AIBU to not want my ds to have bubble baths

I have tried all the nicer no so chemically bubble bath and it just doesn't really bubble and it's quite expensive. So I just don't do bubble bath. I refuse to sit my ds in a bath full of chemicals. It's not like he asks for it.
But my dh pours shampoo Angry into the bath to froth it up. Argghhh. Ds has slightly dry skin and it makes it worse.
But AIBU?

YANBU as your DS has dry skin made worse by bubbles. Bubble bath products are usually v high in Sodium Laureth Sulphate which makes the bubbles but also strips your skin and causes ezcema.

Clearly for many people it doesn't and they enjoy their bubble baths.

However for those it does it's a nightmare and should be avoided. I'd suggest you avoid anything with SLS in it (which will probably include the offending shampoo your DH is using).

My kids don't have bubbles. Or shampoo. And we brush teeth with bentonite clay! Everyone is very clean. That stuff has obviously been marketed very well. We do put epsom salts in the bath sometimes, and essential oils make it nice, but the whole bubble thing is unnecessary.

My dc all had eczema. None of them have had bubble bath, ever. But their eczema is well under control and they do not itch, so it seems a good Plan.

DaveMinion · 21/04/2015 08:25

another vote for E45 junior. I use it myself. Its an emolliant but also bubbles really well. My skin is amazing since I started using it.

Jux · 21/04/2015 08:29

I loathe bubble baths - why on earth do you want to have a layer of cold bubbles? I did used to sometimes give dd bubble baths using child products but couldn't afford it often. DD, now a teen, prefers Lush-type stuff or just some drops of White Musk oil in her bath now. No bubbles in sight. (If I'm given bubbly stuff I put it in after I've run the bath so there are no bubbles.)

Kewcumber · 21/04/2015 08:30

Just in case you missed it earlier even the not very bubbly SLS free shower/bath gels bubble quite nicely with a sponge or a puff thingie

Hakluyt · 21/04/2015 08:38

"the whole bubble thing is unnecessary."

Of course it's unnecessary!

Sootgremlin · 21/04/2015 08:45

E45 junior and Johnson Top to Toe baby bath are sls free I think and bubble a bit. With some furious mixing. Both mine have been ok with those but don't use them all the time. Wait till the e45 is on offer though, it is £££.

Focusfocus · 21/04/2015 08:46

Lush is renowned for it's use of both sodium laureth sulfate and fragrance/parfum both of which I suspect you wish to avoid.

Why don't you get yourself a bottle of Neals Yard Remedies in scented organic vegetable based liquid soap - it can be used as shampoo, cleanser, bubble bath, hand wash, anything. It's about £6.50 for a bottle, so on the pricey side.

And maybe get a baby safe essential oil like lavender off amazon for £3 or so?

That would be chemical free, calming and bubbly and lightly fragranced.

Focusfocus · 21/04/2015 08:47

Unscented* I meant

Branleuse · 21/04/2015 08:52

anything with SLS in it makes me itch, so not having itchy skin doesnt make me feel particularly deprived.
I make do with less bubbles but i still enjoy baths.

GingerPuddin · 21/04/2015 08:53

If bubbles are out you can add a crushed vitamin (can't remember which) and get a black light and have glow in the dark water in the bath. Google glow in the dark bath and it explains the process.

Penfold007 · 21/04/2015 09:09

My DD has eczema the dermatologist suggested I use Dove hand wash, shower wash and bubble bath. Works great for DD.

ThatBloodyWoman · 21/04/2015 09:12

I get fed up with all the unecessary stuff our children are exposed to also.
Its nigh on impossible to cut it all out,but I'm a bubble reducer....

Sootgremlin · 21/04/2015 09:21

It's a new parenting style. I can see it on the mummy blogs now. I'm a cloth-nappying, co-sleeping, breastfeeding, bubble-reducer Grin

Momagain1 · 21/04/2015 09:24

If your dh is going to waste shampoo, then just buy some bubble bath for the times he gives ds a bubble bath. It surely would be less drying, and the 'chemicals' are much the same.

Or, try making your own: www.littlehouseliving.com/homemade-bubble-bath.html

Hakluyt · 21/04/2015 09:25

Sorry, not new at all. I was one of them 19 years ago!1

madreloco · 21/04/2015 09:45

I can't see how it possibly matters either way. My children are allergic to bubble bath and need oil in the bath water for their skin, it has never once occurred to me to worry about the lack of bubbles.
Bizarre.

Pengweng · 21/04/2015 09:49

Both of mine have very dry skin and i only bath them three times a week anyway. They are allowed bubbles if they ask but they rarely do because then they can't see their toys.

I also second ASDA's little angels range for sensitive skin. That and Child's Farm stuff (boots) are the only things that don't make them itchy. Plus the Child's farm stuff smells soo yummy.

Sootgremlin · 21/04/2015 09:55

Yeah I didn't mean a new thing to do, just as the other things are not new, just a new label for the internet, which likes new labels for old things Smile

Pedestriana · 21/04/2015 10:05

Another vote for Lush bubble bars here.

IssyStark · 21/04/2015 10:07

Pengweng: if your kids have dry skin then don't bath them three times a week!!!

What is it with bathing children daily? We used to have baths once a week when I was growing up and then knees/faces/etc washed as often as needed. Kids, and especially babies, do not need daily baths, weekly is enough. Any more will contribute to drying their skin.

Pedestriana · 21/04/2015 10:08

Actually, they're not the bars - they're the rolls of stuff that look like putty and come in different colours. It's like plasticine for the bath, but it crumbles up and makes bubbles.

SunnyBaudelaire · 21/04/2015 10:08

" I refuse to sit my ds in a bath full of chemicals."

lol do you think water and air are not 'chemicals'?

Jackieharris · 21/04/2015 10:09

It's the nasty stuff that creates the bubbles.

So it's one or the other Im afraid.

Tell dp not to waste the shampoo!
