my username referring to a fictional TV character is totally the same.

Anyway, I put my hands up 2 days ago and copped to being unreasonable!

I suggest a new modern version of the joke.

What, like really brothers or is one James Hewitt.
