Once more, acts of 'god' have left communities blown apart.

Does any one really feel these vilages deserved it?

God's a bit of a cunt at times.

If you do not believe in God why would you call God a cunt?

Surely you just do not believe Hmm

YouBetterWerk · 01/05/2015 07:49

Or Science, morelike.
People tend to see Atheism as the belief in nothing at all, that all channels get shut down with no creativity but it's not really like that. In fact I find it even more amazing that a butterfly wing has formed over thousands of years, through trial and error, then some creator created it. Anyone can do that.

Vintagebeads · 01/05/2015 07:50

I believe in god,its taught me not to judge the view and beliefs of others .Which is more than can be said for some you on this thread.
I am not hurting or judging anyone by my beliefs.
Calling god a cunt because its something you don't understand or believe in makes you sound like a petulant six year old,I actually pity you.

If you had posted that Alla was a cunt this post wouldn't even be up here. How about just respecting the view of others without insulting them.

JassyRadlett · 01/05/2015 07:52

Freudians, in the same way that Voldemort is a bit of a cunt?

Except more so, because of the cultural and institutional influence of the Christian God in our society. There is a strongly popular conception of God, regardless of whether one believes.

HellBoundNothingFound · 01/05/2015 07:52

Religion is archaic and a crutch for people. God is inconsistent, horrible, mean spirited and a massive massive jebend. Would you want a leader who punished those who did not worship him? Hitler or Stalin like?

Thank fuck religion is dying in the UK. More and more people are recognising that 'good' is not just for the the godly, in fact, many realise godly is no longer so good...

Morelikeguidelines · 01/05/2015 07:53

I thought about saying or science when I wrote the post, but then wondered if science is our understanding of nature/the universe/life etc rather than those things themselves.

I tend to have my own private "religion "/ philosophy because I believe humans do have free will and consider that a religious position in itself.

HellBoundNothingFound · 01/05/2015 07:53

Vintage...you just judged those who called out your God. Awkward

JassyRadlett · 01/05/2015 07:54

(To note - I didn't say the Christian God was one. But pretending that the Christian God and the popular conception of same is something that does not affect the lives of non-believers is risible.)

JaWellNoFine · 01/05/2015 07:55

The whole Italian mafia are sitting in heaven, priest that raped children, all the evil done in the name of your God. . so many evil fuckers who are apparently in heaven because they repent to the right God. The great get out clause that is religion is what makes religion a joke.

You see you don't have to be a good person for God to love. You can be really really evil and repent on your death bed and you are forgiven. Never know of God's existence, live a morally good life, never hurt a soul and not be good enough, as you didn't 'know' about him.

So those in Nepal didn't know about this God so they are used as a lesson for the rest of us 'believers' So they are destined to hell purely by the actions of this wonderful God. Oooh. Isn't he a good god. Confused

God gets all the credit when things go well but when things go bad he is no longer all that powerful is he?

I hate seeing people on the news praising God because they survived a disaster but hey, it is not his fault that others died. He couldn't control that.

trice · 01/05/2015 08:25

I question the tale of the suffering of Jesus. He was born in a stable after his mum had been travelling for days (I can see her suffering!) To parents who had skilled labour (carpentry). He was immediately given expensive gifts. He grew up, went to a good school, learned his dads trade. He was partial to picnics, had some good friends and lots of family who loved him.

He had just enjoyed a boozy dinner party with his mates and a walk in the garden when he gets arrested. Then he is beaten, whipped and crucified which he does not bear without complaint. Nasty but not the worst thing in the world. Pretty quick really, and he knew he would respawn almost immediately.

This doesn't compare to the horrendous suffering I have seen in friends who have lost children or died of cancer.

I have to go to church to get my kids into our local school. All the inconsistency makes me cross.

Sallystyle · 01/05/2015 08:31

I can't think of anything worse than going to heaven and spending eternity there. I would be so bored.

None of my friends or family would be there as we don't repent our 'sins'. Where is the fun is that?

I would much rather just be gone.

MrsBigginsPieShop · 01/05/2015 08:31

Having a relationship with God is not carte blanche to sin and keep on sinning. Having a 'religion' or being 'religious' is not an exemption from morality. Grace is about each individual's personal relationship with God. I haven't ever said that saying 'I believe in God' is some sort of get out of jail free card. So please do not infer that my belief and faith is in some way permitting people like Jimmy Savile to do the things he did.

mrsfuzzy · 01/05/2015 08:34

why does anyone believe in something they can't see, so therefore most likely does not exist? the 'god idea' probably came about like most things, a way of explaining the natural world and it's creation before science and, dare i say it, common sense got in the way.
christians, for one, were 'threatened' with hell as a way of keeping them in line, so to speak and the 'righteous' were offered life ever lasting so it was like a very early form of brain washing to keep the masses on the side of the church and to keep the church solvent, that's why christian ideas are based on the previous pagan ones.
as for the 'all loving god', read the bible and there are so many reversals on ideas, 'thou shall not worship false idols' i.e other gods, well, that smacks of jealously for a start, so if he is jealous he must have other 'flaws', i.e doesn't care about people that much.
by the way i'm a pagan.

Chiggers · 01/05/2015 08:35

God is a narcissistic, homophobic, murderous, slavery/rape-endorsing, jealousy-ridden, temperamental, anger-ridden, misogynistic sadist. Why would anyone want to worship a god who does all that and even more horrid stuff?

FWIW, I believe that morals are the part of us that allows us to treat each other with respect and help others, so that we can ensure survival of our species.

That's my take on god and his wonderful ways. I was a Christian for 9 years. I wanted to become an atheist...............so I read the bible Wink

Sallystyle · 01/05/2015 08:35

Vintage I find it hard to respect people's religious views when their God sounds pretty evil to me.

I look at people who suffered great tragedy, look at people who think there is a godly reason for this and still claims he is all loving and nope, can't respect it.

I think it is kind of bullshit that people should be expected to respect all religious views.

It's like saying we should respect everything everyone believes even if those views are quite mean and potentially damaging. I don't respect everyone's opinion and I don't ever want to. I don't see why religion should be anymore respected than any other opinions out there.

YouBetterWerk · 01/05/2015 08:37

mrsbiggins
I wasn't inferring anything. Forgive me if I have this wrong, but you said:

we can never do anything bad enough for him not to love us i.e bad deeds.
And I asked, given that he was a devout Catholic, does this mean Jimmy Saville is currently in heaven?

I can only assume that he is, given your logic.

MrsBigginsPieShop · 01/05/2015 08:44

You have skipped over the repentance bit though.

God's love is unconditonal, but that is separate to repentance.
Being 'devout' in practice may actually mean very little in faith.

Morelikeguidelines · 01/05/2015 08:44

Um trice I'm not sure ccrucifixion is a death I would much fancy! Not really anything to do with this debate but I think it was a fairly gruesome method of execution used by the rotten Romans!

What I find interesting about your post is th at you highlight the fact that "knowing he was going to respawn almost immediately " would take alot away from the sacrifice of dying for others. I think if you were to accept the general premise of jesus' sacrificing himself for others (for the sake of argument ) I think you would have to approach it from.point of view that jesus did not know this. This would call into question whether he was God as such but I agree that a certain knowledge in a life after death would take away from the "sacrifice " in question.

Morelikeguidelines · 01/05/2015 08:45

A bit of a ramble off the point in question but I quite like theology in theory.

Mermaidhair · 01/05/2015 08:49

If you don't believe in God, if you don't like him or understand him, that's ok. There are others who do know God, who like him, and who are learning to understand him. I think we should all respect each other's beliefs.
