Stuck in with a broken shoulder bloody friends on a loop on comedy central I can't help but notice their myriad character flaws that passed me by in the show's heyday.
Ross...whiney, needy, jealous,pompous, controlling asshat.
Monica...shrill, controlling, ocd over competitive harpy.
Phoebe...selfish, weird, domineering hippy.
Rachel....entitled, manipulative, materialistic, self absorbed princess.
Joey....thick, sexist, self deluded meathead who leeched off chandler for ten years
And to make matters worse poor chandler was always the one left out and considered the least attractive Grin boy I need to get back to work soon!!Confused

Loved Phoebe and Joey. They should have ended up together.

Disliked Monica and Ross. Way too competitive and not really funny!

Rachel was a bit annoying and a bit flirty with every male!

Liked Chandler.

Burke1 · 25/04/2015 20:21

Seriously confused with the people who think that Ross was "controlling". Are you sure you've been watching the same Friends tv series as me?

Why I Dislike Ross Geller by Ana Mardoll

Totality22 · 25/04/2015 20:33

Just wanted to pop on again and say that the last episode of Friends was aired 11 years ago less a few weeks so a lot of the content has dated and is not as politically correct as it would be if it was aired today.

Damn, now I am over thinking it!

Mumoftwoyoungkids · 25/04/2015 20:36

Friends is on Netflix???

Yay!

I actually think that Ross is pretty nice to Susan considering she was the OW who went after a married woman and broke up her marriage. Ross then had to put up with watching his newborn baby go home with her. And she wanted the baby to have her name!?!

KatieScarlettreregged · 25/04/2015 20:36

BarberShop Quartet episode was the one where Ross was outed as a controlling fuckwit.
Chandler and Monica? Nononono they were like brother and sister, just wrong.
Phoebe was a bitch, remember her dumping Mikes girlfriend for him?
Monica should have married Richard. Chandler should have married Janice, she was my favourite.
The one with the Routine was the best episode, even though Elle Whatserface, the worst actress ever was in it.
Joey and Rachel made me cringe. Neither of them were good enough actors to make that relationship believable.
Ross should have held on to Mona and never let go.
Rachel should have married the divine Joshua.
Series 10 should have never seen the light of day.
I have watched Friends far too often.

TheRealAmandaClarke · 25/04/2015 20:37

I do't think Ross was especially controlling. But he went ott with the Mark thing and I think he was skating on thin moral ice with the "on a break" line

I think Susan was awful because I viewed her as the "other person" in a relationship. It pissed me off that she thought Carol and Ross' baby was also "her baby" and ought to have her surname.
I thoght she was rude and unsympathetic to Ross who had done nothing wrong, other than not be a woman.
She was funny at times though.

TheRealAmandaClarke · 25/04/2015 20:38

X post with mumoftwoyoungkids

AmysTiara · 25/04/2015 20:43

Aah I liked Ross. His scenes were the funniest. I liked Monica too.

Phoebe did my head in though.

ThisFenceIsComfy · 25/04/2015 20:51

Fuck Phoebe. I wanted to marry Mike. Still bitter

IUseAnyName · 25/04/2015 20:51

Pheebs is my fave, but in the old ones, when she was more ditsy and hippy. Monica was also my fave in the older ones, she was more real. I hate her in the new ones, she's just over the top acting.

I like rachel. I used to like ross, but not in the new ones. Same with chandler, he was my fave until the london stuff happened.

In fact, I loved loved loved friends until Emily came in and ruined it all! She cursed the cast!

MrsTedCrilly · 25/04/2015 21:06

I'm on a friends binge too! It's so easy to watch and still very funny. I was thinking this myself the other day.. Rachel, Monica and Joey are all annoying, Ross is whiney.. I do love Chandler and Phoebe. But it all makes them entertaining to watch! I wouldn't want them as a group of friends.

TheRealAmandaClarke · 25/04/2015 21:10

I am now reminded of the Brad Pitt episod and cannot forgive him for leaving Rachel Jennifer

TulipOHare · 25/04/2015 21:15

Just looked on Netflix and it's not there..?

Bogeyface · 25/04/2015 21:27

I think the "what could have been" episode had it right.

Ross and Phoebe together, they could keep their demanding whiny selfish self obsessed-ness between them.

Monica and Joey together, he basically wants a mum he can fuck and she wants to be in charge of everything so they are both happy.

Chandler and Rachel together, similar privileged but fucked up back grounds, both worked hard to change their lives for the better, both see and accept their flaws.

I think the "sell the spare baby" thing for Chandler was appalling writing, the character as he was up until that point would never have done that. He would have simply taken it in his stride and ran with it.

Bogeyface · 25/04/2015 21:32

I agree that Susan was vile.

Can you imagine how "funny" it would be if Carol had gone off with another man who demanded her baby have his surname and not Ross's?

Not very funny at all, in fact almost as not very funny as Susan was.

wickedwaterwitch · 25/04/2015 21:34

We've watched a few of these recently and found them quite funny still but ha ha at this thread, some good points here!

chaletdays · 25/04/2015 21:36

I couldn't stand Carol. Entitled cow.

I agree that there's no way Chandler would have wanted to abandon the twin. He was the nicest of the bunch. Ross was whiney and needy, Rachel pampered and shallow, Monica a control freak, Joey totally without morals or depth (or brains) and Phoebe as mad as a box of frogs.

Loved that show Smile

chaletdays · 25/04/2015 21:38

Sorry, I meant Susan was an entitled cow. Nasty piece of work.

Bogeyface · 25/04/2015 21:40

I have a theory that the only reason Monica and Chandler got together was because they were both well into their thirties and desperate.

She was prepared to put up with him being a bit flakey and daft in order to have babies and he was prepared to put up with her uber controlling ways in order to have sex regularly!

I am sure that had Joey been the one she shagged at the wedding then she would have been marrying him instead!

Bogeyface · 25/04/2015 21:42

However.....I loved Jennifer Saunders as Emilys mum.

I thought the whole "Repressed miserable English marriage" was a stereotype too far, and lets gloss over the cringeworthy moment with a certain former royal, but I loved JS, she played a crap script just right!

But then she is my girl crush and when I grow up I want to be like her 42 next birthday, there is still time!!

Lweji · 25/04/2015 21:43

I have watched the whole series recently again, and there was an episode where Monica and Chandler almost got together. There was something going on.
There was a reason why they slept together at the wedding... Not with anyone else.

Bogeyface · 25/04/2015 21:44

Yeah there was, Matt Perry was on the writing team by then and wanted to biggest storyline!

Bogeyface · 25/04/2015 21:44

the not to

GingerLDN · 26/04/2015 11:14

Why would anyone like Susan? She is the worst, a complete cow! Monica and Richard should've lived happily ever after. Never liked Mike but didn't like Phoebe after the first few seasons either. I like all the main characters aside from Phoebe. They were all better the first few seasons, before they turned into caricatures of themselves.
