i know she is a bloody horrible incestuous cow bag in game of thrones but the name is so pretty!!

I like Circe. I think that's a go-er. With a more standard middle name. Theodore is Theodore James Matthew. Just have to think of something I like to go with Circe now. Love it. I'm going with it!

Good choice!

I have to admit there are a lot of names I really like from GoT - enough to seriously consider them. Given the popularity of the series I doubt seriously they'll be rare in ten years time. I'd be nervous of them dating, a la Kylie, and of the connotations of certain characters. Couldn't give a shiny shit if I'm judged but would exercise caution at the thought of my prospective dc having a hard time. But even though it's hard to believe, given how my username marks me out as a huge fan, I don't like the names because of the books - I like them because they sound lovely to me. Theon, for example, I love the name but not the character (and wouldn't choose it for the obvious potential for nasty teasing). But I adore the names:

Jorah
Eddard
Bran
Bronn
Rickon
Hodor

Ok, not the last one :) wonders if there are any little baby Hodors

holypants · 28/04/2015 20:11

I really like the name Isserley, from Michel Faber's novel Under The Skin. Unfortunately, she's an alien who harvests humans for meat, so probably won't be using it.

londonrach · 28/04/2015 20:14

Id stuggle to say the name but im dyslexic.

burgatroyd · 28/04/2015 20:18

But isn't Arya always recommended on mn?

I'd go for the Circe suggestion

florascotia · 28/04/2015 20:18

Bran is an old Celtic boy's name. It means Raven. There are famous Welsh myths about Bran.
It was also the name of Irish hero Finn MacCool's wolfhound.

fancyanotherfez · 28/04/2015 20:23

Arya sounds like lots of non GoT names though. Also, Arya is I much more morally sound character. I like the idea of Saorsie.

OttiliaVonBCup · 28/04/2015 20:27

You can't name a child Circe. Or Cercei/Cersei.

She has to live all her life with it.
It's bonkers.

spancake · 28/04/2015 20:35

I can if I like. And I will actually. If people can call their kids Dora or Ethel or Enid or Kevin, and they get by in life then I can call my daughter Circe. Sure it's unconventional but I'd rather that than her be one of 15 Ellas or Rubys or Claires or Sarahs.

I always wanted to call my boys, Seth and Rubén after the boys in Cold Comfort farm. Cersei is lovely, go for it! GOT is cult so ultimate kudos!

OttiliaVonBCup · 28/04/2015 20:47

You would rather have that.

Are you sure she would?

3littlerabbits · 28/04/2015 20:50

Saoirse (seersha) is so beautiful.

FatSwan · 28/04/2015 20:54

Meh, it's not the worst you can name your kid.

I too know a baby Khaleesi. Her mum has never watched the show-but heard about the name and liked it. Her partner watches it though, I think.

In comparison they probably think my DD's name is boring. To each's own.

I want a dog named Targaryen.

MsRinky · 28/04/2015 20:55

Our main database at work is called Circe.

spancake · 28/04/2015 21:01

I think so. She can change it if she so pleases in the future, that will be of course her choice. I know of several people who use their middle name out of preference - some more unique middle names instead of their ordinary first names.

SometimesTables · 28/04/2015 21:02

I like the sound of Circe. It's pretty. Are you sure you wouldn't want to add a 'y' and then it would make pronounciation straightforward?

Circey?

spancake · 28/04/2015 21:09

I could couldn't I. I'm toying with Cercy. Like Mercy - my wonderful great grandmother's name who I adored, but my cousin already called her daughter Layla Mercy. I dunno. Still a while to go, so will put some more thought in to it.

OP posts:
2rebecca · 28/04/2015 21:26

Circey just looks like you can't spell Circe

CadieAgain · 28/04/2015 21:30

It does. Like "Feebee"

fancyanotherfez · 28/04/2015 21:36

I've never heard of Circe, so wouldn't think Circey wasn't a name but Circe was iyswim. It would also have the advantage of actually being easier to pronounce, not a lifetime of 'Circ?' 'No, its pronounced Cer-see'

2rebecca · 28/04/2015 21:51

Anyone who has studied Greek myths even casually would know though. When she's older employers would see her CV and think "incorrectly spelt name". Why do this to your kid? Fine if she has no aspirations and will only be employed by people without any classical knowledge.
I think you need a name that she will be happy with whatever she does in life. Copies of unusual TV characters' names and wacky spellings are unnecessarily limiting.

SometimesTables · 28/04/2015 22:15

2rebecca.

What on earth are you on about? That's a ridiculous thing to say. I'd hope you were joking but unfortunately I don't think you are Shock Confused

AliceLidl · 28/04/2015 22:17

OP I said earlier that you can't name a child after a Lannister, but I take it back.

If you love the name, go for it. It's a beautiful name.

If you are persuaded to choose something similar but different though, how about Cecily?

Sparks1007 · 28/04/2015 22:35

What is interesting is that many of these posts assume the authors were only considering the English meaning of these names. Aria for example is Hebrew meaning lioness. I assume as some people have said that he liked some names and changed the spelling/pronunciation to suit his audience maybe? Other names though are unchanged.

Framboisier · 28/04/2015 22:49

Oh dear
I've just realised that I must not have any aspirations, as I have never knowingly been employed by someone with a classical education

Smile

I wouldn't personally go with Circe, but it's not awful.
She might get fed up with constantly spelling it/correcting people so decide to call herself Jane at some point though!
