to not really understand some of the posters on baby names

A poster will post asking if people like the name Juliet and there will always be someone who responds, fairly quickly, with

If you like Juliet you might also like:

Amelia
Beth
Helena
Josephine
Sylvia
Marianne
Maud
Genevieve
Maryann
Flora
Hermione
Daphne
Cecilia
and
on
and
on
and
on.

Do some posters just have a list of their favourite names that they're determined to push down everyone's throats? Confused

The posters who get their knickers in a knot about a middle name are also odd.

It's really not going to make a huge difference to your daughter's life whether her middle name is Elizabeth or Charlotte or Sophie. Just pick one you like or that will honour a relative.

I've been told they can never get high powered jobs because of my choices

Well, I did come across people saying Tristram Hunt can't possibly be leader of the Labour Party with a name like that.

Thread carefully people, baby names are a minefield.
Grin

Hotpotpie · 11/05/2015 16:36

I get the odd lists of names but equally I'm pregnant and I literally have no girls names in mind. I'm not saying that I'd get anything off here but you never know sometimes inspiration is needed

Donatellalymanmoss · 11/05/2015 16:36

I think the brother/ sister of threads at generally just people looking for a bit of inspiration whilst giving an indication of their taste in names.

Gileswithachainsaw · 11/05/2015 16:37

And no matter how awful the name there's always someone who loves it and was going to use it until their dc was the opposite sex.

oh yes I love corinthian. Dd was going to be a corinthian but we chose when she was born a girl. yes of course you were going to use corinthian Hmm

I don't understand the old lady names it has to be said. Doris? really?

ShouldIworryornothelp · 11/05/2015 16:43

I don't get the overly flouncy try hard names like Persephone or Ophelia.

Yes my name is Mr Balls and I like the name Ophelia

Eustasiavye · 11/05/2015 16:43

My favourites area the ones that go along the lines of:

Please help us decide between these 2 names, I like Ben my husband prefers Sam.

We have chosen a middle name -Charles- which is a definate as it is a family name on both dudes.

So which do you prefer Ben or Sam?

Cue post after post saying- oh both names are so boring I would pick xavier with MacBeth as the Middle name.

Yes how about xavier Lawrence, or macBeth Lawrence then.

QueenB14 · 11/05/2015 16:43

My dd's name has had a slating on there once or twice

It keeps me up at night it really does HmmGrin

Tootaboo · 11/05/2015 16:44

Before getting pregnant I had loads of names I liked but now when it comes to choosing one for my baby I'm struggling, nothing seems to interest me massively so I ask for ideas incase there's one that I've not thought about.

I've also asked the dreaded sibling question, not because I want it to be matchy or not clash but because if someone has named their child the same as I have then it may mean we have similar tastes and I can see if I like any of the others suggested. If someone hated a name I loved I wouldn't change it because a stranger on the internet didn't like it and if I had picked my names I wouldn't seek approval for them either.

DicteSvendsen · 11/05/2015 16:46

I hate the posts that try to control the information given.

"I didn't ask for that thank you :-| "

So snippy. If you don't want the suggestions, forget them. It's useful at the very least to know what ten names are being suggested ad infinitum.

TheJiminyConjecture · 11/05/2015 16:46

My favourite are the "What do you think of Womble/Thundercat for DS?"

Cue a few posts of "Are you sure? / It's not a name / quite a big thing to live up to" Then a whole host of people who think it's the best name ever and they wish they'd thought of it. Then there's always one who personally knows a little Thundercat and he carries it off really well. Followed by the "so what if it's not a real name, all names were made up at some point your bin your rules hun"

TheJiminyConjecture · 11/05/2015 16:48

Gah your bubz your rulez hun

fiveacres · 11/05/2015 16:48

I've chosen a very popular name for my baby but it's meaningful to me so have steered clear of baby names. I just think it's nice to talk names sometimes. There was a bloody horrible thread there the other day though.

SaucyJack · 11/05/2015 16:49

Those are my DDs names shouldIworry

Yes. You should worry Grin

ShouldIworryornothelp · 11/05/2015 16:51

Please tell me your surname is Balls or longbottom or Back or some other funny variation Grin

FromSeaToShining · 11/05/2015 16:51

The posts I love are when people say, "It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. As long as you and your husband like the name that's all that counts." I sometimes think people forget that they are naming actual human children who will have to cope with names like Frodo or Hatpin.

Honeylavender · 11/05/2015 16:53

My parents gave me an unusual name. I really wish they hadn't!

FromSeaToShining · 11/05/2015 16:58

Admittedly, I don't really understand why people choose names like Alfie or Sam to go on the birth certificate rather than Alfred or Samuel. But if that's what they want to do, who really cares? Shrug.

Mrsjayy · 11/05/2015 17:11

I went to theDrs a while back locum GP Dr kylie if mumsnet was around 28ish years ago they would be telling kylies mum that she would never amount to much with THAT name

IggyStrop · 11/05/2015 17:14

What boggles me is the posters that come on to say "I hate your chosen name because I went to a school with a Dexter and he was an awful bully and ended up in prison for murder."

Ah right, thanks for that supremely relevant contribution.

fiveacres · 11/05/2015 17:26

Best one is 'I don't like Sophie as my friend's cat is called Sophie.'

Yeah, some random strangers pets name is JUST what I think when naming my child Grin

I've decided on Isabella. Named after WH not twilight ...

DoADittyBingBangBell · 11/05/2015 17:33

As I was abroad at the time and the local bookshop didn't have any baby name books in English I got the inspiration for my first child's name from good old google! I didn't know about parenting sites back then-internet was for MySpace and friends reunited! To be honest I don't think I would have asked on a forum anyway I didn't even run my choices by my friends, just fell in love with the name and announced it when baby came.

My second daughter I got my inspiration from come dine with me Blush heard the presenter saying the name and fell in love with it!

GlitzAndGigglesx · 11/05/2015 17:35

Oh gosh I roll my eyes when I read things like the OP! And names to go with the surname like they'll be addressed by their full name all the time. Why not just ask for name ideas?

chaletdays · 11/05/2015 17:38

I actually skip through the posts that have a long ream of names. They make the poster sound a bit obsessive, or very bored.

WipsGlitter · 11/05/2015 17:41

It's all the nickname business gets my goat. A nickname is IMHO organic not imposed.
