To get really annoyed by the talent show classic line "this is my last chance"

I know, I know, it's a ridiculous thing to be annoyed about. I just can't get my head round it - ok, if someone has genuinely decided that they have done enough auditions and they want to call it a day if they're unsuccessful again, fair enough. But I hate it when there's someone young, fit and healthy enough to be displaying their talent on TV and then out comes the classic line..."I don't know what I'll do if I don't get through this round...it really is my last chance to get anywhere with this" (or something along those lines)

AIBU to cringe each time I hear it?! I imagine it's the producers making them say it to try and up the drama levels but it just frustrates the hell out of me! (And yes I know it's awful TV but I love the shows in general, just not that one line!!)

I really have to take it to the next level this week. I've got to give 110%. Hmm

Mrsjayy · 09/05/2015 14:15

Thats 1 of the reasons i stopped watching x factor 1 kid was whinging this is my dream only hope last chance they were 17 does me in or you get the misty eyed dad im doing it for my kids fuck off

TryingToSleepHere · 09/05/2015 14:21

Aahhhh thank you thank you! DH was looking at me like I was bonkers last night, I was watching BGT and there was the family of 4 men all going "waaaah, it's our last chance" and I'm afraid I just couldn't help myself! I was so annoyed and had a massive rant, I just thought "why? Why is it your last chance? Have you got a crystal ball which has foretold a massive disaster which will happen in the next year of your life?!"

OK so it turned out the dad had had a heart attack in the past but surely if he thought he was so weak that he'd die sometime this year, he wouldn't be fit enough to put himself through all this?

I was gutted as well, I really liked their singing Sad

Its sentimental twaddle isnt it I loved them though

KurriKurri · 09/05/2015 14:33

This is my last chance to me translates as 'I can't cope with endless auditions and rejections so actually I haven't got the stamina and toughness required to cope with a career in this industry'

I also hate 'I've wanted to do this since I was five, its my dream, I;ve always wanted to be a singer' and yet they have done nothing to further this aim - no singing in pubs, no busking on the street, no trying out for bands, no choirs, no attempt to learn their craft properly. What they actually mean is 'I've always wanted to be famous without actually doing any of the hard graft'.

Rant over. Grin

GloGirl · 09/05/2015 14:39

Stop watching that bollocks

Mrsjayy · 09/05/2015 14:41

Yeah it really is I just want to be famous

cosytoaster · 09/05/2015 14:45

I hate -
Question: 'what does this mean to you?'
Answer (always) :'everything'

Always the same question, always the same meaningless answer.

RedCrayons · 09/05/2015 14:59

CostToaster beat me to my personal fave.
I also love 'I've waited my whole life for this'. You're SIXTEEN!!!!!

At least when you watch the Voice it's usually the oldies who've been slogging around pubs for 20 years who say 'this is my last chance'.

MitzyLeFrouf · 09/05/2015 15:05

YANBU

I love when they say things like 'I'm literally singing for my life'.

Humph. If I suspend you above a tank full of piranhas while you sing your bloody Adele song, then you'll be singing for your life sonny.

BertieBotts · 09/05/2015 15:08

Grin I saw a clip of an interview with the three HP stars when they'd just been cast the other day and little 10 year old Emma Watson said "Nothing like this has ever happened to me before!"

Mrsjayy · 09/05/2015 15:09

Louis walsh used to say you are singing for your life every week singing for your life would mean being held over a cliff with a loon shouting SING Grin

Mrsjayy · 09/05/2015 15:10

Aww little Emma Watson

Mrsjayy · 09/05/2015 15:11

Oh xpost on life saving singing

MitzyLeFrouf · 09/05/2015 15:13

We could have a rang of 'singing for my life' scenarios.

Being dangled over a cliff
Being dangled above a tank of piranhas

Being tied to a railway track
Being put in a lion cage
Armed combat against another competitor

It would certainly spice up X Factor.

millionsmom · 09/05/2015 15:14

My personal 'favourite' is
I have so much more to give.

Surely you should've been giving it your all already???

On Four in a Bed, when the owners are given an honest mark, they always bleat 'You just don't appreciate what we're trying to do'. Love, you're trying to make money, same as the rest of the world. Stop being so precious.

Mrsjayy · 09/05/2015 15:19

Oh ive just been watching 4 in a bed where a woman just said that Grin xfactor should have a Russian Roulette week replace film week

RedCrayons · 09/05/2015 16:24

'This isn't the last you've heard of me'. Wanna bet?

Didactylos · 09/05/2015 16:54

'sing for your life' is a brilliant idea
like a cross between BGT and the roman circus
someone pitch this to a television company

RedCrayons · 09/05/2015 17:18

They always say 'dancing for the life' on Strictly when they get towards the end.
It couldn't be more ridiculous.

pluCaChange · 09/05/2015 19:12

Mumsnet: cutting through the bullshit to bring you the satirical highlights! so you don't have to watch all this rubbish

Grin
VelvetRose · 09/05/2015 19:16

I totally agree with you! This ruins the shows for me!

The other week there was a woman in the voice who was good but who didn't get through. She said "really, don't worry about me. This was fun but I have a lovely family and I'm reay happy, I just thought I'd give this a go" it was so refreshing!!!

Mrsjayy · 09/05/2015 19:45

Now if give it a go lady had a sob story then she might have got through.

DidoTheDodo · 09/05/2015 19:51

kurrikurri yes yes yes. Exactly what I think too.
