A poster will post asking if people like the name Juliet and there will always be someone who responds, fairly quickly, with

If you like Juliet you might also like:

Amelia
Beth
Helena
Josephine
Sylvia
Marianne
Maud
Genevieve
Maryann
Flora
Hermione
Daphne
Cecilia
and
on
and
on
and
on.

Do some posters just have a list of their favourite names that they're determined to push down everyone's throats? Confused

The ones I don't get are when people are not even pregnant!

We've decided to TTC in 2017 and I'm so excited I've already got a shortlist. What do you think?

Hubert
Ogbert
Englebert

Hmm Confused

Or the ones: "I like Daisy and Poppy but do you think they're too flowery".

Well yes, flowery is a word that springs to mind when presented with names of flowers Confused

I love the baby name thread and provides lots of scope for entertainment (and mischief).
I had my three children in the good old days before Mumsnet. We got a name book and discussed names we did/didn't like. In the end DH was keen on a particular boys' name so we agreed that if we had a boy we would use that and if we had a girl she would be named after my grandmother. Simple as that. DC1 has the name DH chose, DC2 is named after my grandmother.
Over the years I have come across quite a few people with the same two names (sometimes girl first), but all it shows is that people tend to favour the same kind of names, and it doesn't really matter.
DC3 is much younger and we decided that as the first two names were pretty standard he needed a similar type of name, not something outlandish. We didn't consult anyone about our choice and I must agree that asking random strangers for approval does seem a bit odd.
I also get a bit irritated by people calling Ben a nickname for Benjamin, when it is a diminutive, and a nickname would be something related to Ben's appearance or character, such as Shorty or Sunshine. Hey ho, it's a tough life being a pedant. Wink

Me too Larry. Bear Grylls has a nickname. Ed Balls has a shortened name. (He may have a nickname too for all I know, but if he has he's keeping quiet about it.)

I've been wondering what all the baby name determinists have made of the new cabinet: along all the stolid boys names we have Nicky, Liz, Amber - even Tina Shock

I actually found the baby name section quite helpful although I was told to use the name Indiana for a girl if I liked it and also that it is fine to name my DD after my cat

On the whole I think it is sometimes helpful to have an outside opinion.

I do have now what I call "MN names" and they are names I have only ever heard given the green light on here... Lots of love for Sylvie and Beatrix and Apollo and Milo. Not massively "out there" but names I equate with MN and not real life?

Totality22 · 12/05/2015 18:25

PS I didn't name DD after cat nor did I go for Indiana!

I did however ask for advice on the baby name forum!
