To wish dangerous dog breeds and all breeds closely resembling them were banned in UK?

There are so many nice friendly breeds, why chose a breed that was developed for aggression and fighting? I know individual dogs have different temperaments, but if they were selectively bred for bull and bear baiting, how can they make good pets?

Pit bulls (illegal in UK) are frequently kept illegally and passed off as Staffy-crosses until the police find them.

I think they should ban all dobermans, rottweilers, staffordshire bull terriers, malamutes, huskies, german shepherds and any other dog with aggressive genetics, plus all the breeds that closely resemble them. I frequently see these breeds in local park, off the lead, running amongst small children!

Oh well I have 2 German Shepherds.....never once have they showed aggression to my 4 DC's. I grew up with a Cavalier King Charles and it was the nastiest wee dog, it was PTS in the end as it attacked constantly.

GemmaTeller · 21/04/2015 16:30

oooohhhhh........

my very first mumsnet ODFOD

with your stupid scaremongering ignorant comments.

GraysAnalogy · 21/04/2015 16:31

You know what dog goes for me the most and is a mean little ratbag? My friends Chihuahua.

You know what dogs have only ever shown me kindess? Boxers, bulldogs, staffs, pitbills, dobermans...

Keep your ignorant, uneducated rantings to yourself. Better yet, do some reading instead of carrying on being as described.

This little dude's breed was bred for bulls, he himself is scared of cats. So do fuck off.

I'm going to just assume you're trolling, because if you're not, you're being ridiculous.

I'm not particularly a "dog person" and don't have a dog, but even I know that staffies are generally friendly. Also one of the nicest/least aggressive dogs I've known was a pit bull (not in the UK). The only thing he regularly endangered were tea towels.

Stinkersmum · 21/04/2015 16:33

Yabvu and a bit stupid too Confused

Welshmaenad · 21/04/2015 16:33

I used to have dobermanns. Soft as butter and very well trained.

Conversely, I recently had my finger fractured by a bite from a pug. Can we ban those instead?

formerbabe · 21/04/2015 16:35

I agree with you op....there must be a reason so many staffies are owned by undesirable types.

fattymcfatfat · 21/04/2015 16:35

I had two Rottweilers growing up. not once did they harm any of us and I now have a lovely long haired German shepherd who wouldn't hurt a fly, including my 1 yo DD who tries to climb all over him and pull his ears (obviously I don't let her do this but she tries!) andy 6 yo DS who was once a curious baby. my dog actually led at the bottom of the stairs to cushion DS when he fell once. dangerous my arse

OnlyLovers · 21/04/2015 16:37

What rubbish.

honeyroar · 21/04/2015 16:38

I'm assuming you're trolling or simply stupid.

Personally I wish all owners of dogs trained to be status symbols or aggressive could be put down or castrated so they can't reproduce.

The softest, kindest dogs I ever owned were a staffie cross and a German shepherd. Nowadays I have two Labradors and they are much more aggressive.

Stinkersmum · 21/04/2015 16:38

formerbabe and that's the problem - the stupid idiot owners, not the dog.

OP this is the second twatty thread you've started in as many days after a nave change. Go play with the traffic instead.

Charlotte3333 · 21/04/2015 16:38

What's an ODFOD?

We had a doberman and then a rottweiler when I was growing up. Kindest, most friendly dogs I've ever met. We now have a rescue springer spaniel with a bit of a rough history and of all the dogs I've ever met she's the one I'd trust least, because she's unpredictable.

Breed my arse, it's how you raise them. Only reason spaniel is still in our home with our two children is because she's proven herself willing to train and learn.

Stinkersmum · 21/04/2015 16:39

Name not nave

Stinkersmum · 21/04/2015 16:39

I totally agree.

Any dog on this planet no matter how friendly has the capacity to snap and bite.

A dog with larger teeth and powerful jaws will do more damage.

It terrifies me when people refuse to admit some dogs will have been bred to attack, protect and fight, whilst other breeds are there as lap dogs and companions. They all have their personality, but the innate inner breeding will reflect their purpose and they will always have it in them.

Instead of people with dangerous dog breed insisting how friendly they were,. I would rather they said " yes this dog is powerful, capable of nasty damage and I understand no matter how friendly i think he is, how much I love him, at the end of the day he is a dog. Therefore I will always hold back 10% of trust and treat accordingly.

SevTSnape · 21/04/2015 16:40

I say this as a cat lover:

You are being so very unreasonable!

You have the same mentality of someone who thinks all black people are criminals and need to be shot.

Please rethink your sweeping statement. Thanks

emwithme · 21/04/2015 16:41

I've been bitten/nipped by dogs twice. Once by a toy poodle (evil little dogs generally) and once (really nasty nip on the achilles tendon) by a chihuahua.

My brother had a rottie who was the softest sod in the history of the world (although she did once catch a burglar because he sat in her chair and she wouldn't move off him until she got fusses), another brother had a staffie - her only vice was shredding tights as she got excited and jumped up and down!

I'd be more tempted to agree with banning bad dog owners.

SingingHinnies · 21/04/2015 16:41

typical bs from someone who believes the press.

Ive got a 10 yr old staffie, loves dogs and other people, iv'e got a 4yr old staffie cross, loves kids and other people, iv'e got a yorkie i wouldn't trust at all with strange kids.

Any dog can be dangerous, google dog attack followed by poodle, lab, greyhound, alsation, husky. You will find articles about all sorts of breeds but non that make the national press with a photo of a snarling vicious dog attached

Banning dogs just makes them more appealing to dog fighters and people who want them as a status symbol making the problem worse on already buckling rescues and pounds, because of your attitude 1000's of staffies up and down the UK are being destroyed due to overbreeding and irresposible owners, people don't want them because of the BS you have spouted in your op

Educate yourself about them starting by reading this

Then this

And stop spouting rubbish

Costacoffeeplease · 21/04/2015 16:41

I'll go for stupid rather than trolling, just extremely stupid

OhGiveItARest · 21/04/2015 16:41

Even if a dog was bred to fight bulls and bears, that means that the only owners they MIGHT not be suitable for - I stress the MIGHT - are bulls and bears.

Given that bulls and bears tend not to seek pets, YABU.

OnlyLovers · 21/04/2015 16:42

Roses, a good dog owner would say that about their dog whatever breed it was.

And dog bites/attack numbers do not correlate with the size of their teeth or how powerful their jaws are.

RosesareSublime · 21/04/2015 16:42

who do you think are the most victims of dog bites in a and e ?

The family pet who never before hurt a fly.

SingingHinnies · 21/04/2015 16:42

Pit bulls (illegal in UK) are frequently kept illegally and passed off as Staffy-crosses until the police find them.

There are 1000's of legally owned pitbulls in the UK who have been excempted
