To wish dangerous dog breeds and all breeds closely resembling them were banned in UK?

There are so many nice friendly breeds, why chose a breed that was developed for aggression and fighting? I know individual dogs have different temperaments, but if they were selectively bred for bull and bear baiting, how can they make good pets?

Pit bulls (illegal in UK) are frequently kept illegally and passed off as Staffy-crosses until the police find them.

I think they should ban all dobermans, rottweilers, staffordshire bull terriers, malamutes, huskies, german shepherds and any other dog with aggressive genetics, plus all the breeds that closely resemble them. I frequently see these breeds in local park, off the lead, running amongst small children!

My seven stone Rottweiller is a dangerous dog. When he sits on my lap on the sofa his elbows are bloody sharp. When its dark and he's fallen asleep by my feet it is easy to trip over him. When he gets a pigs ear treat his farts can remove your eyebrows. When the chickens get territorial in the garden and he comes running back to me to protect him he doesn't notice if the french doors are open or closed.

Hmm

I don't read the 'popular' press Onlylovers, but in a wider sense I can see how that would influence those who do.

I'm not talking about a council estate, just a rough little town at the arse end of nowhere. By rough I mean people have their arguments in the street, often about drugs.

I live here too you know. All we have are some stupid chickens and even stupider rabbits. Perhaps I need to get myself one of these. Everyone else has got one.

The reason there are so many in rescues is because idiots believe their reputation, get one in their desire to have a 'hard' dog then discover they're actually big softies.

+1

ODFOD is THE best insult I've ever heard!

Our Springer bit my DS1 when she first arrived 4 years ago. It was from fear, not aggression, I think, and we've spent 4 years training her very intensely, and teaching the DC's how to behave toward her, not leaving her with them, not giving her the opportunity to do it again. Our vet said we had two choices; PTS or masses of training. It's paid off, she's a great dog and a fabulous pet. Doesn't mean I trust her 100% though, and she's not left with them.

The second she showed aggression to us or the DC's we'd rethink the situation, but to blame a breed rather than the owner/trainer is such an easy opt-out isn't it? Saves looking any further as to why dogs attack.

Andrewofgg · 21/04/2015 17:22

formeerbabe when you say Children and dogs are really not comparable you are nearly right.

They are not comparable at all. Children are our future. Pet dogs (at least in towns) are at best a nuisance and at worst a menace and they are jsut not needed.

Is it not a real hassle always having to make sure the dog is never left alone with the kids?

WindMeUpAndLetMeGo · 21/04/2015 17:25

You are not only BU, but also very ignorant too.

I have 2 gsds and they are loving, loyal amazing animals.

I'm actually quite stunned I don't know what to say, quite unusual for me

SoonToBeMrsB · 21/04/2015 17:26

I had a staffy who was an adorable big lump and loved nothing more than bell rubs and naps on the couch. I now have a "cute", "family friendly" Jack Russell who is an absolute arsehole and has a tendency to bark at children and grab the trouser legs of strangers as they pass.

tabulahrasa · 21/04/2015 17:26

"Is it not a real hassle always having to make sure the dog is never left alone with the kids?"

It's really what all dog owners should do...and no, you just get the dog to follow you if you leave the room, dogs are much easier to train than children.

SoonToBeMrsB · 21/04/2015 17:26

belly rubs*

Koalafications · 21/04/2015 17:26

Really weird how defensive people can get over a breed of dog,..

No, people just get frustrated with the ignorance about certain dog breeds. It's quite tiring having to educate the fuckwads of the world.

ItsAllKickingOffPru · 21/04/2015 17:27

My dog has just spent a happy day with Malamutes, Dobermanns, Rottweilers and Staffies at a dog day care.

I believe there was a slight altercation with a terrier but the 'dangerous' dogs? No problem.

SnakeyMcBadass · 21/04/2015 17:28

Huh. Your list would allow my aunt's shitzu, a bitey bad tempered fucker, a neighbour's lab that escaped and ran up the street biting everyone that approached it, and my very own Bastard Spaniel that wants to fight every dog he meets larger than a chihuahua. Pretty dogs can be arseholes, too, OP.

plannedshock · 21/04/2015 17:29

Grew up with a staffy, own a boxer, family have lots of "guard" breeds. I have been bitten on the face before....by a cocker spaniel. You dear are a knob.

wecanmanagenow · 21/04/2015 17:29

I've had both a rottweiler and a shih tzu, the rottweiler was the nicest friendliest dog ever great with my children and terrified of small dogs. My shihtzu is hard work always jumping on the children it took alot of hard work to stop the behaviour. In my opinion a whole breed can't be blamed for the actions of some dogs.

WindMeUpAndLetMeGo · 21/04/2015 17:30

The reason so many of the dogs in your list are in rescue is because arseholes over breed them, making them produce a litter every season because they are the current "in" dog for neds and chavs.

Pups are then rehomed when people realise a dog is actually hard work, or they can't train them to how they want or they simply become bored of them

GraysAnalogy · 21/04/2015 17:30

My mums dog saved her from committing suicide. Despite having three kids, he was there for her all the time, depended on her, cheered her up, was there when she woke up and was there when she went to sleep. Was there when she was ill and wanted to die. Was there when she thought about ending it all. Despite therapy, medications all sorts of intervention - he was the one who gave her something to live for.

They're not needed are they andrew. Tell that to my DM.

Marmite27 · 21/04/2015 17:31

I'll tell my colleague he has to get rid of his German shepherd guide dog then shall I?

sparechange · 21/04/2015 17:31

Children and dogs are really not comparable
No, but ignorant and baseless judgments about what they say about parental capabilities are very much comparable.

If some idiot starts suggesting that certain breeds are child killers, and not safe to have as family pets, you can see how that is going to grate for someone who has one as a family pet?
Just like when they are told that their SEN diagnosis is a cover for bad parenting.

mamato3luvleys · 21/04/2015 17:33

My family dog is a staffie and she is lovely she might look scary to people who don't know her but she is the softest lovable pet I have ever owned (and my nana had a Yorkie for 15 years) she lies in the sun with my ds2 she runs n plays with my other children and she's never harmed anyone(even in the park off her leader!) Shock

rebelfor · 21/04/2015 17:47

YABVU. Every dog has the potential to bite. Staffies are the best breed of dog I've had, fantastic temperament, and great with kids.

Downtheroadfirstonleft · 21/04/2015 17:49

OP there are more people bitten by Labradors than any other single breed. Ban them too?

Deed not breed.

ParkingFred · 21/04/2015 17:57

I feel sorry for staffies, they're ugly (imo) and lots of thugs seem to own them. In my town, in the er, less desirable area they can usually be seen walking along side some shirtless oik, no lead but big ol' studded collar. It was here that I saw one such poor dog run across the road (saw a cat) and get hit by a car Sad. The dog seemed OK, but the owner then walloped it with the bloody lead he should have had on it Confused

I don't know anyone I'd rl that owns one, but on MN, loads of people seem to love them, so I reckon they're OK.

ShouldIworryornothelp · 21/04/2015 18:05

These aren't my dogs but how can you say dogs with these smiles are ugly?
