I call my teenage son "babe"....I'm not sure what your point is?

VacantExpression · 08/05/2015 10:50

I can't comment honestly without outing myself but if you have no other concerns about their relationship YABU.

TheMoa · 08/05/2015 10:50

Lots of people do.

I've never knowingly uttered the word 'babe' in my life, but it's not inappropriate for use with a child. People use it as others would use 'darling'.

spababe · 08/05/2015 10:51

no concerns whatsover just seems more a GF term than one for a daughter but then I don't have a daughter admittedly

MythicalKings · 08/05/2015 10:51

YABU. It's a term of endearment to some.

DinkyDye · 08/05/2015 10:51

but you can have the nn spababe Hmm

GoGiYerHeedAWobble · 08/05/2015 10:51

I call my teenage son babe sometimes. what's wrong with it Confused

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 08/05/2015 10:51

Why not exactly? It's not a term I would use but isn't inappropriate in any way.

'Babe' is also a little pink pig...

PelvicFloorClenchReminder · 08/05/2015 10:52

It's an accepted term of endearment, isn't it? That alone wouldn't bother me.

Choccyhobnob · 08/05/2015 10:52

My dad calls me and my sisters babe and gorgeous all the time! lol

flora717 · 08/05/2015 10:53

Pretty offensive to term anyone of adulthood/ near adulthood really.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 08/05/2015 10:53

Dinky... but OP wants to be the only babe, The Babe!

KoalaDownUnder · 08/05/2015 10:54

Erm, I've been known to call my dog 'babe'.

It's not a sexual/romantic thing, if that's what you're getting at. Hmm

RainbowFlutterby · 08/05/2015 10:54

My nan calls the tiny infants in our family "babes".

Is that wrong too?

BallsforEarrings · 08/05/2015 10:55

I call all my adult children and step-children babe, be they female, straight male or gay, my own or not they are all my 'babes' just because they are! Smile

Ohbollocksandballs · 08/05/2015 10:55

My dad calls me babe Hmm not sure what your issue is?

LittleprincessinGOLDrocks · 08/05/2015 10:55

It's just a term of endearment, like sweetheart etc. If he was calling her sexy ( I have seen parents refer to their kids like this on facebook) I could see your point. But babe is fine, it's like baby.

spababe · 08/05/2015 10:56

reassuring - thank you

confused79 · 08/05/2015 10:58

My great uncle used to call me babe, and never been anything dodgy about it. It's just a word some people choose to use, like "love", "hun" etc...

chunkythighs · 08/05/2015 10:58

Jaysus! A rose by any other name would smell as sweet!- and all that jazz.
It's a pet name for a child. How can anyone find it offensive or inappropriate?

londonrach · 08/05/2015 10:59

One of my dads friends called my sister babe and gorgeous all the time whilst we were growing and ive known him since i was born. (Dad uni friend, married late so was our 'big brother' for years) He never meant anything by it and used to make my sister and i giggle when he said it hence why i think he said it. He now passed away, but he was an important part of my very happy childhood. He never once laid a finger on either of us and did nothing more than spend hours holding one end of skipping ropes and putting up with two little girls following him and chatting to him all the time! Term of endearment. Is this guy from Yorkshire?

hedgehogsdontbite · 08/05/2015 11:00

I think if there were any weirdness with the term, which there isn't, surely that would be in calling your girlfriend it rather than your child. YABU.

spababe · 08/05/2015 11:00

Yorkshire is possible - I'm terrible at accents

OP posts:
DinkyDye · 08/05/2015 11:01

londonrach that's really sweet.

londonrach · 08/05/2015 11:01

Sister and me not just my sister.
