i know she is a bloody horrible incestuous cow bag in game of thrones but the name is so pretty!!

OP posts:

Would love to know where all these Greek mumsnetters hang out.

Cerce in Greek would be Kir-Kee.

Thymeout · 28/04/2015 15:30

But OP is not naming her dd after a favourite character. She just likes the sound of the name.

I think this is tricky, because other people will identify the name with the character. Ophelia is a v pretty name, but the only one people have heard of had a tragic end.

If there hadn't been a character in a popular series named the same, I'd say, 'Go ahead' - but it will date her and some people will have a negative association in their heads before they even meet her.

squoosh · 28/04/2015 15:31

Isn't it like Cicero in that some people pronounce it kick-er-o and others sis-a-ro?

squoosh · 28/04/2015 15:34

I remember in Goodbye Mr Chips he kicks up a fuss at being told me must adhere to the 'new' pronunciation.

HearCerseiRoar · 28/04/2015 15:40

It's a beautiful name (but she's my favourite ASOIAF/GOT character so I'm obviously biased) Wine

I did put it down as a possible on our baby name list but DP did not approve. He's a bloody Stark... Grin

florascotia · 28/04/2015 15:55

With all due respect, GOT is very dramatic, but 'literary' ??? .....And I must admit it annoys me when writers of fantasy novels/plays/computer games etc borrow perfectly good names from older stories and give them 'yooneek' spellings or else blend nice old names together to make montrosities. To me, that looks like the opposite of 'literary'. But that is just my view. Of course the OP - and anyone else - is entitled to a different opinion.

However, the original name Kirke/Circe has stood the test of time. As earlier posters have said, TV names date very quickly.

LadyDeadpool · 28/04/2015 16:15

Khaleesi is a title not a name. Irrationally annoys me to see it used as a name.

squoosh · 28/04/2015 16:18

Annoys me that anyone would name their child after the dullest character on GoT.

Bue · 28/04/2015 16:25

YANBU, it's a beautiful name! Shame about the character. I think GRRM is very talented at creating names that have a fantastical element but also have a foot in reality.

limitedperiodonly · 28/04/2015 16:28

Go for Jezebel instead OP. Just as much of a bitch but with thousands of years more heritage. She came to a bit of a sticky end though.

Or Salome or Delilah which I also love.

cingolimama · 28/04/2015 16:32

I love the name. But then I wanted to name DD Medea until DH used his veto ("darling, what if she has children").

squoosh · 28/04/2015 16:35

I love Sheba but that's even less likely to be used than Salome or Delilah even though Sheba didn't have anyone's head cut off and put on a plate.

limitedperiodonly · 28/04/2015 16:37

I'd reluctantly rule out Salome because it's hard to pronounce.

I go with Sallo-may.

Mind you, I used to think Phoebe was pronounced Fer-hobey and Imogen was Imm-O-Ghen, which sounds like a diarrhoea treatment, so people can learn.

I don't like Phoebe and Imogen BTW.

limitedperiodonly · 28/04/2015 16:39

I like Sheba too squoosh but the cat food has ruined it for me.

I really like Old Testament names though maybe not Zipporah so much.

squoosh · 28/04/2015 16:40

Bloody cats ruin everything.

AbsInTheClub · 28/04/2015 16:46

Khaleesi is a name once someone chooses it as a name for their child.

limitedperiodonly · 28/04/2015 16:49

Don't I know it. My cat tripped me on Friday night and I broke my rib against the table.

While was sprawled breathless on the floor he screamed: 'Wah!' into my face and ran off.

The next cat I get will be called Nimrod from the mighty hunter of the Old Testament.

I'm just putting it out there for the current cat to consider.

limitedperiodonly · 28/04/2015 16:50

What I mean is, Current Cat can be replaced...

squoosh · 28/04/2015 16:52

Current Cat if you don't mind me saying sounds like a twat.

limitedperiodonly · 28/04/2015 16:55

He's lovable but it is the kind of love that only a mother can have.

FretYeNotAllIsShiny · 28/04/2015 17:10

I love the name Brienne, not so keen on Cercei.

I quite like a lot of the GoT names; Theon, Eddard and Jeyne. They sound like variants of normal names, which is what they probably are. I think he's got a talent for names. Cercei probably is his version of Circe.

SaucyJack · 28/04/2015 17:18

I quite like Roose as well. Has a nice ring to it.

2rebecca · 28/04/2015 17:25

Looks like a misspelt Rose. I agree some of the names are nice but as your name probably not so nice as may result in eye rolling and "another GoT mad parent" type comments or thoughts. You can like something without inflicting it on your children

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 28/04/2015 17:38

I think of Arya being from Eragon, not GoT I have to say.

It does have a nice sound, but I would automatically spell it Circe I'm afraid.

I think you could use Circe though - I don't think Theodore is so obvious that it sounds like you're going straight down the Greek mythology route (it's not like he's called Perseus or Agamemnon!).

2rebecca · 28/04/2015 17:51

Agree with Theodore. You could always go down the Roman route with Minerva or Diana, avoiding the names more open to ridicule like Jupiter and Venus!
Venus Williams copes with Venus though, although she probably wasn't a girl other kids messed with!
