to not really understand some of the posters on baby names

A poster will post asking if people like the name Juliet and there will always be someone who responds, fairly quickly, with

If you like Juliet you might also like:

Amelia
Beth
Helena
Josephine
Sylvia
Marianne
Maud
Genevieve
Maryann
Flora
Hermione
Daphne
Cecilia
and
on
and
on
and
on.

Do some posters just have a list of their favourite names that they're determined to push down everyone's throats? Confused

OP posts:
AreYouSureGeorgeBernard · 11/05/2015 17:58

Would I be uncharitable if I suggested that some posters are testing the waters to see what's now considered declasse?

dontcallmelen · 11/05/2015 18:05

Wisps im with you, wtf is the angst over nnConfused

AreYouSureGeorgeBernard · 11/05/2015 18:14

Nicknames. Please, don't go there. What most people call nicknames on here aren't even nicknames, they're short forms of names! "Jugears" is a nickname. "Flumpy" is a nickname. "Sparkle" is a nickname. Charlie, Ben and Sam are shortened versions of names for heavens sake!

What is all this unsolicited "Susannah (nn Suzie), Amanda (nn Mandy), Stephanie (nn Stevie)" stuff that MN is obsessed with?

I'd jump down the throat of anyone who suggested a nickname to me! Grr!

Why, why, why name one thing and address as another?

Mamiof3 · 11/05/2015 18:20

It's friggin hilarious when people put 'what name to be nicknamed Jenny'
People will say 'how about Marjorie nn. Jenny'

'What name can Bonnie come from'
'How about calling her Bonjoura'

'like Hatty but need longer name'
'You could use Harriet but I prefer Halycone or Helenka nn Hatty, have you considered those?'

'What can be shortened to Indie'
'India? Indiana?'
'No too common I was thinking Industana-Antigone nn Indie what do you all think?'

Then you get people saying they are in Ireland & wanting a traditional Irish name and saying 'How about Caoimlinh or Grainne' then someone will respond with 'My friend named her dd Niamh and no one can pronounce it don't be cruel to your dd how about Amy or if you MUST go Irish, Erin?' THEY ARE IN IRELAND IM SURE THEY WONT HAVE THIS ISSUE

Strokethefurrywall · 11/05/2015 18:42

I love every person on this thread!

Baby Names is my daily entertainment - I get to do this Hmm and this Shock and this Grin a lot. Mostly whilst thinking "twat"

The ones I don't get are those that truly can't choose between 15 names, or those that worry about initials spelling out PIG or something. My maiden name was George. I was nicknamed Georgie Porgie and that was regularly followed by "... pudding and pie, kissed the boys and made them cry!" - which was true, it was the 80's, I had an afro and I broke a boys arm during kiss chase.

Those and the "just how popular is Lily-Mae/Evie-Mae/Sophie-Grace (insert name here)" threads. Answer: Very, we all know too many but it's the Sarah/Emma/Louise/Joanne/Claire [insert 80's name here] of this generation. Use it if you like it, sheesh!"

Just have some courage of your convictions and don't worry what other people think for gods sake! I have boys with names that aren't favorably looked upon on mumsnet (think American trailer and Irish surname respectively) and I couldn't give a rats arse if people don't like it.

GlitzAndGigglesx · 11/05/2015 18:44

Mami Industana-Antigone Grin. Then there's the ones who simply cannot disclose their elite list of names in case their best friends uncles grandads neighbours daughter uses the same name. And it's always an overused name like Eve

Alisvolatpropiis · 11/05/2015 18:50

I've posted on there. Mostly when not actually pregnant. I do find some responses helpful but have taken all advice with a pinch of salt ever since I posted about using the name Artorius as Arthur was getting very popular now (I was joking).

Nobody, not one poster, told me to get a grip! Shock

Coyoacan · 11/05/2015 18:52

I just find it peculiar because I am of a different generation and live in a different country and people are giving their children names that my generation wouldn't have dreamed of giving our children.

TragicallyUnbeyachted · 11/05/2015 19:01

I do get the point of an opening post along the lines of "I like Juliet, what else might I like?" although ideally you'd want to start with three or four names the poster likes. Most of us do have some sort of consistent taste in names and It's remarkable how often someone hasn't realised that (for example) their taste tends towards three-syllable slightly old-fashioned names that don't end in -a -- or at least hasn't worked out how to identify other names that fit that pattern.

But that doesn't mean that a poster who is simply asking what people think of Juliet wants to know what else people imagine she might like instead.

I know someone with the initials GIT who does wish that his parents had thought about initials for a moment.

GrassyBottom · 11/05/2015 19:08

I have never ventured onto baby names before. Read this thread and wandered off to look. Hmm.
I think perhaps people should wait until bonkers pregnancy hormones wear off before naming their poor child.

Alisvolatpropiis · 11/05/2015 19:45

MrsJayy

It's per-seff-on-ee.

Royalsighness · 11/05/2015 19:50

I've just been in there for the first and last time! Some of the names are absolute nonsense.

AbbeyRoadCrossing · 11/05/2015 19:50

I love baby names section, it's great entertainment!

Confession time: I did ask about a brother for DS and did get some inspiration. I liked most of the names suggested

My favourites are when it's something you'd clearly name a pet or a name that's just no-go. E.g. I like Lucifer it's quite rare isn't it? Then the OP refuses to listen to anyone. Strangely addictive.

I do wonder about the high court judge argument. When I was at school everyone had very classic, mainstream names and it was very unusual to have a stand out one. Now, I think there's a greater range and it wouldn't seem so odd. Although I did have a CV once from someone named after a famous mountain and they still got interviewed -makes you memorable as well

Royalsighness · 11/05/2015 19:55

they are nice names OP, I particularly like basket. What about

Ricotta
Compylobacter
Rhesus
Photo-Louise
Lounge
Staybrite
Arabica
Jo Malone sale
Khettle Mai

Mrsjayy · 11/05/2015 19:55

Nope still does not make sense

0x530x610x750x630x79 · 11/05/2015 19:55

I asked on a name thread because, i had chosen a name a bit odd, and wanted to know if people would make the comments i suspected might be made. They did so i changed it.

TheTravellingLemon · 11/05/2015 20:02

I love baby names. I like the weird spelling ones too or the ones where the OP just can't spell the name, phoebe is always great value in that regard.

Also does anyone remember cupcake?

That said, I have posted there for opinions before. I had a sudden thought of a name and I just wondered what people thought of it. It was pretty well received, so maybe I should be worried Shock

DinoSnores · 11/05/2015 20:07

Phew, just went to have a look and found a thread in which my DD's name is praised. Otherwise I was going to have to change it, obviously.

LooksLikeImStuckHere · 11/05/2015 20:07

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who feels the way about the naming threads! I could block them but secretly, I quite like the laughs.

I'm pregnant. I wonder what kind of fun I could have. We have a joke name, I'd love to see the reaction...

YorkieButtonsizeMen · 11/05/2015 20:10

Per - SEPH - ony

Per seph on e

Or just be hanged and call it Percy phone

Alisvolatpropiis · 11/05/2015 20:10

You missed the perfect opportunity for the "it's all Greek to me" line there, MrsJayy Grin

AuntieStella · 11/05/2015 20:17

As it's blatantly obvious that any/all Baby Name posters can read what you are saying here.

If the topic's beneath you and filled with saddos (like me) just hide it.

CookPassBabtrigde · 11/05/2015 20:24

I never understand the ones that say 'what would Mason's sister be called?' I don't see what the first child's name has to do with it really.
But then I wouldn't choose matchy sounding names for siblings myself.
I know a family whose children all have very similar names, think Sarah-Emily, her sister is called Sara Emma, the brother is Andrew and younger brother is Daniel Andrew*

*not the real names of course, but that kind of similarity. Always found it a bit odd
