i know she is a bloody horrible incestuous cow bag in game of thrones but the name is so pretty!!

I wouldnt name a child after a VERY popular book/tv series - as there will be hundreds of them running around....

little Ayras, Sansas, Danayres (spelling) maybe not so many Cerceis,
a bit like... would you call your child Lolita?

(agreed on the naff-ness)

squoosh · 28/04/2015 12:46

Would the 'wacky' factor of Wendy been that high? She was a 'good' character whose name wasn't associated with incest and murder.

TooSpotty · 28/04/2015 12:51

My aunt, who is now in her 70s, was named Wendy after the character and I think it did cause a bit of comment, but it was also very popular at the time as a mainstream name. She married a man called Peter of course...

I've never seen GoT but Circe to me is the character from the Odyssey. I wouldn't think of her a nymph - she's a sorcerer. A pretty divisive figure at that! Will this Circe be forgotten now there's a newer homophone on the block? That's a shame.

toffeeboffin · 28/04/2015 12:52

A friend of mine called her kid Arya. Not sure if she is a GoT fan.

ChangingTiming · 28/04/2015 12:52

I love daenerys as a name! Although need to wait to see if she becomes super evil

squoosh · 28/04/2015 12:54

I think she is destined to go Super Evil. Like her dear departed bro.

flora717 · 28/04/2015 12:56

I like 'Brienne' as a name, that's in GoT

Sickoffrozen · 28/04/2015 12:59

It's not my cup of tea.

CrispyFern · 28/04/2015 13:03

Got to agree with squoosh.

GOT names are naff.

CrispyFern · 28/04/2015 13:05

I love Saoirse though, good call Bunny.

spancake · 28/04/2015 13:06

her brother has a greek name too, so the mythological thing would tie in. I'm not sure, i'll have to have a think. i'm not a fan of arya, brienne or sansa but Catelyn is nice too. i dont want to go with something game of thronesy just for the sake of it though. it really was just Cersei i liked. Or Cercei, however you spell it.

OP posts:
spancake · 28/04/2015 13:07

is Saoirse pronounced in a similar way?

OP posts:
squoosh · 28/04/2015 13:13

Saorise can be pronounced seer-sha or sare-sha.

squoosh · 28/04/2015 13:14

Saoirse even!

lottiegarbanzo · 28/04/2015 13:22

There was an episode of Jonathon Creek that featured 'the year of the Circes' a schoolgirl gang referencing the Greek mythical character. Joanna Lumley played one as an older woman. They accidentally killed another girl. Obv Jonathan got the reference Wink

Moln · 28/04/2015 13:26

Sure I read somewhere that Khaleesi was the most popular GoT name.

I have to confess to liking a lot of the names in it, but unfortunately because of it huge popularity at the moment I'd have to refrain from using them for a child.

Though the Greek goddess spelling could be a option

MrsMook · 28/04/2015 13:30

In my supply teacher days it would have caused me to pause during the register, probably resulting in an exasperated teenager correcting yet another idiot who can't say or spell their name.
I've developed a very dull taste in names Grin

Oobis · 28/04/2015 13:32

No, YANBU to like it, but I don't think a child would thank you for giving her that name. Kids can be very cruel!

glamourousgranny42 · 28/04/2015 13:33

My next cat is definitely going to be called Tyrion!

kungfupannda · 28/04/2015 13:34

The problem with it is that Cersei is known for one major thing. She's 'the one who shagged her brother' to anyone who knows anything about GoT.

expatinscotland · 28/04/2015 13:36

No. Just no.

Charlesroi · 28/04/2015 13:36

I think it's a nice name but is going to age her terribly when she's 50 and pretending to be 40

Grantaire · 28/04/2015 13:37

DH's friend called her dd Khaleesi. Cersei is marginally better in that it's at least the character's name as opposed to her imaginary title.

Skeppers · 28/04/2015 13:37

OP, have you read the books or only watched the TV series? I don't want to be 'that guy', but you may want to reserve your final decision for a teeny bit if your choice is steered by the Game of Thrones character...! Wink

Cerce is cool though. Very classical.

spancake · 28/04/2015 13:52

is Cerce pronounced differently to Cercei? x
