To wish dangerous dog breeds and all breeds closely resembling them were banned in UK?

There are so many nice friendly breeds, why chose a breed that was developed for aggression and fighting? I know individual dogs have different temperaments, but if they were selectively bred for bull and bear baiting, how can they make good pets?

Pit bulls (illegal in UK) are frequently kept illegally and passed off as Staffy-crosses until the police find them.

I think they should ban all dobermans, rottweilers, staffordshire bull terriers, malamutes, huskies, german shepherds and any other dog with aggressive genetics, plus all the breeds that closely resemble them. I frequently see these breeds in local park, off the lead, running amongst small children!

Staffies are a breed particularly recommend for children because of their good nature. I guess the only issue with big powerful dogs are that they are likely to do more damage if they do go for you.

Those smiles!

I have a very handsome dog, but he has never smiled.

Coyoacan · 21/04/2015 18:15

Not a dog-owner but I love dobermans and rottweilers. Well at least the ones I have known. In the 70s all dobermans were dangerous, because in those days it was considered to be the most dangerous breed and so there is a certain type of person that seeks them out, the type of person who should never be allowed to have children or animals. But by the end of the eighties the only dobermans I ever met were big pooches. Same happened with rottweillers.

Staffs are known for their smile. Have a Google and let your heart melt Grin

Everyone is right about deed not breed, etc.

But, while I'm sure that everyone here with staffies/rotties/dobermans etc has one of the soppy, lovely nanny-dog types, it is undeniable that this particular breed has become more and more of a weapon-dog, particularly in urban areas over the last decade. It's part of the very reason why so many end up in rescue centres. Stupid bloody idiots buying a puppy from a bloke in the pub, never training it responsibly, then getting rid of it when it's a year old and out of control. It is also true that staffies in particular are more likely to be intolerant of other dogs.

And it is also undeniable that the damage caused by a dog with a large, muscular powerful jaw (especially when trained not to let go) is going to do a whole lot more damage than a nip from e.g. a yorkshire terrier.

However YABU.

Sorry to say if you look at serious dog bite fatalities in the US then yes GSD, Pitbull, Doberman, Husky etc do come out higher in the statistics so there is no getting away from that infact a couple of US states have banned GSDs.

debricassartcleary · 21/04/2015 18:26

I would like to add my favourite dog is a Boxer. I just wouldn't take the risk with young children. A boxer can hold down cattle and see off bears no prob.Grin

ThatBloodyWoman · 21/04/2015 18:30

YABU.
My old gsd was the gentlest dog I have ever known.
Whereas my elderly cross breed years ago was a cantankerous old thing.
(But I loved her)

I love to watch the black lab owning pearl clutchers leap out if my way as I go for a run with my staffy. He's usually having the time of his life, grin-tastic Grin

My dad (gun dog owner himself) enjoys taking the staff to the beach because he likes to wind people up that he's a drug dealer or some such Smile

No need to feel sorry for this Staffy Parking he's vair middle class.

merrymouse · 21/04/2015 18:39

It's just not practical. GSD's and Staffies with good owners are lovely.

On the other hand a jack russell can do huge amounts of damage to a child. No dog is really completely safe and they all should be treated with respect.

Also, what do you do about cross breeds and mongrels?

The legislation is difficult enough to enforce at the moment. Extending it to beloved, well mannered family pets like the Staffies I meet when I'm walking my dog just wouldn't be enforceable.

It would also give people a false impression that there are guaranteed safe dogs who will put up with anything.

BlaiddDrwg · 21/04/2015 18:50

Dangerous dog my arse. Staffie's are all about how they are raised. They do not have a locking jaw that is bollocks made up by the likes of The Daily Mail And people who don't know their arse from their elbow.?

YABVU

There is no such thing as "locking jaws" Hmm

Do educate yourself before spouting scaremongering shite Biscuit

WindMeUpAndLetMeGo · 21/04/2015 19:03

Debri as an earlier PP stated a lot of bites by smaller breed dogs are not reported.

Please tell me the States that GSDs are banned and should I be in America I will be sure not to go to them.

ItsAllKickingOffPru · 21/04/2015 19:06

Yy, ThursdayLAst. My Mum loves walking my DB's Staffy in his leather harness and watching judgemental asshats scatter out of her path Grin

How others see a staffy

geekymommy · 21/04/2015 19:10

In the US, where I am, what really is correlated with aggression in dogs is not being spayed or neutered, much more so than breed. Something like 90-95% of fatal dog attacks (in 2005 and 2006) involved unneutered male dogs. More oversight of dog breeders and others who own unneutered male dogs might be a better answer here.

Anything with teeth can bite.

Doesn't matter what breed.

Hth.

sweetkitty · 21/04/2015 19:28

OP are you related to an elderly gentleman who walks his dog where I walk mine (breed to chase and keep lions at bay) he's sheets telling me about the pack of Staffies who roam the pack attacking children "you know they can rip a child's throat out" and recently told me a pit bull attacked his dog recently and he had to fight itv off with a stick!!!

WindMeUpAndLetMeGo · 21/04/2015 19:33

Sweetkitty, while licensing would be upheld by the majority, the people who most need it would avoid it. There are plenty of illegal dogs in the UK and little is done about it

Lara2 · 21/04/2015 19:33

OP - your post is so ridiculous I had to read it twice! "aggressive genetics" - seriously???
Well if that's the case, let's destroy all the Scandinavians because they're descended from Vikings who and therefore have "aggressive genetics". No less stupid than your argument! Hmm

WindMeUpAndLetMeGo · 21/04/2015 19:33

Sorry that should have been to Sovery
