i know she is a bloody horrible incestuous cow bag in game of thrones but the name is so pretty!!

SaucyJack has it - wait to see how a character develops before committing to a name.

We're planning on getting two rescue kittens in a few months and I am very tempted by GoT names. That's largely because I'd amuse myself every single day, but also because cats don't care what you call them.

I'm tempted by Cersei Lannister and Brienne of Tarth.

OTheHugeManatee · 28/04/2015 13:59

It's a pretty name, but spell it Circe rather than Cersei. Classical allusions don't really date, but Game of Thrones ones almost certainly will Hmm

CadieAgain · 28/04/2015 14:00

I know a Khaleesi. I once read that it doesn't mean "queen", but "Khal's whore" Shock because the Khaleesi could (and would) be shared with the Khal's bloodriders, plus they had no power of their own.

Won't be sharing that with the girl's Mum though.

feesh · 28/04/2015 14:04

Hazy memory here, but I'm fairly sure that cerci are parts of an insect. Maybe mouthparts?!

2rebecca · 28/04/2015 14:04

Naming your kids after current film, TV or celebrity characters is never a good move. It looks unimaginitive and chavvy

peppersaunt · 28/04/2015 14:19

Ditto 2rebecca, especially KhaleesiGrin

spancake · 28/04/2015 14:19

2rebecca that rules out LOADS of names! especially really well known ones!

OP posts:
MrsHathaway · 28/04/2015 14:35

Some names are very closely associated with a programme or film - Khaleesi, Sherlock, Bilbo.

Some names are from the real world and briefly associated with fiction. Avoiding matching sets (Bella, Jacob and Edward for triplets).

I assume the first type is what's being discussed here.

2rebecca · 28/04/2015 14:38

It was celebrities /TV characters with unusual names I meant. Things like the fad for Kylie when Neighbours first started and then Demi hyphenated something after Demi Moore 10 years or so ago.
Everyone trying to be unusual in the same way and just looking very sheepish

Do you really want to call both your children Greek names, if you have no Greek origins? (You don't say that you do, so I am assuming, but please correct me if I am wrong!) They might get a bit embarrassed and annoyed with having to explain to people that their exotic names are not in any way connected to their heritage, but were just chosen because they sounded good. For me, that would take most of the fun out of having a "cool" name.

spancake · 28/04/2015 14:40

mrshathaway - we have so far established that this particular name lies somewhere betwixt the two examples. it's a name associated with a recent fictional character (and a fairly controversial one!) but is actually a variant on a classical greek name. I have one child already with a reason ably unusual name (Theodore) and i'm not naming strictly after the character, i just like the name. I propose a spelling variant with slightly different pronounciation would be my solution.

I do have greek heritage but not incredibly recent ones.

2rebecca · 28/04/2015 14:43

You could have called her Isabelle/Isobel which could be shortened to Bella and doesn't look so star struck. I haven't read the Twilight stuff so when I saw mention of Bella and Jacob I was thinking of the Tweenies Bella, Jake and the other 2.

Unless you have read all the books, don't give your child that name!

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 28/04/2015 14:49

Do you remember the rash of Kylie's in the early 90's?

Sorry but it sounds like Sissy, which isn't a nice thing IMO.

florascotia · 28/04/2015 14:52

As others have said, Circe appears several ancient Greek stories and in many later ones. She's a clever goddess with golden eyes and a lovely voice, and a seductive, druggy, deceitful witch. Or else, (as some modern writers claim) she's a creature embodying male fantasies about beautiful-but-predatory females. The ancient Greeks probably would have pronounced her name Kerr-kay. Circe (Sir-see) is the Roman version.

Fascinating collection of ancient myths and legends about Circe here www.theoi.com/Titan/Kirke.html

In spite of Circe's story, it really is rather a pretty name.

Pagwatch · 28/04/2015 14:55

It is very like calling your child Kylie or Britany 15 years ago.

Bad .

GoStraightGoStraight · 28/04/2015 15:03

Noooo!!! My DD says she'd like to call her daughter (one day, she's not even PG yet) Cersei and she likes Khaleesi as well Hmm or for a boy she likes Jax from Sons of Anarchy. It's a terrible idea - so faddy! Luckily she's only 17 so hopefully she'll have grown up changed her mind before I am made a grandmother.

Although admittedly Cersei is very beautiful in spite of being such a wicked cow, so I can see why she is tempted. I just don't think you can pick a name with such negative connotations, it would be like choosing Hitler or Mugabe - why would you do that to your child? Confused

SevTSnape · 28/04/2015 15:18

I think Cercei is a great name. I also like Danerys. As someone who doesn't like many girl's names, if I had a daughter, I would consider either of the above.

Op, don't listen to what people are saying here. At the end of the day, she will be your daughter and its your choice what you name her. Literary references make great names. If I have kids, I will be naming them after characters from my favourite books

squoosh · 28/04/2015 15:21

I think listening to other people is a good way of avoiding a name that will become a burden.
