to not really understand some of the posters on baby names

A poster will post asking if people like the name Juliet and there will always be someone who responds, fairly quickly, with

If you like Juliet you might also like:

Amelia
Beth
Helena
Josephine
Sylvia
Marianne
Maud
Genevieve
Maryann
Flora
Hermione
Daphne
Cecilia
and
on
and
on
and
on.

Do some posters just have a list of their favourite names that they're determined to push down everyone's throats? Confused

I dodn't even understand why anyone would ask total strangers about names for their child :/

They just list random names which may as well have come form googling whatever phrase they asked for e.g. "Pretty girls names" "Flower names" "Awesome name for boy"

DragonWithAGirlTattoo · 11/05/2015 16:14

well they probably ask in case they end up with a naice sounding name like Chlamdya?

Hakluyt · 11/05/2015 16:16

What I don't understand is the vanity namers. Change your own name or get a dog then give your child a name..... !!!!!

WorraLiberty · 11/05/2015 16:17

I don't understand the threads that say something like...

"If I like Timothy, what other names will I like?"

How the fuck would we know? Confused

MrsNextDoor · 11/05/2015 16:18

Oh lol YANBU. And another thing....when someone asks "What name to go with siblings Max and Joe" I think "What? Names are not an outfit! Just pick one you like!"

Also...."I like Persophone....but to use nickname Pippa"

JUST CALL HER PIPPA!

Or whatever weird nickname they like.

Lipsync · 11/05/2015 16:18

I don't understand some of the posters on baby names, but it's because I can't imagine canvassing complete strangers disinhibited by anonymity, or being quite so obsessed with the all-important question of whether a name is 'chavvy' or 'try-hard' (disclaimer - not my words). Both are clearly horrible, appalling errors of judgement.

And everyone has a weird preoccupation with whether initials might spell something, or whether little Orla might get teased in the playground because an adult imagines a child might play anagrams. Grin

Lipsync · 11/05/2015 16:21

Yes, Mrs Next, the 'having a 'proper' or more Serious Sounding Name for the birth cert' is a mighty preoccupation. Personally, I will be cheering on the high court judges Lexi-Mae and Chardonnay as they send Pippa and Jonathan down for five years...

WorraLiberty · 11/05/2015 16:21

"Why aren't the kids playing with my Dick?" Grin

Is it because they don't like his name?

ApocalypseThen · 11/05/2015 16:22

What name do I call my child to engineer the nickname Betty?

00100001 · 11/05/2015 16:25

I wonder how many of the posters are actually influenced by these internet strangers...

PureMorning · 11/05/2015 16:25

My children have nickname names (ben rather than Benjamin), I've been told they can never get high powered jobs because of my choicesGrin

balletnotlacrosse · 11/05/2015 16:26

I'm always amused by posters looking for a 'cool' or 'quirky' name. Well, if you have to ask.......

OP posts:
FineDamBeaver · 11/05/2015 16:27

Interesting.

I've never been on these threads myself, but I can kind of see why people do. There do tend to be clusters of names people like, so I'd imagine that people would be able to predict what other names I'd like from some of my favourites.

Loads of batshit-crazy stuff on MN, but it's never occurred to me that the baby name threads are a particularly strong example of it.

Indantherene · 11/05/2015 16:28

The only posts I do get are those how many Evie/ Isabel / Jaden s do you know. If you aren't already in the baby scene you won't necessarily realise that actually you aren't being unique to come up with it.

DocHollywood · 11/05/2015 16:28

My youngest dd is 17 yet I have a weird fascination for the baby name threads. My favourites are the contrived nickname ones. 'I love the nn Woody. What can I call my son?' You can call him anything you want! Thomas, Richard, Henry, you can still have the nn Woody ffs.

Donatellalymanmoss · 11/05/2015 16:29

I gave my children big names but use nicknames mostly because I have a name that has no nickname potential and thought they might enjoy a bit more flexibility. I couldn't give a toss what anyone else thinks about this, but just thought I'd offer those concerned about this my perspective.

ApocalypseThen · 11/05/2015 16:29

I've been told they can never get high powered jobs because of my choices

You can only have a high powered job if your name is English (preferred), Classical Latin or Greek and at a stretch, Hebrew.

Every other name is destined for the Argos stockroom or prison.

grumpysquash · 11/05/2015 16:30

Why not?

grumpysquash · 11/05/2015 16:31

I meant, why can't you have a high powered job if you are called Ben rather than Benjamin?

Donatellalymanmoss · 11/05/2015 16:31

What I find really baffling are the posters who know exactly where the name they chose is in the baby name league table. Just choose a name you like and stop being so try hard.

OrangeBeehive · 11/05/2015 16:32

The "what's Sophie's sister called?" and "Brother for Callum?" threads always make me laugh. I don't think I've ever seen a thread called "What's Debbie and Dave's daughter called?" - apparently it's only sibling names that have to match!

Lipsync · 11/05/2015 16:33

But you can just google to look up the official stats for how many little Jaydens were registered, which will give you the total numbers, so there doesn't seem a lot of point in forgoing that in favour of a bunch of Internet strangers who tell you breathlessly that they know seven Poppys under two in the West Midlands.

I do think the baby name forum is a kind of mad underbelly of Mn, seething with class anxiety and worry about what other people will think of their taste in naming little Lulabelle-Harriette. It's kind of like baby naming as aspirational branding.

MrsNextDoor · 11/05/2015 16:33

Lip I love that image!

"Pleased to meed you...may I introduce you to Doctor Kai and Proffesor Kaleesha?"

Donatellalymanmoss · 11/05/2015 16:34

because as demonstrated by the snobs who post such rubbish some people make snap judgements and like to stereotype people based on their name rather than their abilities - it's a sad consequence of the GB class system.

SaucyJack · 11/05/2015 16:35

I genuinely think Juliet does go quite well with names you've listed OP.
