Stuck in with a broken shoulder bloody friends on a loop on comedy central I can't help but notice their myriad character flaws that passed me by in the show's heyday.
Ross...whiney, needy, jealous,pompous, controlling asshat.
Monica...shrill, controlling, ocd over competitive harpy.
Phoebe...selfish, weird, domineering hippy.
Rachel....entitled, manipulative, materialistic, self absorbed princess.
Joey....thick, sexist, self deluded meathead who leeched off chandler for ten years
And to make matters worse poor chandler was always the one left out and considered the least attractive Grin boy I need to get back to work soon!!Confused

Shark porn and Vegas hand twin aren't covered in glory either...terrible plots

totality a lot of my favourite episodes are Ross heavy too.

The one with the Dance routine, (these are the proper titles, I don't think Grin) the one where he wears those leather trousers, the one where he gets a tan and the thanksgiving one with Brad Pitt.

I'm sorry, I don't care if they're all tosspots, I LOVE Friends. I probably wouldn't be mates with them in real life though and I think they treated Emily appallingly Wink. Right there is an example of Rachel's princess behaviour.

avocadotoast · 25/04/2015 17:08

I hate Ross Geller so much it makes my blood boil to even think about him. He's just so needy, whiny, emotionally immature... Just awful!

I think on the whole Rachel and Chandler are ok. The others can suck it.

MrsPeterQuill · 25/04/2015 17:09

Whoops, aren't the correct title obvs. Oh and I hated the shark porn one as well. And the one where Rachel's boss (doesn't) try to buy her baby.

googoodolly · 25/04/2015 17:14

Emily was ridiculously controlling though, and never came across as being a very nice person.

Sparklingbrook · 25/04/2015 17:20

Patsy Kensit turned down the role of Emily. i think she may have been quite good. Certainly better than HB, who I like as an actress but not on Friends.

LIZS · 25/04/2015 17:22

Am having to watch the reruns as dc have just discovered Friends! Comedy Central miss out some key episodes though

WireCat · 25/04/2015 17:26

I hated Emily. Comedy Central do my head in, by missing out episodes.

SanctimoniousWitches · 25/04/2015 17:28

ross was so annoying. Chandler is the most recognisable as the good guy buthe jokes about watching porn or monica is all cool girl about him watching porn. some mightn't think that's a big deal but it's being forced on the viewer THIS IS NORMAL and that annoys me.

CloserToFiftyThanTwenty · 25/04/2015 17:28

Emily was awful and deserved to marry Ross

Rachel was always too good for him

The Gellers and Richard were my favourites Smile

SanctimoniousWitches · 25/04/2015 17:29

emily was annoying. they had to make her annoying because Wink all english people are uptight and annoying. all of them yes.

SinglePringle · 25/04/2015 17:30

If you watch the earlier episodes, you see a lot of Monica and Chandler looking out for each other. Wonder if the writers always planned for them to get naked.

Totality22 · 25/04/2015 17:32

Mike was my fave character.

Thurlow · 25/04/2015 17:34

I like Ross. I don't care if everyone else thinks he was borderline EA, I loved him. He had some of the best moment ("Pivot! PIVOT!") and I always felt David Schwimmer and Jennifer Aniston had the best comic timing.

Loved Chandler the most though. Did anyone ever watch Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip? He basically played Chandler, but if life had gone well for him. It was surprisingly hot.

tilliebob · 25/04/2015 17:34

Bollocks! Totally forgot it was on Netflix now loses the whole of tomorrow and probably my day off on Monday

Thurlow · 25/04/2015 17:40

Oh, plus Ross got this line, which is pretty much my favourite line from the show:

"No, no wait, no, no, an eagle flew in. Landed on the stove and caught fire. The baby, seeing this, jumps across the apartment to the mighty bird's aid. The eagle, however, misconstrues it as an act of aggression and grabs the baby in its talons. Meanwhile the faucet fills the apartment with water. Baby and bird still ablaze are locked in a death grip, swirling around in the whirlpool that fills the apartment."

Phoebe really did my nut most of the time.

dragdownthemoon · 25/04/2015 17:43

Monica should have married Richard. The Monica and Chandler story line irritated me a lot.

Phoebe is a bitch. Always putting herself before her friends, stitching people up, she is rude and arrogant and annoying. I dislike her.

Ross is a comical character to watch but would be a pain the the arse as a friend, I agree with the OP that Ross is just too whiny. Rachel could do sooooo much better ;)

Joey is a sexist pig. He has no respect for women, he is thick and annoying. He is a sponge and should get a proper job and realise he is not a good actor. He should try and keep his willy in his pants. I couldnt be friends with him.

Rachel is the character I most enjoyed watching evolve. She has a massive learning curve and establishes herself well, getting a good job, being a good mum, a good friend. I think I could be friends with the later series version of Rachel.

They all deserve each other, really. But... Monica should have ended up with Richard, Chandler with Cathy, Ross with Emily, Rachel with Tag, Phoebe with David (argh, the whole Barbados Mike/David thing pissed me right off, fuck off Mike, Phoebe and David were always destined to be together, he was always the One that Got Away, Mike should have stayed away, I was gutted when Phoebe chose Mike over David!!!)

Joey either needed to change his attitude to women or he deserved to be alone.

I love Friends though lol

TheRealAmandaClarke · 25/04/2015 17:45

I loved Phoebe
Loved Chandler and Joey too
But I think Chandler was more sleezy than some ppl think. A bit pre occupied with porn and strippers imo.

TheRealAmandaClarke · 25/04/2015 17:46

Oh love Rachel too

TheHappinessTrap · 25/04/2015 17:47

I thought this at the time OP! And when I see newer comedies that have come out I think they've exaggerated that dynamic even further. What's funny in a tv sitcom I would LOATHE in a friend or family member.

Lazarusbal · 25/04/2015 17:49

Wasn't chandler in every bit where porn was mentioned. Don't just mean the shark porn stuff where Monica was cool girl personified or the tape he stole from Richard's apartment and watched with joey thinking it was Monica. All the casual "oh let's watch porn" bits were surely Joey and chandler.

DoJo · 25/04/2015 17:49

They were all awful - if you can make it through the first minute of this, they explain why: www.cracked.com/video_19324_6-friends-characters-who-are-actually-terrible-people.html

Lazarusbal · 25/04/2015 17:51

I am however with totality22 waay to much overthinking going on here Grin

Lazarusbal · 25/04/2015 17:51

too

Doggygirl · 25/04/2015 17:52

I loved the series - I don't miss it, though.

I feel sorry for Monica - the highly strung woman who spent a miserable girlhood as "the fat kid". Her mother is poisonous to her and her favouritism towards the smug and spoiled Ross is shocking.

Ross - well, he is always the victim and takes himself very seriously. He is a little boy who is still playing with dinosaurs. He engages sympathy only because he is hopeless with women and, some of the time, it isn't his fault. Carol's girlfriend is horrible to Ross - gloating about the influence the besotted Carol allows her to have over the odious Ben.

Rachel - I liked her. She could have been horrible, but she had a sweetness about her.

Chandler - my favourite. Very funny.

Phoebe - so annoying! Hated the kookiness - perhaps it is more geared towards American humour.

Joey - a lech and glutton who only gets away with his grotesque antics because he is a thick pillock.
